Thread: John Stevens’ skeleton clock
08/07/2011 09:31:47
Hi Sam
On the subject of having to repolish the clock components at some point in the future, my own findings reflect those of the British Museum.
Just over twenty years ago I completed a skeleton clock (my own design) and it was given a final clean and polish and placed under a glass dome sitting on a hardwood base. After all this time the finish on the brass is almost as good as the day it was finished. Not absolutely perfect but still more than good enough for display purposes, I must admit that after my initial enthusiasm I soon got fed up with winding the clock every few days, so the glass dome is rarely removed so the air inside the dome remains the same.
With this rate of tarnishing of the brass I don't think it is something to worry too much about.

Thread: MV Cranborne

Hi Jeremy
Sorry I cant tell you anything about the prototype vessel, but I do remember the series "Modeling the Cranbourne" described in the Model Engineer around 1962/3.
However I am sure far more knowlegeable folks on this site will give you more detail than I can.

Thread: Fixing side-tanks and cab to running boards
22/04/2011 17:20:31
Hi Tony
Don't know if this is an accepted method by the ME fraternity, but on my Rob Roy and Spencer (both 3.5") I soft soldered some offcuts of 1/4" brass into the bottom of the tanks during construction and then secured the tanks to the running boards with 3mm screws from underneath the running board into blind tapped holes in the brass offcuts.
So far - (about 15 years for Rob Roy) there have been no problems, nor any leaks and it does allow the tanks to be removed quite easily.

Thread: Anybody else had this problem?

My thanks to all involved with this, it now seems like the problem has been sorted. Logged on  and everything is working as it should.

Hi All,
I am a subscriber to MEW and have registered my subscriber number on this site. Curiously whenever I click on "Back Issues" I get the standard subscriber only message, the only way I can view these is to go to "My Details" where the subscriber number is already displayed, click onto "Save" and I can then view the back issues.
Surely I should not have to do this every time I log on, or am I doing something stupid?

Thread: Engine building without power tools
07/09/2009 13:09:47
Hi Mark,
Can't remember exactly when - 70's, 80's maybe there was a series in ME called "Handmaiden" by Tubal Cain I believe. This was a construction series on building a stationary engine using only hand tools.
I'm sure some of the more expert members here may be able to elaborate on this. I thought it may be of interest as there won't be the financial outlay on potentially expensive kits, only the purchase of stock size materials which will always be useful regardless.

Thread: Digital editions of Model Engineer and Model Engineers' Workshop.

Runs a little slow on my home broadband (my normal speed is around 3.2) but on my super fast broadband at work it ia absolutely brilliant.
As Paul says, how will I get any work done?

Thread: Super 7 patterns when turning
25/06/2009 10:15:10
Some years back I had a very similar problem, but only really visible when facing on brass - it was there with other types of cut and materials but not so prevalent.
Anyhow, lots of experimenting with tool angles, heights, speeds, asking advice even from Myfords, I eventually cured it by replacing both the drive belts.
My clue was the fact that the lathe had been standing unused for around 2 - 3 years and the belts had developed a "set" where they had been in contact with the pulleys and it was this that was creating some kind of resonance which in turn produced the patterning.
Hope this is of some help.
