Thread: 4646 digital version not available
29/08/2020 16:18:21

I am unable to view the latest issue of ME. The error message says "requested URL/de/7/3075 not found".

All the other digital versions work .

How can I get access to the latest issue?

Thanks,

Dave.

Thread: resumption of delivery of ME to Canada
17/07/2020 16:26:31

A very unsatisfactory answer..

I expect to get the hard copies I paid for. All the other UK magazines I subscribe to have managed to continue delivery what is the problem for the ME publications?

Will you give a credit for the ME issues not supplied in hard copy? If not why not?

If I want I can use my 54"TV to read the digital version but it is not an acceptable option for me.

Your smart arse answer is no encouragement to continue using this forum or indeed buying the magazine.

Today I received a copy of ME the first since deliveries were suspended when Copvid19 began.

Will all the undelivered copies be sent?

I find the digital version very unsatisfactory . Even on a 15" screen "lap top" the image is too small for my failing eyesight.

The latest ME is not available on line.

Thread: rotary broaching
28/01/2020 16:45:52

One attempt I made was to mount the broach on the top slide . I set the top slide over at 1.5 degrees and feed into the female blank. I thought it might give some clearance but it was not obvious that it did.

Filing clearance in a .06"A/F hex hole is not easy.

The attraction of the rotary broach was to produce small hexagons for which bar stock is no longer available and avoid setting up the mill with dividing head.

27/01/2020 22:41:06

I made up the Hemmingway rotary broach kit and it works well using a male broach. Reading the proprietary manufacturers literature they claim that a female broach can be made using the male .

I tried this and the result did work but of course it lacks clearance and is a tough go in use.

Any ideas how to give clearance in a female broach with out using a file?

Thread: making Taps and dies
11/12/2019 03:17:58

I have made several taps and dies using silver steel,(drill rod for USA), with success. Heat treated to mid straw tempering colour. They cut brass well but steel a little less so. Sizes from 16 BA up to .125" two start lh hand square thread. Go for it

The latest digital model engineer, beginning 21st June, seems not to have been posted.

Why is this?

Thread: Aluminium cylinder blocks
23/06/2019 16:28:37

It is most unlikely that the bore was ground post anodizing more likely it was honed to achieve the surface finish required.

Lapping is an option for the model engineer 's work shop.

21/06/2019 22:48:21

I don't think so.

My experience of using it is that it is so thin as to make grinding nearly impossible without removing it completely.

If using 'O' ring seals, which would be a good idea, there is no need to grind the bore for either hard chrome or anodizing as the fits are not that close.

Very light lapping of either finish, with a very fine abrasive, is the most that may be required.

21/06/2019 02:56:28

I don't think hard anodizing needs to be ground. The layer is very thin but very hard. I suspect it is so thin as to make grinding impractical.

My experience is that it is not so expensive if you can find a firm to do it.

Hi John,

No, I have lived abroad for many years and lost touch with those who might know. The locos certainly worked well initially and gave no signs of cylinder problems.

Aluminium comes in so many grades and conditions that it is not possible to guess what it's composition might be from machinability or visual examination.

As far as differential expansion between the aluminum cylinder and steel or cast iron or bronze piston the main problem would probably be leakage because the aluminum bore would expand more than a steel piston head.

Referring again to I/C practice, aluminum pistons in aluminum bores with cast iron piston rings work very well and there is no reason the same material combinations should not work in a low pressure, well lubricated steam cylinder. Anodizing provides an extremely hard surface which should be wear resistant.

My late friend , Bob Darby, made several Simpexes using aluminum cylinder blocks cast from old I/C pistons. He used standard I/C piston rings running in the aluminum bore. It work fine. He reasoned the conditions in a wet steam cylinder bore were not as severe as an I/C engine, If you want to be really fussy anodize the bore.

Thread: source of gauge glass
31/12/2018 16:35:22

Thanks for the replies.

To clarify it is glass tube I need for the boiler water level gauge.

I am aware of the problems of small bore gauge glass giving over optimistic readings of water level but still think it will work satisfactorily. Should the loco ever be completed it will be an entertainment for myself not a general use heavy hauler for club running.

At one time this diameter, (1/8" was available from the usual suppliers but I suspect the safety nazis have once again protected me from myself.

I am trying to source 1/8" gauge glass. I have looked at the usual suppliers with no success. 5/32" seems to be the smallest dia now available but is a bit clunky for 3.5" gauge models.

Thread: Myford super 7
16/05/2018 03:16:42

Hi Micheal,

I have a '63 vintage Super 7 with cone clutch and I lubricate it with a shot of machine oil now and again. If you have drag probably the clearance when dis- engaged needs to be increased a little.

I have had the machine from new with no clutch troubles, in fact no troubles at all. A fine machine.

Thread: ME production problems, delivery problems or Canada post?
04/05/2018 03:06:45

Yesterday I received ME 4576 by brown bag, today 4580 arrived, again in a brown bag. Both were sent on 12th March, so over six weeks to get here .

Canada Post has a large depot in Richmond, (Vancouver) Amazon has a large warehouse next door to it. Canada Post's plan is to become carrier of choice to the large internet retailers. Hence the exemplary service. Tracked parcels from other, smaller, retailers usually take five to seven working days with no weekend service.

Thanks to MTM for sending the replacement MEs.

02/05/2018 03:31:35

As an indication of Canada Posts priorities on Saturday I ordered a set of ER 25 collets from Amazon. They arrived today.

Obviously Amazon is treated as a priority customer and so our magazines are left in limbo until some one can get around to dealing with them.

Still waiting for April EIM and Australian ME.

27/04/2018 19:47:09

Received today by individual "brown bag" issues 4577 and 4579. Sent International Priority mail. 12th March 2018 mailing date, 19th March customs declaration date.

The copies which were dispatched originally have already arrived , (recently) so these are spare. Any one still in need is welcome to them.

21/04/2018 03:07:20

Today I received ME issues 4577 and 4584 . So, for me, ends the saga of long delayed delivery. It would seem the the delivery constipation problem is over for now. The Canadian mail goes through Montreal which is not good.

So relief all round I hope.

One point is that 4577 seems to have been to Hungary and the Czech Republic in search of the most cost effective way to Canada, Could this have contributed to the four months it took to get to me?

If MTM provide me with the date of hand over and any code numbers their mail contractors have for this issue I will check with Canada :Post as to when they claim to have received the consignment.
