Not far up the road from Andrew and myself is RAF Alconbury where the upgraded U2 the TR1 was based for many years, my Father worked for W Vintens, makers of photo reconnaissance camera's and pods, and he used to go to work on the stand at the Farnborough shows and always came home with loads of black and white photographs of various aircraft he could acquire for me, most I still have. |

The best ground rumble I experienced was at Mildenhall watching a Blackbird SR71 taking off, one year at the IAT Fairford my friends and I got tickets for the Friday and Monday as well as the weekend, we sat in the stands next to the runway and during the day a Blackbird landed released its brake chute and taxied away, a Marina pickup arrived and after struggling the driver gave up trying to get it into the pick up and drove off, within five minutes a truck load of americans turned up to get the chute into the back of the truck and after another amusing struggle they managed it and drove off.

Thread: square headed bolt |

Brian, I would still go the round bar route, no intermittent cutting and no wasted time clocking a square bar true, machine four sides could be done quicker.

I know I'm about to ask a stupid question but why not make the bolt out of round bar and then either mill the square or cut and file it square. Martin P |

Thread: Hand cleaner |
22/06/2015 09:32:32 |
Gentlemen, I hate using gloves when working on dirty jobs as I find they get in the way but have found through my job that if my hands are still mucky after using hand cleaner I wear latex gloves for half an hour and my hands sweat themselves clean, at home I use Swarfiga Orange.

Thread: Best vice |
22/06/2015 09:22:43 |
Gentlemen, A slight step sideways, when I was an apprentice you had to spend time in all dept's including company security and one afternoon at the end of the day shift I was with the guards watching everybody leave, it was also raining, when a gentleman on a push bike rode past wearing a yellow wax cape. As he passed he was seen to fall off the bike for no apparent reason so the guards went to assist to find that he had a large bench vice tied by a rope around his neck which had been balanced on his crossbar and had fallen off dragging him with it

Rik, It was a pleasure to put a face to a name, one of the conditions of restoring and showing Stationary Engines is the fact that you have to spend the weekend constantly damp, you get used to it

14/06/2015 17:37:45 |
Gentlemen, Try getting a dose of Neuropathy in both your feet, I cant feel a thing but you end up with your foot black and blue and cant remember why, joking aside thats why I wear safety boots because I cant feel anything and dont want a broken foot. Martin P

Thread: Tapping Stainless Steel. |
13/06/2015 15:03:13 |
Mark, I work with stainless 316 on a daily basis with my job and I find that standard taps with lots of tapping compound and one turn then back off, one turn then back off works well for me. Every time you back off another dip into the tapping compound. Martin P

If I remember correctly the Sepecat Jaguar was one of the first Aircraft to be built unstable, apparently if the computers stopped working the pilot used the yellow and black handle between his legs as there was no point trying to manually fly the aircraft, I saw a film a long while ago which showed a Jaguar in flight and you could see the control surfaces constantly moving. Thread: linear bearing bar |
30/05/2015 12:52:54 |
Ian, After forty years as a machine tool fitter on all manner of machine tools I've seen it happen, even hardened bar will show signs of wear from the the balls running up and down the bar if not lubricated regularly.

I agree, chrome will peel of if it picks up muck, it is hardened bar that you require. Martin P |

Steven, I have in the past managed to get a tap out by making a small centre punch type tool out of hardened silver steel and then tapping the broken tap out anticlockwise until you can get hold of it. Martin P |
