Thread: Small rotary tables
24/01/2011 11:07:41
I have one of the cheaper small rotary tables and have found it less than satisfactory. Mine is a 3" (75mm) one but there are similar 4" (100mm) versions around. They have a knurled brass screw on the side that locks the table. Before buying I suggest you tighten this screw (finger tight is sufficient) and watch the far side of the table very carefully. I think you will see it move. I dismantled mine and found that the table is supported by a single ball race at the bottom of the base which I do not consider a satisfactory design.
At Ally Pally I bought a 100mm Verttex table whic seems much more solid but have yet to try it out.

EKP have 3/8 BSW studding in 12" lengths on their website. They also do metric and BA studding.
Thread: Balance Springs II

Could it be you do not have enough tension on the wire while you are winding the spring. To get a permanent bend it is neccessary to exceed the elastic limit.
I have wound a number of small coil springs using guitar strings without serious problems. The fact that the spring ends up nearly twice the size of the mandrel also seems to suggest this possibility.

Thread: Hobbymat

I have a Hobbymat mill with an MT1 taper.
I got an ER20 collet set and MT1 collet chuck from Gloster Tooling via eBay. You will need to make a drawer bar but that is not difficult.
ER20 collets go up to 13mm but I prefer to use cutters of 10mm or smaller diameter - I do not think the mill is rigid enough for anything bigger.

Thread: help with seeing

I had a pair of bi-focals made specially for the workshop and fitted in frames with side guards. They have a non standard division with the bottom (close up) lens occupying about 2/3 and the upper (distance) lens about 1/3. This means I don't have to peer over the top of the frame to walk into the house but still have the bulk of the lens to see through while working. I am still getting used to them and they are not perfect but I can use a cheap headband magnifier ok.

I have used them in the past and found them good.

Thread: The HobbyMat BFE65
28/06/2010 09:32:47
I have a BFE65 mill and have not had a problem. Mine has an MT1 taper - I have been told some have MT2.

Make sure the bore and the taper are clean then whack the drill chuck up into the spindle. I do not use a hammer or any other tool. To remove I put a rod down the drawbar hole and use a sharp blow with a hammer - it sometimes takes quite a whack to free the chuck.

I only use up to 10mm drills. The most likely problem is when the drill emerges from the bottom of the hole, especially with brass. I nearly always support the workpiece on a scrap of MDF which helps in this respect.
