Thread: Pipe Bending

You could fill the tube with cerrobend then it should bend BUT personally I`d go for a an elbow connection. It just in`t worth the extra B*****ation factor to try anything else.

Hi Ramon

Ian Bradley (Duplex) designed one in ME Vol 140 issue 3488 part 1 starts on page 437 & then issue 3489 Part 2 page 502. I can let you have copies if you want.
Those crankcases look very similar to the old ED 246 or would they be the 5cc Miles.

HOI Circlip,
what`s  the matter with the real golden oldies? You know US PREWAR ONES !! I reckon I`m not the only one on this forum. So show some respect for us. After all we invented the original mobile phone you know the one with 2 tin cans & a long bit of string. Then there were the handgrenades, tin can with some carbide in it then p** on it jam the lid on & throw (or run like hell before it explodes)
After all we were junior members of Dad`s army waiting to fight the jermuns. Must have heard about our grenades they never came.
Our woodwork teacher was deadly with a chisel as well but it was always the blunt end he`d hit you with never the sharp end. Just as well they were real sharp. Metalwork bloke used to let us melt lead, ali & iron & make things called castings. That metal was red hot. Can`t remember anyone getting burnt though.
Happy days. I pity the kids these days they dont seem to be able to "invent" like what we did. Still  suppose that`s progress.
Crawl back into shell & go to sleep now. Rant over. Nighty night.
Thread: Why do I do it?!

Well, well,

I think we`ve all been there hence the cumminandy box)es!) under our benches. Strange you should mention the Nimrod, David. There was a very quiet tale circulated the MoD a few years ago that the newly manufactured wings wouldn`t fit the old fuselages. Hee Hee good old BWOS.  Sees the originals were "hand made" by DeH.but the new were jig made.

Niloch,
when Chris says "SPIN" the chuck he means by hand & NOT with power switched on! Otherwise you`ll better get a tin hat & suit of armour. So when you are centering in this manner make sure to motor is OFF.

Moderator. Geometer & Artificer articles were great stuff when I ws a young lad & taught me making things. So how about that other great series "Lathe Lore" written by L.C.Mason in Model Maker. I`m sure a lot of Newbies & Old codgers (bodgers!) like me would appreciate them.

i`ve just gone on Eccentric engineering`s site & see that they now have a UK agent. -
Has anyone bought from this agent ??
Thought I`d ask as I`m a little bit wary of PO box numbers having been burnt once before.
Thread: Free offers with subsciptions
27/10/2009 23:34:31
Funny Tom,
My daughter renewed my subscription before the closing date for the caliper & here we are nearly into November & I still ain`t seen it. She decided years ago that a subscription would save her going out to buy me book tokens instead but neither she or I have ever received any of the free goodies. In fact the second last renewal or it may have been earlier she bought the book which was on offer !
Fortunately her Dad likes the magazine or I`d have told her not to bother renewing.

Thread: Old Model Engnieer Magazines on CD/DVD???
27/10/2009 15:53:29
David,
As regards on a CD, i don`t think so as my own experience tells me that the first 14 issues of MEW including the "re-arranged" fold out plans means that there are about 88 pages per issue & all of them take up 2.4Gb on a 4.7Gb DVD.
By re-arranged I mean that each "fold" of the plan was cut & pasted onto & A4 sheet except on 2 occassions where I had to put  the parts onto an A3 sheet otherise the plan would look peculiar.
Each issue took about 4 hours each to scan, cleanup & store so it is not a short job but as someone has said many hands etc.
I assisted colin Usher on his index for Aeromodeller & 4 or 5 years didnt take that long to do.

Thread: Mark all read
27/10/2009 15:40:03
Hi modeng2000,
In a way I agree with you but I often refer back so I`m not all the fussed about a "mark all" BUT what I would like to see is all the latest posts appearing first on each topic with the preceding ones being pushed on to the later pages. 2 off the forums I use are like this & it makes them so much easier to read in that you don`t have to see which page you have to go to to get the latest (lots of tutu`s there!)

Thread: Old Model Engnieer Magazines on CD/DVD???
26/10/2009 23:56:30
Hi wessexman,
As one hoarder to another I couldnt agree more. Having lugged boxes & boxes of all sorts of magazines from Aeromodeller, Model Aircraft, Radio Models, RCME, model railway constructor, railway modeller, model boats, model maker & many more titles in all our house moves (due to work ) my dear wife suggested that its time I had a clearout.
After a prolonged recovery
I found myself agreeing with her.
So I started to scan MEW. Then I thought hang on, why not scan only the articles that I want to keep from ME to begin with, that way I could sell the magazines & start to clear some shelf space as ME takes up more room than MEW. So I did & I`m now about to sell about 8 feet of ME`s.
The hard drive backup & DVD duplicates take up a miniscule amount of space compared to the hard copy mags. Now all I need do is print off the pages I want & it doesn`t matter a hoot if they get covered with coolant or not as is easy to print another copy.
By the way my wife didn`t really lug them around the country it was a lorry that did the move !

Thread: Power hacksaw
06/10/2009 23:56:36
Graham,
I use 12" eclipse blades in my version of the Cochrane saw & yes it will cut 2" bar. Largest I`ve cut was 3" dia. OK it wasn`t quick but it beats the hell out of cutting by hand! I`ve got a bit of 10" x 4" U channel which I need cutting in half (across the U ) & I`m currently pondering how to do it. Current thinking is grip 4" leg in vice & cut as far as  it can then turn & cut from other side.
See that`s the trouble with powered hacksaws they make you lazy. If I didnt have one I`d probably have sawn it by hand by now!

Hi Keith,
I made mine from the original articles in ME. Volume 168 issue numbers 3920 & 3922 & the last part is in Volume 169 issue 3924. I changed a few bits & used some different size gears from the scrapbox (think they were Boxford). Can`t recall any problems during the build & if there were any the sheer pleasure of not having to use a hacksaw has made me forget them!
Any questions drop me an email
Regards  Alan

Thread: Tool and cutter grinders

Tom,
Buy your cutter grinder & make your own surface grinder. See MEW issues 45 & 46. It did the job for me!!
