Thread: New legislation that could affect us all.

Sadly I have to admit that when I enter any toilet I switch the toilet roll around away from the wall before I use it, I've also noticed that you have to drop the toilet lid down to reach the flush button especially on new builds.

I recently bought and acquired a couple of angle poise lamps with low watt bulbs fitted, today I bought a pair of 60 watt equivilant LED bulbs, a little dear but the light they give out is excellent particulary as one is used on my lathe, the other is on my bench.

Derek,

I have had a machine mart version for a least 5/6 years and I make copper fuel tanks for my stationary engines and I use all three tools. Lovely bit of kit.

Jason Its not a good idea to identify to the scrapman where you live,he or his mates may come calling when you are out and get all your stock.

Totally agree, I used to get regular un requested visits from caravan dwelling pick ups until it came to a head when a trilby hatted gent knocked on my front door asking if I wanted to sell the dolly tub he had seen, it was behind my garage at the bottom of my garden, the only access was past the front of my house, we had a six foot wooden fence with double gates and a single gate erected all locked from the inside and my car now sits against the gates at night, the pick ups stopped coming and stuff stopped disapearing.

Jim, you engine is coming along nicely. Good things come to those who wait take their time

between making swarf I have had a bit more of a play with the RMC and it is starting to run for longer and stop when I want it too. Sorry for holding the camera in portrait mode though it does suit the upright shape of the engine.

Also did some of the column for the vertical oscillator.

Jason,

A lovely looking and running engine, it has the sound of an engine that could improve with a light load, I hear them often on the rally field, particularly Petter two strokes.

Good idea!

I think I would not modify my axle-stands themselves but make longer-version columns that can be swapped with the originals as and when needed. (On mine, the columns can simply be lifted out.)

I've often resorted to clamping battens across the workshop doorway at the right height, not just for the band-saw but also the bench-drill.

I think that is exactly what Martin has done.

regards

That is what I did do, I still use the axle stands so they are now duel purpose.

Thread: Why mostly manual cars in UK
06/12/2019 22:11:21
Posted by RMA on 06/12/2019 20:32:47:

Discussions about cars are always the same so it's best to maintain a sense of humour. You get the 'experts' who've never had an automatic tearing them apart. You get people who have tried them many year's ago and preferred a manual, and you get owners of modern automatics singing their praises.

I've owned many automatics since the '60's and definitely know which I prefer. I've towed boats and a caravan and never experienced the problems other's have mentioned here. Rover 3500 pulling a boat up a wet slipway....no problem. 2.9 and 3 litre Granadas towing a caravan on many difficult camp sites.....no problem, and the modern 8 speed sport auto box which I have now really does behave itself in snow (not that we get much nowadays).

Modern boxes learn your style of driving and select the optimum gear for the right condition. Mine also works with the sat nav and selects the right ratio before entering a corner. With 8 to choose from the change is usually quite undetectable.

Modern roads are so cluttered with umpteen signs, heavy traffic, pedestrians and cyclists....auto boxes really do reduce the workload and make life so much easier! For those who have never driven one I highly recommend a trial. But there are always those who resist any change, maybe they still use a starting handle?

Edited By RMA on 06/12/2019 20:34:00

RMA,

There is one thing that you forgot to point out and that is some of us will never be able to own and drive an eight speed auto sport and have to give our experiences based on what we can afford to drive, me included.

I do a lot of towing and there is nothing worse than an automatic when you are on a muddy slippery field, you need to feel what the car is doing and that cant be done without a clutch otherwise the wheels spin up and make things worse, a manual box everytime for me.

A slight aside, I was sent to Martin Baker's site on the Isle of Man to service some machine tools many moons ago, I had never been before and when I walked out of the Airport building I got into a cab and said the Martin Baker Factory please, he drove 50yds and did a 180 deg turn and 50 yds again on the other side of the carriageway stopped and said there you are sir no charge. Silly me.

From experience I can state that sonic booms and ejection seats going off sound very similar.

Martin,

As a passenger I wouldn't be to chuffed if I heard a bang and saw a flash from the front of a passenger plane cheeky

As an aviation enthusiast I've never heard a sonic boom and even though im only 35 miles from Buncefield I never heard that either but I dont have a problem with RAF sonic booms when allowed as its much better than a rogue aircraft any day.

I must say I'm not surprised parcels etc dont get delivered to properties, I have a part time job delivering medication for a local chemist and its amazing how many door bells that dont work and knockers that have been silenced, I have to knock seven bells out of some doors to get attention, If I slip a note through the door and leave within half an hour I've had a message to go back and I then get my ear bent "BECAUSE THEY WERE IN"

Thread: A unlucky accident
21/11/2019 13:25:39

Gentlemen,

I received a phone call the other evening from a friends wife, my friend, late 60s/70s, had asked her to ask me to help sell his Stationary engines, I enquired why because during the year we rally together and no mention had been made. His wife told me he had been in the Lister Hospital for the last eleven weeks, they had visited their son and my friend went with their son into the garage where for reasons unknown he fainted, unfortunately he banged the back of his neck on the way down and is now paralised from the neck down and waiting to be transfered to Stoke Manderville Hospital, sadly it seems that he is to remain that way, Life can be a bugger sometimes.

Good grief, you need to be poised over the keyboard ready to post these days, or you get gazumped!

The Skyvan morphed into stretched versions, the Shorts 330 and 360. The wing always looked far too small, especially for an aircraft that could operate from relatively short runways.

Sorry Andrew devil I've been out doing my part time delivery job this afternoon and when I got home I made SWMBO and I a cup of tea and I sat down with it and saw an email and answered the thread, I may not know much but aircraft recognition is as you know an interest of mine.

Martin,

Its a Short SC7 Skyvan made by Shorts of Belfast, **LINK** they tend to be used these days as a bus for parachutists.
