Thread: Case Hardening |

Jason I seem to remember something about tempering to refine the core due to grain growth when quenching the case but cannot remember if that was just for cyanide hardening. Where I done my time we had a big cyanide hardening shop, lovely place to be on a freezing cold winters day, the fumes also cured blocked up noses very effectively! |
Thread: Bantam wormdrive pinion |

Got got to remember this machine is 50 + years old and has most probably worked its nuts off every day in an industrial environment, one of the problems I had with mine, which is the same vintage was the dog on the forward / reverse lever, the corners were worn off of it in the forward direction, convention seems to be down for forward, up for reverse, the easiest cure for me was to alter the wiring so forward is up. Machine only gets used once or twice a year. |

No point in making a shaft with a keyway all the way along it unless it drives something so the bit it drives must have a key somewhere. Long time since I took the apron off mine so I cannot be sure but would the key be cut integral with the pinion bush, pretty sure if it was a separate key it would be shown, one thing about Colchester’s is that their manuals and exploded diagrams were good. Not the end of the world though, it should be easy enough to cut or broach a keyway through if you have to, I would imagine the bits are soft. |

Thread: Any Parcelforce delivery issues during strike? |
20/12/2022 13:32:36 |
OK so it’s not Parcel Farce this time, it’s Royal Snail. Brother in law posted us a Christmas card on 3rd December, from Herne Bay in Kent. It arrived this morning and close inspection of the franking shows that it went from Kent up to Yorkshire to be franked on the 7th December and since then who knows where it has been as it makes its way south to Hampshire. First delivery we have had from Royal Snail in a fortnight. |

Wish I was retired Barry, I agree with you about fusion but the problem with it is in the cam side of it, they have disabled rapid moves and toolchanges which makes it pretty carp for any machining. |

Thread: Face Milling Experiment |

Worked for quite a few years in an aerospace Toolroom, we had a vacancy for a miller and after all the interviews were over the job was given to a bloke from the machine shop. Foreman gave him a job to do on his first day but after about an hour the foreman went over to him and had a word in his ear, “we are the Toolroom, you don’t make coloured swarf in here”. |

Placed an order with Arc Eurotrade yesterday 8th December for some Xmas goodies and got an email at 2:30pm saying delivery tomorrow Friday 9 December, I was due to go out so re arranged everything so I could be in all day also opted for delivery to a safe place, the porch, because then they won’t be able to put a card through the door saying no ones in. Got up this morning and at 9:01 got an email from DPD saying sorry your parcels delayed in transit, we will update you when your parcel moves. Doubt anything will happen now until Monday,. I have no complaint with Arc, their stuff is OK but I think their delivery partner is c**p, this is not the first time they have said next day delivery and pulled the delayed in transit trick on me, sorry Arc but DPD are letting you down. |

Am I to assume then that this is pretty well the end of this thread, there is an exhibition and some of us are going, in the words of the late great LBSC nuff said. |

I use a vertical slide set parallel to the lathe axis. |

No reason at all not to paint at this time of year, in fact I am painting a set of loco frames in the garage at the moment. Temperature this morning was around 10 degrees C. Frames have been sprayed with Upol acid 8 and left a few days to dry and now they are being painted red inside using Precision paints Signal Red. Paint is brushed on because I think it is easier to get into all the little nooks and crannies with a paintbrush rather than an airbrush, cab and tank etc will be airbrushed. The paint is going on beautifully at this temperature, I am using 1/2 and 3/4 sable brushes. |
Thread: New type postage stamps |
06/12/2022 16:39:48 |
Just had a bloke in a bright red jacket come up my drive, at first I thought it was Santa coming early but no, it was a postman, first one we have seen for two weeks, all he delivered was junk mail. I asked him if he knew where I could buy third class stamps, he seemed a bit confused so I explained that I want a third class stamp to go with the third class service they are delivering. |

I would paint them as soon as possible. |
Thread: Kuroda UPB-3S Boring and Facing Head |

Just had a look at the boring and facing head on Arc euro site and it looks quite impressive, I think that If I had £600.00 to spend I would rather buy Arcs offering rather than a Kuroda of unknown provenance. Usual disclaimer applies, just a well satisfied customer. |

Just my 50 cents worth but I think I would walk away from it. If one of the boring bar holders is broken you can bet it has had a crash into something. I have used wohlhaupter heads all my working life and am now the proud owner of a UPA2, they don’t take kindly to accidents and I imagine this UPB 3S will be the same. Can you get spares for this head, does anyone repair them or agents in this country? If it’s going for silly money cheap you might just get lucky. Is he close enough to you so you could see it working? |
Thread: Heminway Kit |
01/12/2022 08:43:59 |
I bought the castings a few years ago and I am very pleased with them, so far I have taken a light skim off both sides of the large casting and the ally cuts beautifully. Health issues prevented me doing any more but hopefully I will be back in the workshop soon. My only complaint is the crappy bit of M6 studding that was supplied in the kit, I shall screwcut my own.I need the large steady for machining a loco smokebox so must make it a priority as it’s holding thing up. I am surprised Myford didn’t make a larger version of their fixed steady, but looking at Colchester’s their steadies are fairly small capacity for the size of machine, they must have had their reasons. |
Thread: Any Parcelforce delivery issues during strike? |

Parcel force delivered a packet from Arc Euro last week at 8.15 in the morning, didn’t knock or ring the bell, wife and I were in kitchen having breakfast and didn’t hear a thing, first we knew was seeing card on mat saying they had tried to deliver. As we have been the victims of many burglary’s over the years the house and workshop are covered in cameras so I went and had a look, up the drive, card through letterbox, turn round and down the drive, no attempt at delivery. I had to go to local post office the following day to collect the packet. Arc Euro service excellent, parcelforce absolute c**p. |
