Thanks for that. BTW lathe is 4" CH. The slot width is not critical as side play taken by shim. I've seen some saws with 3/8" and 1/2" bores but I thought that seemed a bit spindly. Maybe buy a bigger dia. and 4mm thick ? Low revs 100rpm at 4" dia.? Lathe is pretty good for rigidity, have parted off with 3mm blade in steel. Only about 55mm center ht. over cross slide so will have to check figures.

I am thinking to buy a slitting saw, about 65mm dia with 20 hole and about 3 thick. I will need to make a mandrel for it. I want some slots in brass, about 20 deep and 25 long and 4 wide.Question- what RPM to run, can I cut 20 deep in one pass and can I offset by 1mm to widen the slot ? Sounds simple but never used a saw before so need some answers before I buy one. PS will be used on 42 ch lathe with the brass mounted on crosslide.and fed underneath the saw.

If a motor gets hot when working hard the best thing to do is let it run with no load, just for a minute or two. Switching off when hot is not good for it. This applies to any motor, but especially to small motors such as hobby lathes, hand drills etc.

Looks interesting, keep us informed. I did a search for the drawings of gas regulator but can't find them. I did find a large cardboard box full of mouse nest and fear this may be them. But I am still hopeful.

I've got a bad back ,maybe not so bad as some. I put my socks, pants and trousers on while standing up. One leg at a time obviously. Never thought about 'till now.

Just to confuse things a bit more - I just bought some rust proofer liquid for my car, clearly labelled Loctite and branded, seems good stuff for the job, but would not like to hold a shaft with it.

Never seen so many wasps/hornets this year, early for the north. May well be Queens, but They are the last thing I need, think I prefer a single hornet.

Last time I was at a steam rally the tent with static models had a few running (on request ) , the guy just pushed his foot down. He had a large vintage style foot pump connected to the engines. Seemed ok for the short demos.

Back in the 60's/ 70's there was a man selling details on converting a standard gas bottle reg. to run engines on bottled gas, this for full size motors. Basically the comp. spring in the reg. was replaced by a tension spring. Set up by altering this spring until gas just stopped flowing, engine vacuuam then set the gas flow as needed. Sorry can't remember details, but somewhere I have the drawings, or could easily be found on web. I built one, so must be easy, and it ran a small stationary engine. I was going to put on my car but a mate got caught and was threatened with fines etc. If interested I will try and find the drawings.

I had a 500 Vincent, one of the nicest singles I ever had. All the Vincent bits like screws with offset tommy bars and the brilliant front forks, but a normal g/box and clutch. Sold it for £50, those were the days.

Dave W, you may well be correct, it was 30 -40 yrs ago when I was in that job. For interest, a new pole was put in about 6 yrs ago by BT, it looked as if creosoted . Now the bottom of pole is thick in black tarry stuff and the top is nice clean wood. What's that likely to be ?

Pressure treated tantalised timber has been used for years now. We used it for farm buildings and it will last many years, in some cases outlasts concrete posts and even steel, esp. when in contact with animal waste.

I was going to suggest what ndiy has just said,ie. speed up the genny moter at switch on. Maybe a bit of wire, or a compliant wife. I have a 2.4 kw genny, 3kw max. Most tools run ok but one 9" grinder and a chainsaw do sometimes make it cut out without a bit of boost. Never any trouble running, or reliability problems. No doubt I will be told not to do it.

Been hit by a Maybug while riding a M/c, not pleasant. Worst by far was a large egg, in the face, while riding under some trees. Don't know what the egg was except it was big and took a lot of cleaning, especially the goggles.

There are laws against breaking into a house, doesn't stop it happening.

When any wine, beer etc. is left long enough it will go-off, so I am told. Why not make it into vinegar ? Plenty of how-to on the net. I'm told these specialist vinegars are expensive ,so you are making money.

I can't advise on the actual uprights and pole etc. as don't know the details of your setup. But the actual lifting I will suggest an "endless chain" type hoist. Cheap, light, and very controllable.

I don't cut threads very often, I use a round silver steel cutting tool with a 60 deg. point hand ground. This can be used for internal and external threads in the correct tool holder. Would this work for a leadscrew thread and nut, with the appropriate angle ground on ? Then the exact angles don't matter, so long as you don't need a spare in 10 years.
