Thread: More chat about sheds |
07/01/2012 11:50:25 |
John,
I'm just finishing off a 12' x 8' Apex Roof I have recently built, the size was dictated by the space available, internally I have built two shelves 48" from the floor one is full width and 4' deep the other is down the left side approx 8' long and 2' wide. The shed is purely storage as my machines are in the garage. By the way I restore Stationary Engines.
There is plenty of room and I could see that it would make an excellent workshop.
It had one small problem in that the floor was only 11 mm thick so had to lay another 11 mm on top. The reason being is that my biggest engine weights in at 150kg on its trolley and I could see it going through the floor.
My shed came from Argos but purely for financial reasons as through the family I get 10% off. Otherwise happy.

Gentlemen,
I have one of the best material stockists I have ever found, unfortunately he retires in four months. Its a good friend of mine who manages a machine shop for a small engineering company. If I need something he wil see what they have, its all bar end scrap as their machines are CNC lathes but the materials vary depending on what they are making. In return I help with the occasional break down of their machinery, not the CNC, or any other little job I can perform.

With regards to the tides affecting the jig, where I served my apprenticeship was on a large maintenance department of a Lucas CAV manufacturing plant. I went with a fitter to investigate an out of tolerance centering lathe and we could find nothing wrong with it until a forklift went by. When we tapped the concrete pad it was sitting on we got a hollow sound so we brought the forklift back and parked it on the pad near the machine and the bubble shot up one end of its vial. The machine was moved and the whole floor was dug up and relayed.
Our college lecturer used to tell the tale of a Rolls Royce factory where he worked suffering from the trains over a mile away causing vibrations to appear on turning work.

Thread: Is it just me |
27/12/2011 15:33:44 |
Gentlemen,
I had to recently replace an old stairlift with a new one for my wife as I could no longer maintain it. We bought the old one off of EBay for £26 five years ago so cant complain. The reason for starting this topic is to find out whether other engineers, model or otherwise, look at equipment in the same way as I do.
The old Stairlift has sat outside for a couple of weeks waiting for me to dispose of it so today I have spent several hours stripping it for useful parts i.e. switches, micro switches, nuts, bolts, washers, bar stock, 90 deg reduction gearbox, rack and pinions the list goes on. You will notice that the motor is not listed as it is this item which was causing me most grief with its flywheel and brake assembly.
All parts I feel I should not take down the tip.
The alluminium stair track (fourteen steps long, approx 15') is going to the metal scrapman as I can get my money back by weighting it in.
Is it just me that does this.

I dont have the accuracy problem on the vertical axis, my machine is not a Warco but it is on the Grizzly Website, like you I do plan ahead but have never found the round column a problem.

Bob,
I'm curious as to why you baulk at a round column mill, I have one and it does what I expect of it willingly so whats the problem with them.

Billy,
Thanks for that, I do subscribe, I'm accused by my wife of spending to much time on my computers, what with writing articles for another magazine and editing a club newsletter, she will have a fit when I show her MEW from No 1 to read

I have only been getting MEW for the last couple of years as I find it useful to help me with ideas i.e. how people go about setting up or overcoming a problem. I would love in the future to obtain back no's to read.
I must say I do enjoy " making do and mending " also as its an acheivement to get something back up and running again and it does save money as well
