Dave, Where abouts do you live, one of us might be near by and could tell you where to shop. Martin P |

I would buy what you need plus a few extra, if you buy a selection box you could end up with bolts and screws you may never use. Martin P |

I can see why CNC might not be welcome in Model Engineer, but surely it has a place in Model Engineering Workshop? As the latter focuses on tools and techniques it should be covering modern as well as established techniques. Carbide inserts, 3D-printing, CNC, CAD, SVG, microcontrollers, DRO, VFD, Superglue, Stepper Motors, Metric, PPE, Brushless, Diamonds, bring it on! Agreed, although personally I'd leave politics out of it. Andrew PPE = Philosophy, Politics & Economics - an almost obligatory Oxford degree for wannabe prime ministers. Gentlemen, I'm not poo pooing any of the above, I've just spent the last 40 years of my working life installing, commissioning, training and servicing machining centres, Robots, Automation, Injection moulding machines and machine tools all using PLC's, CNC etc they are all fantastic machines and can spit out repetative pieces by the thousand day in and day out but nobody is ever going to get me to understand why a home model engineer would ever want one to make one item, they were designed to make repetive items quicker and easier than several toolmakers could with lathes, mills, grinders and foundry's etc. The enjoyment I get is to make something from nothing with the basics, you go into a jobbing shop today with CNC mills and lathes and you will find a couple of guys in front of computers writing out the programmes and dry running them and then they give the disc to the operator who loads the programme and presses the green button and minds the machine doesnt run out of material, wheres the fun in that. Thread: Why do both power hacksaws and bandsaws exist? |
18/03/2019 11:08:54 |
As stated in previous posts I have a bandsaw type power saw, it was given to me by a friend ten years ago and needed a lot of work as it had stood outside and was rusty and seized. Recently I fitted a new motor when I realised it was capable of being used as a vertical bandsaw, it was not possible to reverse the old non original motor, I have obtained a piece of 10mm aluminium plate to make a table and when done I will have a small vertical bandsaw looking for a new home giving me some space. Near me is a saw company who are very helpful with advice and their blades are not badly priced for my saw. Martin P |
Thread: Windows Update (Again) |
17/03/2019 14:03:21 |
Gentlemen, These posts give me cause to ask a simple question, I have used windows since I bought my first computer over forty years ago, I can honestly say I have never had an issues apart from replacing slow worn out computers and all new machines have had the latest software upgrades, on that note why do others have such issues as recorded here, I tinker but I'm no expert when it comes to computer functions so is it that I leave well alone and others fiddle that is the problem. Thread: Will we be able to see Asteroid 2019 EA2 when it passes earth on March 22nd. |
16/03/2019 20:53:51 |
We are still looking for a tiny object thousands of miles away going like the bat out of hell across a very dark sky, looking for St Pauls on a stationary, relative, object would be a very lot easier.

I was led to believe it’s true speed would only be 5 km/second, still I take your point a serious telescope will probably be necessary, unless it passes during the hours of darkness when perhaps it might be illuminated by reflected sunlight. Dave W My speed is a googled average for said objects, 5 km/second is still 18000 mile an hour so its still not hanging around. Martin P |
16/03/2019 16:45:54 |
I would assume it would need a serious telescope to see it, if it passed half way that will be 119,000 miles away from earth travelling at 25 kilometers a second, 90000 kilometers an hour\56250 miles an hour. Martin P |
Thread: Windows Update (Again) |
16/03/2019 15:22:11 |
I regularly get updates from Microsoft and none have come via email, a message appears on screen update, now or later, I pick now if not busy it carries out update, reboots and done. Never had issues afterwards. Martin P |

Well now we have two moderators getting into CNC maybe we can get the ability to upload other file types to the site so we can share g code? Although interesting it would be a shame if the forum and magazine became more CNC orientated instead of day to day model engineering. Martin P |

The conditions to log a user out must be defined in the program that is this website so it should be possible for the support team to explain the rules. Mike They have. It's been explained before, but again, 1 it uses cookies 2 it's time limited 3 you can only be logged in on one device 4 the server has a finite number of connections, if it runs out an incative user gets logged out to let someone else on. Neil, As said before by me I'm logged on permanently, at night I turn my computer off and the next day I turn the laptop on again and I'm still logged in so certainly not time limited. The only time I have to log back in is when I clear my history which also clears my log ins. Martin P |
Thread: Hoover bags |
07/03/2019 20:25:50 |
Gentlemen, I assume that like me most of you have a vacuum in your workshops for tidying up. I have a cheap Tesco's model which has disposable bags and I can get through them when busy machining so I've found away of making them reusable, I've bought a packet of paper binders which slip onto say twenty sheets of paper to form a hinge. I cut the folded and glued bottom off my vacuum bags and slide the binder in its place so that when the bag is full I slide the binder off empty the bag and refit it to use the bag again. Hi Matt, you need a retainer compound, if you wish to use Loctite, one of these should be fine **LINK** but there are other makes and their colours may differ. Martin, do you mean 638. Regards Nick. As Eric Morecambe used to say "right numbers but not necessarily in the right order" Martin P |

I've just reamed out a 1/2 inch hole and put a 1/2" dia piece of silver steel into the hole, it was a nice sliding fit, I've used Loctite 683 and the shaft is in there solid. Martin P |

Arrived to find RAF Cranwell heaving with parked cars and a very low cloud base, it rained all the way up but wasnt when we got there, bang on 15:15 all nine came in from the south in Diamond Nine with a Hawk on their port side obviously for taking pictures, sadly the idiot behind the camera didnt allow the camera time to focus so picture not perfect. |
