Thread: Tempering Salts |

Hi Springbok, yes that is the sort of thing I'm looking for. In the commercial heat treating world they use a bath of molten salts held at a tempering temperature into which the item to be tempered is immersed. It is a much more controllable method than the oxide colour method used by amateurs such as our selves. |

Does anybody know where I can get a small quantity , say 2 or 3 kilos of tempering salts. Googling does not seem to throw up a likely supplier. |

Is there any chance of a little permently applied warmth. I understand a 40 watt light bulb will supply enough warmth to a sizeable machine tool to keep condensation at bay. I believe small low wattage heaters are available. This is second hand knowledge picked up from another forum, I pass it on for what it is worth. |

No, cos you are only heating to about 500 C to harden you have to go to above 750C. Long explanation could follow but I suggest you read it up when the time is appropriate.. |

Sorry to be pedantic about this but the elastic stretch of steel bolts regardless of their tensile will be the same. Non elastic stretch or permanent deformation will just occur soo ner in a lower tensile bolt. Also every time I use my ancient Bridgeport I curse the chap who, in the past, just used ordinary sized hex bolt heads in the tee slots and made a real dogs breakfast of the said slots. |
