Thread: Joining flat toothed belting |

Might be worth experimenting with the old belt first. Superglue plus diagonal slice as mentioned above might work at least for a while. Doug |

Just to show you what is possible with an unaltered 2.5 TR size 16 insert. The tool will pass through a 15.02mm bore and this one cancut 36mm length of thread. Edited By old mart on 30/07/2022 17:28:24
That is an interesting insert holder with a single angled slice removed to provide the insert socket. Much easier to make than the usual type.

Thread: Lifting milling vice off mill table |

Is there a convenient place on your vice that you could install a soft faced jacking screw to break the base to table seal. Mike I did think of that but there is no convenient place to provide a screw. Mind you I could clamp a bar of steel in the vice jaws with part of the bar overhanging the vice and put a screw in the overhanging part. Doug |

Drill some small intersecting holes so you can apply compressed air to the centre of the adhering areas? A good idea but I don't have a supply of compressed air.

Hi Douglas, I usually mill dry so not much of a problem for me. May be a Mill Vice Grip would help you? Thor This is also a neat idea Thor, and would work well with a dry table and vice but not too sure that it would improve matters with the oil problem. Doug |

If I understand the question properly put a length of bar in the vice sticking out to the side, and a piece of wood on the table and use a piece of wood as a lever to crack the seal. If its that much of an issue shim stock under key mount positions will decrease the "suction" area allowing the air in . Alan That sounds like a good idea Alan, I must give it a try. The tenon under the vice prevents any levering in the T slot of the table so your solution is probably the best way forward. Doug

I am getting fed up struggling to lift off my vice from the mill table and wondered if others have the same problem and if anyone has a solution. The problem arises after I have been using neat cutting oil and there is a film of oil under the vice which binds the vice to the table. The vice base has quite a large surface area and is fitted with an alignment tenon which means it can only slide sideways when trying to lift it. Is there any way of breaking the oil "glue" before lifting? Doug |

Even with the cloth I would not hold the sheet metal with my hands as shown in the video. You only get one pair of hands and it's better not to rip them to shreds on a drilling machine. Doug |
Thread: Myford induction hardened beds |
21/04/2022 10:14:03 |
When I bought my Speed 10 brand new from the original Myford many a long year ago I asked for the bed to be induction hardened. I was then told that this was not an option for the Speed 10 so I wonder if it was ever an option on the ML10 or Speed 10. |

Thread: Screw cutting problem |

When it comes to screwcutting I think the set over technique is beneficial when using a small lathe. I have a Myford Speed 10 lathe and almost always use the top slide set over and the lathe seems happier this way. Chunkier lathes probably don't benefit to the same extent. Doug |
Thread: Recomendations for a Keyless Chuck? |
16/01/2022 16:37:29 |
I have collected a few keyless ones over the years. Most are of the cheap type and all have worked well, but I did splash out and buy an Albrecht one with integral R8 arbor about ten years ago . The Albrecht one was on special offer at the time and cost about £100 but I have never regretted the purchase since it is so nice to use. There is something about quality tools that keep on giving joy long after you have forgotten the price. Doug |

My 6 by 4 bandsaw was quite put out when I read Clive's post to it and it has been sulking ever since. I have had the poor thing for many a long year and I know it has a number of faults but it has done a lot of work for me and seems pretty bombproof. With a decent blade it is a good compromise for a small workshop. Doug |
Thread: Anyone updated to Windows11 yet ? |

I was just on the point of getting a new laptop but will probably wait until I can get one with W11 installed. It should not be long before most are being shipped with W11. Doug |

I have experienced the same problem with my Myford Speed 10 and, like you, have just put up with it. I must get round to doing something similar for my peace of mind. I must say your handiwork looks very impressive, I am not sure mine will look quite so neat ! Doug |

I bet you don't Doug, they only sell the thrust kit for the ML7. regards Martin Ah, the one I got was for a Speed 10 which has the same fitting as the ML7, I did not realise the Super 7 was different. Doug |

Arc Euro have a kit for this ( I bought mine ages ago so I hope they still have them ). Doug |
Thread: Bureaucracy with a tinge of Madness |

I tried to get my personal tax account access a year ago when I got the same letter about a refund. I also got blocked at the proof of identity stage and gave up in disgust, waited a number of weeks, then received a cheque in the post. A little later in the year I got another letter from them saying I had underpaid tax and they were going to reclaim it by adjusting the next tax code. I do wish they could do their sums properly and stop annoying us. Doug |
Thread: New here, just bought myself a Myford ML10 :)! |
18/06/2021 18:08:53 |
Another very happy owner here (in my case a Speed 10 variant ). They are well made lathes and 20 odd years down the line my one is still as good as new. They are not perfect, but no lathe ever is, and this robust small machine will do a lot of things if one is realistic about size of work. Doug |
Thread: DC power supply question |
15/06/2021 16:37:00 |
The transformer can be glued in place to avoid using the central hole but probably not a good idea to put the capacitor in there. I was forgetting that the outer case of the capacitor is aluminium and would probably get eddy currents in it. It was just a thought to save space but not one of my better thoughts. Doug Just noticed the above response about there being no magnetic field in the middle - you live and learn.
