Thread: Can a small lathe handle a tail stock die holder?
02/08/2020 15:51:09

I only use the lathe (ML7) to get the thread started and square then finish in vice using 2 handed die holder ,cut upto 16mm thread using this method. No problems at all.I think sometimes people over complicate things.

When working on this type of power supply would it be safer to power it with an isolating transformer, like we used to do with AC/DC radios and tv’s ?

Thread: size of flex required
23/07/2020 09:13:03

I would fit a mains rated latching emergency stop button between the mains plug and the VFD ,using same size cable/flex that is between the plug and VFD.

I can’t understand why these threads get so complicated ,when all it needs is a simple answer. No doubt there will something wrong with my answer.

Please explain why a small machine say 1HP or less shouldn’t use a plug .

What is wrong with 4 low power items plugged in 4 way socket ?

1HP (or less is fine) on a 13A plug, but the starting current (typically 4x running current) will be getting near to the plug rating, albeit for a short time, so plugged into a socket with nothing else will be fine, but it is often shared with other appliances and equipment and this is not so good.

Depends what you mean by 'low power' . . .the issue is that it is far too easy to overload the adapter and socket, plug using too many items at the same time, maybe not so much in a work shop enviroment, but we have all seen a TV, Video recorder, Lamp, and even a electric heater all plugged into one 13A socket - its a recipe for disaster !

Thanks for replying to my post.

Thread: ML7 refurbishment

Hi Fastdave ,regarding back plate thread ,try putting the back plate on the wrong round to see if it goes all the way on. This should show whether the threads are the problem or the plain bit of bore.

Hope this helps.

I remember buying a new back plate for a 4 jaw chuck to fit my ML7  ,this would not go on all the way.Faceplate, catch plate and 3 jaw chuck all spun on easily by hand.

I bought a tap ,tapped the new back plate and it fitted alright then.

Thread: Mono or Multi tube water heater
19/06/2020 18:41:47

Why not use an old central heating boiler, the pump would circulate the tub water through the tub.Thermostat and controls built in.Need to change to propane. Most of the work is done .This is just an idea ,would probably work. The heat output is also known ,making any calculations easier.
