Mike try Rotogrip I am pretty sure they do spare sets of jaws, the numbers are from the original production, spare jaws will have a different number but that so you don't mix jaws from different sets. When new the body and jaw numbers are usually the same but spare jaws will differ. John |
Thread: Hallite washers |
11/07/2020 19:45:47 |
Hallite seems to have disappeared, I needed [wanted] some a short while back but ended up using an alternative from Ebay -- enter Hallite Gasket Material and search you should find something suitable to make your washers from - easy enough to make a couple of one use punches from the scrap box. My recollection of Hallite is it was a paper based material with graphite impregnated and some form of reinforcement but I don't remember it as wire ? Stand to be corrected of course. John |

Hi Bren, An interesting machine, looks to be an instrument makers lathe maybe but some dimensions may help, centre height, distance between centres etc. Never heard of them myself but hopefully there will be some answers. Is there anything that shows its country of origin / John |

Brian, use the keyword search at the top, just put ultrasonic in and there are heaps of posts, the second one down is pertinent to your question. I’m sure you are already aware there are many specialist cleaning additives available from one of “ours advertisers Machine DRO (no connection other than a happy customer) John |

Don't forget to truncate the thread slightly to ensure the crest does not foul in the root of the ram thread, I would suggest around 0.008" on the dia i.e. calculate as above and add the truncation to the bore size calculated. No need to do this if you were using a modern full form tip but if not full form I would defiantly truncate the crest. John |
Thread: EN42J heat treatment |
25/06/2020 10:01:50 |
Robin, I have no experience of EN42 but use EN45 & 47 regularly for springs and the carbon content in EN42 is sufficient for “normal” hardening, I would suggest heat to 850 C and quench in oil then temper to desired hardness, for knives I would suggest 280 C but you may have to experiment. This would be far too hard for a spring ! You need to temper to 340/350 C for Springs Look at **LINK** for some info There a couple of knife makers close to me, one uses files to produce unique products the other uses tool steel, aka gauge plate. Lots of info on the web if you dig around John Edit spelling & typo errors Edited By JohnF on 25/06/2020 10:03:55 |

I have a Wixey not too bad and they do seem to have a better resolution than some others however one source of annoyance is even when switched off they still have a drain on the battery thus I often find the battery is flay when i need it. I now remove the battery after use. At a tool show I saw another brand that was rechargeable via a usb cable, looked an even nicer tool than Wixey so purchased one but found the resolution was not so good -- company concerned very good and offered a replacement or refund. Check the resolution before purchase and make sure it within your expectations. John |

Windy does it have to be EN25T ? if not consider seamless hydraulic tubing easily available in various bore and wall thickness sizes. I have use this material to extend honing tools up to 35" long. John Edited By JohnF on 13/06/2020 12:32:30 Just had a look at what I used and it was 5/8" OD 5/16" bore so you would need to look whats available and if it suits you.

Plenty of these around in the 1950's, my Dad used them in his greenhouses and they were also used in still air incubators and I remember seeing this use in the late 60's. I believe they were just a general purpose item available in most general stores or ironmongers. John |
