Thread: strange metal |
14/03/2012 22:53:03 |
I recently had a sort out of some steel rounds which i had not moved for a couple of years,Some of it was beginning to rust slightly, But three peices of about 8 inces long by inch and a half dia where bright as a new pin, But the end faces where very rusty,It is strongly magnetic, It is not stainless Not plated and not sheathed and it machines beautifully, So i cut bout 3 inches off,Faced off both ends and put it outside exposed to the rain and the fog,3days later the ends where totaly rusty but the outside dia was still bright,Anyone got any ideas on what type of metal this might be??, |
Thread: Nice Vice ?, |
02/03/2012 21:41:54 |
A few months ago i bought a vice, A three and a half inch vice with a reversable jaw,Which would then alow the vice to hold up to 7 inches,An impulse purchase,And it was in a pretty box with nice couloured pictures on it,It cost me £19-99, I brought it home and put it away as i was fairly busy at the time, I put it away in the workshop and almost forgot bout it,Rediscovered it a couple of days ago and thought i would have a good look at it,Imagine my dismay when i discovered it had polypropaline jaws,But as it turned out i decided this was not a bad thing as it would make the vice sympathetic to sensitive parts,The vice its self was quite heavy,(Cast grey metal it said on the box,) The screw was acme type and quite meaty its rotateable and quite veratile,I finished up liking it and thinking it was good value for the money Its made by Faithfull tools,( Im just a customer) i cant imagine i was the only one to buy one,Did you buy one?,And what do you think of it?I Think i might have bought it from Liddles,

Thread: More chat about sheds |
04/01/2012 21:34:35 |
Hi Frank, I read your post with considerable interest,And i agree with most of what
you have said,I am on my third and final shed,Each one has been a little
bigger than the one before,Which is a lesson for beginners contemplating
a shed for a workshop,Get the bigest you can afford!,Like myself most
people dont apreciate the value of space untill you run out of it,I know that
there are wonderfull projects built in sheds that are little more than large
toilets, And i aplaud the people who can work in that sort of confinement,
but for me space is king,You didnt mention the treatment of the fabric of
the workshop, I cosider this to be of considerable importance if the building
is to give good service over a long period, Perhaps other members of this
forum would like to comment on this subject,
Kind regards |

Thread: Ultrasonic cleaner |
22/12/2011 21:39:48 |
Thanks chaps I cant argue with what your saying, And thanks for taking the trouble
to say it, At my age i ought to have known better, But i dont have the
amount of cleaning to justify the cost of a proper one, And i also dont
have the space to put it,One dose not apreciate how valuable space
is until one runs out of it,
Best regards , |
21/12/2011 21:11:26 |
Liddles are doing a small ultrasonic cleaner for £19-99, Recomeded for cleaning jewlery-coins watch straps false teeth etc,Its quite small
doubt if er indoors can fit her teeth in it,Bought one, Tried it and i am
totaly unimpressed,After 8 minits buzzing no visible improvement to
the artical being tried,Could do better with a soft brass wire brush in
60 seconds,In my opinion a total waste of time and money, |
Thread: Cadmium, simple test for? |

them,Its a nice pic and is of course exatly like the one i have,And i

Martin No, once the unit is out of the lathe i can see no means of securing the
spindles to the unit,They seem to have been forced in or shrunk in, I can
see no way of removing them that dose not involve using a certiain amount
of force, And i am reluctant to use force, But there must be a way, I canot
be the first person to want to replace one of the tuffnol gears |
10/11/2011 23:16:39 |
Hiya martin, Yes there is a long grubscrew with a locking nut that holds the whole
tumbler reverse unit in the lathe,But my problem is how to remove
the spindles on which the tuffnol gears run from the unit once i have it
out of the lathe,But thanks for your input so far, |
10/11/2011 22:13:16 |
Hi Chaps, Must be somone here who knows how its done,I have a Myford
super 7,And on the tumbler reverse two tuffnol gears,One of the gears has
a single tooth missing,I have a new spare, Have removed the whole tumbler
reverse unit but cant see how to remove the the damaged gear, It looks like
it is a force fit in the unit,Dont want to get violent with it but is this a big hammer
and a drift job???, |

Thread: Unfamiliar leadscrew, |
05/11/2011 22:39:42 |
Hi chaps, I need to ask what might be considered a realy stupid question,
I have just aquired a nice super7 with gearbox and automatic
cross slide,I note that the leadscrew has a slot along its
length,What is the purpose of this,???,Thanks, |
Thread: Mystery tool, What is it for,?? |
28/10/2011 09:42:24 |
Hi John You are not the first person to sugest that the item is incompleat,And you
have looked at it realy closly to notice the wear marks on the front end of
the mandrell, Most people miss that small clue,So i have to say that your
sugestion on what the purpose of the item is is probably the most
plausable i have had,So you win the coconut,I thank all of you chaps for
your contributions,I have to add that i have over several years of going
to car boot sale and auctions etc, aquired a number of unidentified
engineering related items, So from time to time i will submit one or two
to this very usefull forum for your valued opinions,
Thanks Charlie,
