Thread: Living with the digital copies

Hi folks - sorry I tried an earlier magazine to test with handwrittten amendments in the original frame which was all black and white

P703 is clear apart from the coloured drawing - the problem there is that it's a CAD multicolour multi layer drawing and the graphics conversion looks as though the image has been scanned then inserted as a picture frame into the publishing program instead of converting the CAD file to a graphic image - I can still read the dimensions (just) on the image but it isn't as clear as it should be.

The difficulty will be that when Dave sees the proofs it will depend what monitor he's using and what resolution the graphics card can manage I would imagine he's not got a full size graphics workstation at home though I stand to be corrected

Hi lester - looks absolutely fine on my MAcbook Pro and on the iMac

Thought so!

As I'm on can I say to David Clark I have read the various criticisms (unfairly in my view) levelled at the editorial team in the past and would just like to say I and I am sure the majority of readers have appreciated your efforts in both MEW and ME in the past and continue to do so

The magazines in hard copy are eagerly awaited and given me much pleasure at times when life's not been very nice!

Linux Rules!! just haven't got time because of work (I'm self employed) to justify time spent on coding drivers which was really just for fun - once you have a Linux setup working it's great

Unfortunately MAc OSX does actually work out of the box with no need to find drivers or go onto the C:> prompt

Just checked to make sure I was right and yes pin sharp printing of both handwritten sketches and 6 point italic in references on HP laser using the "print this page" button and 100% page enlargement setting ie no zoom

It is the translation into windows code that must be the problem - linux is of course Unix based as is Mac OS x

Hi John

No pdf's print fin eon the MAc (I use both Samsung colour laser and HP mono laser) and resolution is fine down to 4 point with no raster effect visible Windows!!!!!
08/06/2011 19:48:33
I hate to say this, but there's no problem at all if you use a Mac - it is almost certainly due to the publication using Qark Xpress for publishing - Can't say if the problem applies to Linux as I stopped using that 18 months ago when switching to Mac but there was never any problem with Ubuntu and reading the pdf's in firefox - there is a few seconds delay as the image comes up initially in low res but on Firefox and Safari browsers the image sharpens up after a few seconds to allow 4 point type being read even on a laptop

Says it all about Windows!!!!

Thread: Northumbrian CYLINDER DRAWINGS
10/09/2010 17:06:56
I've only just started the piston/cylinder assemblies. There seems to me to be a mistake in the drawings for the steam passages in that the two 3/32 steam passages from the steam chest  are shown on the side projection as going out on the face where the cylinder covers fit - if that were the case the team wouldn't be admitted into the cylinder bore itself unless the cover had a bypass passage fitted.

THe end projection seems to suggest a filed passage is made into the cylinder bore but this isn't shown on the drawing -

I'm going to use the technique I used on the Stuart Vertical 10 (also being shown in ME at present) of milling a small relief at the end of the cylinder which will cut into the 3/32 passages

Thread: Northumbrian Suggestion of need for more photos of boiler underside
04/07/2010 09:08:09
Hi everyone apologies for delay but I still have to work to pay for the parts!

Camera bust so had to use my phone I found that although the article says 1/4" square all round for foundation ring, probably due to me when I assembled the boiler it was more like 3/16 on the sides and 1/4 front and back. I made the side pieces 1/4" deep by 3/16 hence they look different sizes on the photos of the bottom, so there was minimal gap into which the solder had to run.

I'm a beginner as I believe Chris is - one thing I found when silver soldering this even with a large Sievert burner is that you have to insulate the boiler away from where you're trying to silver solder or it takes ages to reach working temperature - I used broken firebrick round the barrel and stood the boiler on firebrick and it seemed easier.

There isn't much to the base - I attach  some photos. Though not specifically mentioned I completed as much as I could of the firebox and soldered it up. I found fitting the top stays to the inside of the main  boiler tube accurately to be helped by putting in 4 x 1/16" rivets which helped to keep it all aligned whilst fitting the foundation ring. Also made sure the bottom of the firebox and the outer tube were flat  on surface pate when all assembled dry (linisher took out any minor unevenness)

Loads of flux on the parts after pickling in Citric Acid, then soldered it in with the backplate all at next firing. I'm then going to insert and solder the stays and throat tube and bushes at the next session note I'm building the superheated version hence the two larger holes at the throatplate).

Haven't included a specific photo of the  tube but     drilled a 1" hole in a block of hardwood, heated the 1" tube to anneal (be careful - too much heat and it'll melt - thanks to GLR for the free replacement) and flanged with a peen hammer.

All in all took a bit of time to get everything lined up but not nearly as bad as I had feared.

NOW THE BAD NEWS UNFORTUNATELY I MOVED TO AN IMAC AFTER SOME YEARS ON LINUX

THIS APPEARS TO BE INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE SOFTWARE BEING USED ON THIS THREAD AS FAR AS IMPORTING IMAGES - IT WONT ACCEPT CUT & PASTE OR DRAG & DROP IMAGES; OS X DOESN'T HAVE an "album" i have tried pasting the url and it just doesn't show in the post and I tried creating an "album" folder and pointing it to that and it doesn't do that either!!

anyone who needs to see the pics (Chris??) email me directly on [email protected] and I'll forward an email with the pics attached

I spoke to GLR this afternoon and they assured me the valve was made to the correct specs except for the thread ie flow capacity and pressure settings

SAFETY VALVE

the safety valve opening pressure  is OK I spoke to GLR this pm they apparently got a batch threaded  5/16 ME from their supplier when they'd asked for 3/8ME but the pressure is the same so it just means threading the bush to 5/16 ME instead of 3/8

Also the only dome casting they have is for Rainhill - don't know if it's dimensions will suit Northumbrian yet

Hate to say this but it's my first attempt as well!No time yet (work keeps getting in the way)

BTW the safety valve is OK I spoke to GLR this pm they apparently got a batch of 5/16 from their supplier but the pressure is the same so it just means threading the bush to 5/16 ME instead of 3/8

I'm hoping to make a start on the foundation ring either this weekend or in ten days' time - I'll try to photo and post them

I bought boiler kit of parts from GLR and although the articles' drawings refer to 1/4" sq copper they supplied 1/4 x 3/8 copper -    I'm going to file/mill down to 1/4 square as the 3/8 would go above the backplate bushes.

ALSO if you're going to do the superheaters the GLR kit doesn't give the two 8" long x 3/8" tubes  -  fortunately I bought some last week so it's not a problem but the superheate
r tubes aren't shown on the ME drawings. I've realised you can't depend on the ME article drawings to build the engine you need a full set of plans from GLR .

As mine haven't arrived yet (only ordered them a couple of days ago) I don't know whether the original plans have the same errors as the articles

I've found that the safety valve bush drawing also appears to be wrong - I bought one from GLR (no complaints about them they have been v helpful) and only when I machined the Bush B on the drawings in volume 204 #4376 I found that the safety valve is in fact 5/16" ME thread NOT 3/8 as shown on the plan!!!

I'm going to have to buy the full plan after all

Thread: Northumbrian AXLE BOX SPRINGS

REEVES PIANO WIRE IS CHEAPER THAN I THOUGHT!! it's more like £3 - no connection with them other than as a satisfied customer

Thanks to Chris - yes REEVES 2000 keep stainless spring steel wire for this ([email protected] - from memory about £7.50 per 7 metres)

I have found the dimensions for the trailing axle springs but can't seem to find the driving axle box spring dimensions - am I missing something or can anyone tell me what wire gauge to use and what the  spring dimensions (turns and overall height) should be?

Thanks
