I have posted a picture of the old Stuat No1 in case it helps. I hope so.

Certainly. It's in bits at the moment, but I did photograph it before I dismantled it, as a record of how it looked. May take a day or so, as I have a few things going on at the moment. Thanks for your interest.

I am currently rebuilding an old Stuart No1 engine. It has all Whitworth threads which Stuarts ceased to use in 1945. It bears a very robust nameplate saying "T H CLARK MAKER". Has anyone any idea who Mr. Clark was, and when he built the engine? It shows signs of more than one pair of hands having worked on it. Edited By Maurice Cox on 25/11/2009 17:24:30 |

There is an "iron on" etching paper available from "Maplins" and others, with which you can make etching masks. It does require a lazer printer or photocopier. When it comes to the etching, if you intend to use ferric chloride, I was told by firm that does it on a comercial scale that if the etching process seems a bit slow, don't increase the strength, water it down! Apparently, oxygen is a catalyst to the reaction, so oxygenated water will help. They also recommended suspending the work face down in the etching bath (with the face clear of the bottom) to allow the debris to fall away. Keep the bath rocking gently during the etch. |
Thread: Stuart Beam Engine |

Has anyone ever seen a tank-bed beam engine with a single centre column? I have just completed a much modified (and, I hope, improved) version of this engine, and wonder if there was ever one similar. All of the dozens I have pictures of, have six or eight slender columns, or A frames. |
