Ian, I fully agree with your sentiment, I'm a driver, part time, delivering medication and I meet upto 30+ people in an afternoon and I'm amazwd on how many say to me that they havent seen anybody for days particularly pensioners who cant get out, in a lot of cases even the neigbour's dont knock. Having done a quick search on the internet and looked in the books I have I tend to agree with Chris's rule of thumb idea but I've found this http://www.davesclocks.net/uploads/5/8/9/1/5891949/dcr_deadbeat_calc.xls which may be of use to you.

Thread: Car says catalyser is blocked |
21/10/2020 16:58:22 |
From what I understand, ...the theory goes....the on board computer is set for the DPF to need attention due to "potential blockage" by the additive residue regardless of the actual differential pressures across the core at around 120,000 miles. If anyone knows an alternative real reason I'm ready to learn ! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was told by the Subaru Dealership that if left without doing anything it would end up wrecking the Turbo, my car also doesnt use additive. Ladmachining, In my working life I drove many diesel vehicles mostly Vauxhall cars and vans and none of them gave any activity that you describe, my current vehicle is a 2009 Subaru Forrester 2.0 litre turbo diesel and that needs a fault analiser plugged into it to see the regen history, I get no performance change or increase in fuel consumption, she is regularly garaged serviced and spends her working life towing a trailer with my hobby in going to rallies all over the country so life isnt easy for her, except the last six months but its still happened twice. Clive, If that is all it takes to clean yours your lucky, 2018 my Subaru said the Particulate filter was blocked so took it along our local dual carriageway at 70 in third, no joy so paid a visit to nearest dealership and they removed the filter and cleaned it for £500. It ran for a year and up popped the alarm again so took it to village garage and he plugged in his box of tricks and it wouldnt let him force a regen so took it to another Subaru dealership as the other garage had lost theirs, they checked it over and said it was chocker and they wouldnt clean it so £2000 later it was fitted with a new filter, pipework and pressure sensors. Its now a year on and the alarm hasnt shown but I do give the car a low gear high rev run once a month to clear its throat, which I might add I was doing before the first time it happened. My wife said sell the car but she wouldnt understand that I would have to give it away as nobody would buy it with such an expensive fault. Martin P |

Thread: Electric Smart Meters |
13/10/2020 17:19:42 |
I have smart meters fitted for both electric and gas, they have caused me no issues and have saved me money and time. The electric meters are fitted where the original meters were which is right at the back of our pantry at floor level under the stone slab and to read the old meters required the pantry to be partially cleared by us to gain access and it was a slide under the shelf on my belly, the money saved would have been the meters being moved at my cost to the outside for better access. The electronic display shows, particularly my wife, how much it costs us and she can see what not to leave on in the house. Martin P |

Even though he might have a second hand one it would still be stripped and parts checked/replaced and then tested for reliability, finally it would also need to be certified. I spent several years as a volunteer at Duxford working on the Museums then Mary Alice B17G, we were restoring her to a static exhibit but were still required to maintain the work exactly as if she was to fly again, with exception of the engines everything else worked. Thread: Making a simple punch and die |
09/10/2020 18:00:17 |
Gentlemen, I'm about to make a suspension spring for a clock I have recently purchased out of spring steel, the spring will be 24.32mm long x 6mm wide and 0.06mm thick, it will have a hole 1.3mm dia and a rectangular hole 3.7mm long by 2mm wide. The round hole will be drilled with a 1.3mm drill and I intend to punch the rectangular hole, I'm going to make two plates which are bolted together with the suspension spring trapped between the two, the two holes will be repeated through the two plates, my question is I intend to make a punch from silver steel to replicate the rectangular hole, heat treated will the silver steel be strong enough to do the job. Thank you, Martin P |

Most auction houses sell specialist items, my local had an auction of clocks, grandfather etc and fine furniture last Friday, a couple of the grandfathers were very nice and expected to fetch £1000 + I bought a 1905 Junghans table/mantel clock which strikes every quarter and westminster chimes on the hour, Its all done on line and can reach the whole uk, the online site sends me sales from AH all around the uk. They charged more for them and made them more substantial. A new M300 will set you back about £27,000 today yet you can get a similar size import for £3,000, something has to give. They probably also sent a man to commission the new machine but that costs money too. People seem to be under the illusion that if they pay 1/10th the price they will still get the top spec product or simply don't know what sort of spec machine they need to make the things they want. We also don't know what spec the machine was at before Nir pulled the gibs out, not saying it is causing the problem but can't comment on the delivered machine as it's not in it's delivered state

I worked for several years at a Machine Tool Agency who sold machine tools from the world to UK buyers and when a machine was sold to the customer, he wasn't allowed to de crate the machine that was down to us the suppliers engineers, all the customer did was make sure the foundations etc, if required were in place and the first time the customer was allowed to touch the machine was when we had got the machine set to the manufacturers specs and produced what ever the machine was to be used for. The company sold equipment from Pillar drills to machine tools used in manufacturing. Martin P |
Thread: New Haven movement; Questions from a beginner |
28/09/2020 17:56:29 |
I've got an Ogee style New Haven clock, weight driven, similar to the picture, when I bought it the seller packed it very well putting stiff padding either side of the bottom glass plate to protect it which had a farm scene in black and gold, sadly the courier still managed to turn the glass into a jigsaw puzzle, I've printed a similar reverse image to go onto a new piece of glass when I restore the clock. The American clock companies flooded the European market in the late 1900's with mass produced clocks at prices that European manufacturers couldn't compete with, HAC was a German company, Hamburg American Clocks who used American production methods to try and compete, Martin P |

I have a wall clock, a recent purchase, which I know is American but without removing the mechanism I'm unable to say who made it, when I hung it on the wall it also had a minor wobble but once I got the "beat" sorted it settled down and the wobble has gone. Martin P |

I think the best answer is to say be grateful and count your blessings, and don't be sceptical of the toll 2020 is having on many people. Neil I'm not being sceptical of others but everybody is using the words for everything, a chap on tv tonight said he can now go swimming which is helping his mental issues which didnt seem relevant to me, I had a long time on the dole years with a child living in a village with no car. Lock this one off I'm not making my clear and I'm in for a drumming. Martin P

Why would that be any different under normal conditions and any way its married life, my wife and I have our moments but I wouldnt put it under a mental issue heading. Martin P |
