Thread: What type of Collet are these please?
30/04/2022 17:37:27
Posted by B Tulley on 30/04/2022 16:17:02:

There's about half a dozen, ranging from 3/16" up to 1"; I can check actual sizes of all if that's useful. Which part of the collet refers to the 3/4" or 1.1/4" size?

It is usually the largest diameter of bar that the collet can accommodate.

They look remarkably like Britan collets, Andrew beat me to it !

Thread: Looking for a non-magnetic, strong, easily glued material
29/04/2022 13:43:49

The relevant question is that you claim to have a PhD, Andrew told us about his and stated it can be read in Cambridge University library and asked where yours was, it is not a war of words it is a simple question, please let us all know about it and where we can read it.

29/04/2022 11:36:10

PS: A copy of my Ph.D. is available for reading in the Cambridge University library, where is yours?

Edited By Andrew Johnston on 28/04/2022 21:06:35

Mr McDonald seems to have forgotten to answer Andrews question, just a gentle reminder for him.

Thread: Workshop warming
28/04/2022 16:48:41

Totally agree Jim I am the same, dehumidifier runs all year round and as much heat as is needed during winter, I would rather spend the money on enabling me to enjoy my hobby, if I keep it no doubt the care home will get their grubby fingers on it and having first hand knowledge of how the mother in law was treated in a home they will get as little as possible from me.

Totally agree with Joseph, and if you want help have the decency to tell us all about what you are doing, also how about YOU try doing your own research, stop using the typical manager technique of delegating everything and doing nothing yourself. In short tell the complete story of what you are doing, why you are doing it etc. Nobody minds helping people achieve their goals but I suspect this a business venture and in MY opinion you are taking the p**s

Thread: Supplier of 7/32" Dowel Pins Please?
22/04/2022 20:23:47

Buy a length of 7/32 silver steel, you will be able to make a couple of spare sets out of a length. Don’t bother hardening them, if you wear them out put new ones in.

Wow what an excellent range of threads 2.5 tpi to 96 tpi.

Thread: Sigh, practicing a skill I would rather not need
18/04/2022 11:35:01

Thor cannot understand a word in the link you posted but they look like stellite drills, great for drilling anything hard but have to be run hot, no coolant. Unfortunately stellite is now difficult to get hold of.

Thread: Fitting a 5 micron DRO to Myford ML7

As Jon Lawes says what are you making that demands such accuracy and more to the point how do you keep your workshop at a constant 20 degrees centigrade.

Thread: MEW, ME, RCM&E and Model Boats under new ownership.
06/04/2022 11:31:34

Considering the amount of motorcycling titles Morton’s publish MEW could quite possibly be renamed Bikers Workshop,, that would leave ME and EIM, both of which seem to be struggling, so either merge the two into one decent magazine or leave one magazine for model engineering and have the other for modern technology, CNC, 3D printing etc that way all the luddites will be happy reading about turning handles and backlash and those interested in things operated by a computer wont be pi..img everybody off talking about G code etc. Maybe we will get a decent exhibition out of Morton’s, possibly a merger of EIM and ME, something which I believe should have happened years ago.

Thread: Best way to reduce a piece of 1/8"thk brass sheet to 3/32" thk.
05/04/2022 09:49:50

Solder or shellac for me, double sided tape ok but may move under an intermittent or heavy cut. Don’t know about glues, if they work well you may damage the job when trying to break the glue joint, at least with solder you heat it up to put it on and heat it up to get it off.

Thread: Taper pin reamers that rub...
03/04/2022 15:03:18

Old mart that exact thing used to happen where I worked, we tried politely to explain to management that if someone wanted to handle a component they should ask the operator, the reply was basically, management don’t ask mere operators for anything, didn’t really matter though, we weren’t making anything important, only parts for aircraft engines.

Thread: What adhesive - that shrinks when it sets - do you recommend for melamine laminate sheets?
03/04/2022 14:54:35

Don what is wrong with telling us a bit about what you are doing, if you really don’t want to tell us anything about what you are doing maybe you shouldn’t ask for our help, after all is what you are doing such a secret, anyone would think you are doing work that you intend patenting.

30/03/2022 16:44:18

Why don’t you contact some adhesive manufacturers and ask them the question, after all they make the stuff and are the most qualified people to answer your question, that’s why they all have technical departments.

Certainly avoid any dishwashing liquid, it contains something to make the plates sparkle, the surgical spirit and acetone etc may well have additives, the best thing I have found is cellulose thinners, don’t use gun wash because it’s cheaper because it contains all sorts of things.

Thread: DRO----How accurate
23/03/2022 11:04:26

Blimey I’m still trying to work out what the question is, but DRO——how accurate? I can answer that, good enough for industry to use for the past 40 years so plenty good enough for chasing microns in your garden shed.

Thread: Searching for a good quality, metric-only, 300mm steel ruler
22/03/2022 19:08:57

Is it a Rule or is it a Ruler, I have a rule, don’t tell her indoors what it cost, and the Queen is a ruler, so what is the correct name for this metric calibrated straight edge?

22/03/2022 16:23:53

Why does it have to be double sided metric? Metric one side imperial the other I can understand but why both sides metric, if you want it to read from right to left turn the rule through 180.000 degrees.
