Thread: Hot air and stirling engines
09/07/2009 15:58:53
Hi Geoff,if you take your time you'll get them going, get rid of friction and air leaks.you may need to run them in by driving with an electric motor for an hour or two.Check that the displacer does't leak, submerge it in hot water and look for bubbles. This does'nt work on my engines as I make mine with a tube for the shaft,I just put mine in water and feed in air from my compressor. Hey Mark that price for Andy Ross's book is a little steep!I take it you are a Kiwi too,I live in Darfield Canterbury.I too use ball races from computor drives,I used to use ones from the hobby shop for RC cars.

I,d like to see the remaining parts for How to make a small Gas-Engine,I have the first parts in volume 1(1898),I'v started to build the little motor,it has a stroke of 3 3/4" and bore of 2",the fly wheel I made for mine is 14" dia, made of a sandwitch of 3 10mm thick discs, the outside ones with 10"dia cut out to form rings and the center one cut to form 6 spokes. The original engine with hot tube ignition developed 1/6 hp,but i'v redesigned it for spark, and petrol, although I may try LPG.I'v got the facsimile edition of volume one,and its all interesting, ads and all.Ian.S.C

Hi Mark,I can't help with the Andy Ross articles, but its good to see a fellow stirling engine builder.I'v built about a dozen of various types, none of them pressurised yet.I'll put pictures up when I work out how to do it.My books are two of James G. Rizzo's,I'd like to get his second hard cover book. Ian.S.C

I don't know where you are but is there not an engineering/machine shop someware near by.Have a wee word with someone there, you may at least get a look in the rubbish, because they must use slot-drills and end mills, and the boxes have got to go someware, and you never know what else you'll find! Happy hunting Ian s c.

If you can get MEW no8(Dec Jan 1992),there is quite a good artical called Chasing Vibrations by Bill Morris. It has a photo of the pattern generated on a bit of steel, and it shows the soft packing and bushings used to isolate the motor from the lathe.Do one thing at a time, and do the reversable things first before you start machining the saddle etc.Ian s c

Change from ordinary v belts to link belts ie nu T Link orPower Twist, this should help, try one belt at a time.It may also help if you can isolate the motor from the bed of the lathe with rubber packing(oil proof),if your motor is single phase these can cause vibration to a greater extent than 3ph.Good luck Ian s c

Hi Mark, the machine is powered though a transformer(x radio),sec(1) 11.3v for the motor control,sec(2)250v for the head, you proberbly don't want to get your finger in there!..../Ian S C new zealand.

Hi Mark,no the cicuit is powered by a double wound transformer,ie isolated from mains. One secondry is11.3v for the motor control, the other is 250v to the head, but you proberbly don't want to put your finger in there anyway.

Hi David,I had an artical accepted for printing just before the change over,do I have to resubmit it.It was from a English Mechanic and Mirror of Science magazine of 1868,about a steam or air engine made by M Eugene Bourdon (inventor of the Bourdon tube). There is an etching diagram.I'll send it snail mail if thats alright with you,I'm not too up on this thing yet!
