These chestnuts of which you southeners are speaking - are they sweet chestnuts or conker type ? |

SOD- If your work stand is a cheapy like mine then change the MDF tops asap. Cut the new tops from scrap ply or whatever. I'm saying this because mine collapsed when I sat on it and caused some injury, and bent the pressed tin frame. The MDF was a bit damp but never wet. |
Thread: Why Column gear shift |
01/12/2017 12:00:31 |
I thought column change and bench seats was an idea by the government to increase the birth rate after the war. A friend of mine , who had a zephyr with a heater and radio, used to hire it out. Had to be careful tho' because the valve radio with a power pack under the passenger seat used a lot of power and could flatten the battery. |

Had a quick look thru' but didn't see anything. No matter maybe my computer or maybe just me. Have to go - there's a Russian lady waiting for me, according to my email. |

Are there any pictures of these wonderous creations so us ordinary mortals can see them ? |
Thread: Drill out a ht c/s allen screw |
22/11/2017 15:17:10 |
Crankcase packing screws were always fitted with some sort of locker, could be very strong. May need heat to shift. I used to work with a chap who was bantam racer, did quite well in the TT years ago. |
Thread: Chester or Warco. |
22/11/2017 10:53:27 |
I bought a Chester DB8 lathe a few years ago, it worked straight off and still does. A few tweaks and adjustments over the years and cheap hyd. oil. Chester were not the best at after sales tho'. I've got Chinese grass cutter, 4x4 tractor, generator, strimmer, cultivator , water pump etc. All work well, all need a bit of attention from time to time. |
Thread: Guy Martin - WW1 Tank - Channel 4 |
22/11/2017 10:45:22 |
Has anyone mentioned how all this was done in the timescale ? A young German model maker had converted the original drawings into CAD and then JCB converted them into their system for CAM. Well I think I've got that right. |
Thread: Myford Correct Oils |
21/11/2017 14:00:02 |
I'm sure I've posted this before- be careful of chainsaw chain oil' some are enviromentally friendly and degrade quickly. Good for the planet but not so for the lathe. |
Thread: Engineering exhibitions etc in Scotland |

Football? Didn't realise you all are in the far south. There are a few preserved railways and museums about, some seem to try and hide away. The steam train Fort William to Mallaig is well worth it if only for the view, even tho' it now is the harry potter special. Brechin has a bit of preserved track and does runs. Alford motor museum worth a look, events thru' the year. Wetherspoons in Inverurie named after an engine built in the loco works ! |

Aberdeen changes every time I go there, pub names change all the time. But I don't go often , problems getting home after. Don't have to go to far north, the beers are sent south, as far as Aberdeen anyway. Still not found any model eng. shows yet. |
18/11/2017 16:28:09 |
Ship @ Banff ? Lemon Tree @ Aberdeen ? Plenty of good beer round here, mostly from the far north eg Orkney. Time never wasted, today I got a compressor that " didn't work " |
Thread: Windows 10 printing problem |
13/11/2017 14:01:52 |
I've a similar problem, checked the printer was shown in box. Correct printer was shown, an HP something. but will not work. Discovered by accident that if HP generic ( or similar )is shown then works OK. |
Thread: end mills and slot drills |
10/11/2017 16:17:02 |
A slight change of topic- I need to put a couple of slots in some brass. I was going to drill and file but realised I did not have a small enough file so have thought to mill them. Will be 4mm wide and 15 deep in brass. Any recommendation for type of mill ? I'm guessing end mill in lathe spindle and work mounted on cross slide. Never done any milling this small and never in lathe. |
Thread: Found these behind RPM readout plate on lathe? |

Years ago, when I worked at De Havilands, there were posters on the walls about not leaving stuff in the planes. Photos of all sorts, a packet of fish and chips is one I remember. |

I use that little cubby hole for storing stuff, tool hight setter for one. Didn't bother to put the cover back on. |
Thread: Bitcoin crashes... |
08/11/2017 16:05:37 |
Let's combine two topics- Use all the spare power from wind generators at night and " mine" bitcoins. The country is saved !. |

1st law of finance - The more money you have , the less tax you pay. BTW I hear that tulips are the next big thing, don't tell anybody tho'. |
06/11/2017 15:29:54 |
I've read the stories about mining bitcoin etc., and various " explanations " as to how it works, I am no wiser. I know I am thick but the whole thing smells. |
