Thread: Glasses
04/07/2014 19:18:27

G'day all.

Sort of on-topic - many years ago, when the ME Ex was at Seymour Hall and also at Olympia there used to be a small stand run by a chap who looked like Col. Sanders. He had a little kettle on the boil and would demonstrate the misting up of glasses and then apply his remedy ...Clersite rings a bell?? He stopped attending before I did and I haven't been able to locate the product since. It certainly worked and the effect on old 'specs' was remarkable ... vision just like when first supplied. The stuff was sold in a tiny round pill-box like container and pink in colour, and PRICY!. Applied by finger and thumb and polished off by tissue. I suspect it was probably jeweller's rouge mixed with a soapy 'gunge'. Anybody remember same and/or come across it lately?

Thread: NIFE cells
27/06/2014 18:53:55

First introduced to NiFe cells in '58 on the Beverley conversion course. Ideal for the Bev 'cos so much of the working bits were electric. Lots and lots of them in the battery box a flat topped storage area, much used as a rest area! From memory (not necessarily reliable) fast charge and discharge and no sulphation problems etc.

Thank you, John.

That is an interesting point - presumably, over grass the humidity is increased? Very relevant here 'cos being within 30' or so of the sea, humidity levels vary between 50 and 90% - direct variation with the tide state! Makes installation INSIDE w/shop more sensible, methinks.

Michael, Clive and John, thank you.

I don't think I shall be using it for windy drills or similar - just running supplies for a couple of Wilesco and Mamod sets, so nothing too demanding. My previous compressors have been standard noise generators and I always viewed them with slight alarm ... anything that noisy MUST be about to explode!!embarrassed The replacement is a Bambi, so much less wear and tear on the nervous system!! Location choice is between IN the w/shop, insulated, dry, dehumidified or in the carport high salt water humidity, variable temperature etc. so probably no contest!!

G'day again.

Starting to re-populate the 'to-be-built' workshop ready for the insurance company's agreement on rebuild costs. Managed to get hold of a compressor to replace the one which was sea-damaged. I'm thinking of making a fairly permanent installation with the compressor in the rear of the carport rear wall - this backs onto the new w/shop. I'd like to run a feed tube through the wall and have a manifold outlet - 3,4,6?? Are such things available plus suitable feed tube and would it be feasible safety-wise etc.?

Any comments welcome

Thread: Models to make you feel inadequate?
21/06/2014 22:13:16

G'day all.

I seem to remember that JS pointed out the effect that Cherry Hinds's exhibition models had on we ordinary mortals. As a one-time model aircraft builder/flier, this link left me utterly stunned - **LINK**.

OK, so the production equipment is beyond anything you and I could hope for , but the finished result is almost unbelievable. Then the flying!!! - for those who haven't flown radio, bear in mind that you have to reverse the orientation for flying towards and away ... try that in full size!! Enjoysmiley

13/06/2014 14:24:02

I've just done a 'retake' on those photo's from JS ... why?? Something seemed amiss and I couldn't place it. Second time round I realised what it was - NO MESS! Seen quite a few photo's of factories (UK) in the past and NEVER one as clean as in John's pics. Are they all like that over there or have they had a special clean-up for the 'sheriff of Nottingham'?wink

Thread: Electrical installation
13/06/2014 14:09:55

Lots of good advice there, chaps - thank you.

Just as reassurance, for anyone who thought otherwise - I shall NOT be doing any of the installation work, gas or electrical!! Have done a bit of DIY wiggly amps stuff in the past (quite safely and successfully) but this is way beyond my remit!

Thanks again

Many thanks, chaps.

That 450mm (18"? in old money) limit is interesting and should be useful ammunition!!wink

Maybe a case for careful examination of intended use and adjust accordingly. One thing for sure, the workshop WILL have the waist-high version!!

G'day all.

IF (big 'if' our claim assessors ever get their act together (6 months so far!) we may be able to start the house rebuild. It is going to be pretty major and will entail an almost complete rewire.

The question is - is there any LOGICAL/ELECTRICAL advantage in positioning electrical sockets at skirting board level as distinct from waist/dado level? It has always been a source of irritation (and back strain) for me but SWMBO and predecessor both think it 'looks better'.

The other disadvantage of the low level location was shown when the house was inundated - INSTANT electrical short!

Thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

V8Eng - re. ground-living bees, some time back I had an old decrepit shed dismantled and the area concreted for the base of a replacement. Lifting the old base revealed a bumble bee 'nest', well populated and built on an enormous collection of empty snail shells. Unfortunately, it was too late to recover and/or rescue so I had everything that I could gather up put into a similar area behind the garage. The bumbles were obviously much confused and took several days to find the new home. I hope they settled in but ultimately all to no avail - the whole lot was demolished/washed away in the December 'surge'. Great shame - I do like bumble beessmiley

Mr Stephenson - having attained (on this forum) the status of 'National Treasure' kindly take a little more care of yourself!!! Your Friday night escapade has produced some, obviously, painful results. Take a bit more care - or more water with the Scottish wine! Best wishes for a swift recovery.

Roger

Join the club - membership fee is whatever you paid for the collection of mental misery purveyed by Microsoft under the guise of 'computer'.

These things are the spawn of the Devil!angrydevil I have, to my eternal shame, used them since the early 90's and have the 'rage lines' to show for it. How ANY system based solely on the transposition of a series of 0s and 1s can generate so much misery is beyond me.

I have just spent 4 days trying to re-instate internet access on my desktop. Microsoft's 'Help' system equates to motorcycle ashtrays. Looking up the problem on Google generated 19 pages of similar misery but with a variety of solutions - none of which worked for me. The eventual answer was so convoluted as to defy simple description and involved the use of an Android tablet, the output of an electronics 'fiddler' in the US of A and a cable 'hook-up' that I hadn't used for about ten years! Joseph Heller MUST have worked for Microsoft!!

Yes, I could have migrated to Ubuntu or similar or shelled out even more cash for the rip-off delights of Apple (Do a search for 'Apple Mac problems' but sticking with something which is vaguely familiar has its 'attractions'.

My advice? ... Most helpful has been the aviation forum Pprune.org, which has a Computer sub-forum with inputs from a number of people who demonstrably understand these things. They don't have all the answers but have, over the years, dragged me from confused beginner to confused long-time userembarrassed

Stick with it, Roger - it won't get any better but you will become accustomed to the frustration and anger!

An odd query ... had a notification in my home inbox that a John Smith (member of the forum) was trying to contact me re. one of my classifieds on this site. There was no accompanying text. If Mr Smith would like to try again with a message/query/W.H.Y. I would be happy to reply.

Thread: Wills and workshops
23/02/2014 14:59:21

Interesting, this ... some parallels with my present position - workshops destroyed and contents spread beneath seawater, sludge and wreckage. The recoverable items - remarkably numerous, are now divided between temporary shed and various storage areas courtesy of local builder. My decision to radically downsize was helped by the incident and the surplus items are for disposal at whatever price they fetch. All of these workshop tools, bits, whatever, were bought originally for my pleasure. Having them around for (in some cases) 30+ years has amortised their value (to me) to scrap or zero ... they don't owe me (or my relatives), anything. If a dealer or anyone else is willing to make the effort to remove them and make value of them, monetary or otherwise, good luck to them - I've had my value out of them.

The lady in JS's encounter is not untypical - "I paid £xxx for this so it must still be worth that much" Well, maybe it is but the owner will have had that much pleasure from it during its time in use, so let someone else share the pleasure. As an example, one of the sheds held a very low mileage Honda 90 which I couldn't use any more - kick start and gammy leg. Possibly a couple of hundred to someone prepared to get it road ready but a young labourer in the builder's team is now the proud owner has made a marvellous job of it and can't stop grinning!!

One doesn't have to go the mercenary route but it may need a bit of a shock to the system to provide the impetus!

Thread: To dump or de-rust?
26/01/2014 15:38:07

Thank you Geoff - the molasses method sounds interesting. Will go for the citric acid first as it sounds a little faster but maybe the molasses mix residue could be fermented for a 'different brew'wink

More standing in the wind and rain tomorrow picking through yucky bits and pieces - 'dump, keep, dump, keep, etc.' Why doesn't Nature have its spiteful days in the Summer? Hey Ho!thinking

Thank you all for the kind thoughts ... exactly Hopper!. JB - yes, apparently it was covered, as was the main shed (garage). Certainly not going to dump major items but almost unbelievable quantities of 'that'll come in handy one day' type things have gone in the skip already! Much more to be sorted through and, dependant on decision-making may well appear here as 'Sale Bargains'
