Thread: Recommended suppliers and services

I have found that all the companies mentioned and more have given me excellent service, ARC are legendary, CUP alloys, Macc models, BA bolts for SS fixings, Lee springs,The mesh company, EKP supplies for case hardening compound I could go on and on, we are very fortunate in our hobby to have such a wealth of excellent suppliers.

Thanks Ron, I am ok thanks, cutting a very long story short I have had a lot of severe upset tums since xmas so much so that on two occasions I was taken into A&E after blacking out, problem of low electrolyte levels. Visit to GP (yes an actual face to face) he arranged for this scan, all looked fine apart from a bladder full to bursting, they couldn't believe I was not in pain. So another day as they say. Decided that having tried this getting old business I am going to tick the opt out box.

Sounds like what is called an open protected frame, or drip proof, probably IP22 or 23 rating.

Thread: Using two torches
05/04/2021 22:12:47

Ah, that's the next question then, Y piece after regulator, or Y piece first and regulator for each torch.

it's a bit late in the day really to ask this question as I have almost finished my Emma Victoria boiler but noticed from various posts and videos in the past that a lot of people use two propane torches when silver soldering so my question is do you need two cylinders for this or is it possible (and safe) to connect to one cylinder.

Gave it a low pressure pneumatic soap bubble test to start with and have a few leaks to sort out, this is where I wish I was using something like oxy-propane rather than having a total re-heat every time with just propane.

Ah, I was assuming this was an external fan, usually mounted on a non drive end shaft extension the impeller being enclosed with a cowl that has apertures in the end, the centrifugal impeller draws air in axially through the apertures and discharged radially from the cowl circumference, guided over the motor. This is the method used on standard industrial totally enclosed squirrel cage motors. Yours maybe a non ventilated type or maybe the impeller is missing?

Regardless of fan direction the axial load will always be in direction away from motor, ie the fan impeller is trying to pull itself off the shaft (not that an impeller of that size will have much thrust anyway)

If blades are radial, (omni-directional) which they probably are on a small motor, flow will be much the same, if blades are sloping (uni-directional) flow will differ but again with such a small fan I wouldn't expect variation in thrust to be of any significance.

I am talking about centrifugal impellers here which in my experience is the norm for motor cooling fans, an axial impeller is different, flow direction will depend on rotation, flows in each direction dependent on blade angle. Thrust in the case of an axial flow will vary according to direction of rotation.

Thanks for input guys, finally got it sorted, don't ask me how though!

Tried driver update which didn't seem to make any difference, gave up in disgust.

Had another go today through a different route, I think, (as I said don't ask me to describe step by step) printer settings and management etc.

Looks like a comprehensive update so I have a load of shortcuts on screen to all sorts of features, found scan button and bingo. I can scan. Perseverance wins.

Can only assume it was one of the dreaded W10 updates.

Many thanks all.

Hi Ron, sorry for the delay, a quick trip to hospital for a ultrasound scan resulted in two days stay.

So as promised, a 23 drill fits nicely in the bore of 6mm gauge glass so that makes it about 0.154 inches.

Hope this helps.

Thread: Canon printer

The strange thing is printer will print ok and until recently scanned ok, probably 3-4 weeks ago I last scanned.

Laptop usually 2 to 3 metres away from router, now something just occurred to me, a few weeks ago had internet problems, low speed or stopping all together, BT advised me to press the reset button every few months (the one where you use with a sharp point in a little hole) maybe a coincidence maybe not. The only other thing is that it keeps saying cartridge needs replacing, we know the colour one does, but too tight to replace it yet.

I think I will try the update driver and risk the wrath of 'er indoors if it totally stuffs up the printer.

I have had Canon printers for some years now, probably replace every 5-6 years, compared to the first couple of printers we had many moons ago, Lexmark, Canon faff about whirring and clanking for ever, the Lexmark used to clack once and just got on with it.

Thanks for response guys, will let you know.

So you computer buffs any clues that might help me with this problem.

I have a Canon Pixma 3650 printer scanner, working wirelessly off my Win10 laptop. Had it for a while now and always worked ok but suddenly decided it will print ok but not scan, Clicking on 'Scan' shortcut I set up it just says 'To get started connect a scanner'. been through all sorts of settings and problem finders to no avail.

Any ideas guys.

I thought there was a parallel canal to the original one, if so why did the stranded ship cause a problem?

Thread: That little elf under the workbench again

Well a happy ending for me but before that a disaster, had another go with the magnet on a telescopic stick and lost the end under my milling machine!!

Good news, I found my 6BA socket, it had bounced up and was nestling in some old shirts under a bench I had stored ready for turning into wipers.

Brings me back to my recent post about websites, fortunately most of our ME suppliers have excellent sites, Macc is good example and they are a one man and his wife as far as I am aware so don't understand in this day and age why others seem to have a problem.

I am 79 and have embraced the www. enthusiastically since day one, I remember the day in business where to find a product you had to dig out your Kelly's or similar, have a stab at a few names, phone around and wait patiently for several days for a catalogue to arrive.

Thread: Covid

Absolutely agree with all the above, I keep saying I am going to stop watching the news but keep coming back for more. The fact is all these media people are just keeping themselves in a job. Never used to have much sympathy for politicians but I bet all the media people go home at night and secretly think thank god it's not me in that position, having all the armchair experts grill me on whatever decision I make. Many of these media people being very highly paid, probably more than ministers. Authority without responsibility and hundreds of grand a year to do it.

That's it for me now chaps now I've got that off my chest. Got too much to worry about getting my boiler finished (Emma Victoria) as in a recent article in ME mag, if I made another loco it wouldn't include the boiler!!

Stay safe

So now the PM and all the experts have said the AZ vaccine is ok, and shortages won't affect the roadmap the media will now shut up about it, right, no chance.

And I wish Boris would shut down those idiots that want to turn the Covid briefing into PM question time. My view of the media has plummeted over the last 12 months, the BBC in particular i must say.

In my job as Engineering Manager in industrial fans, I have a well know law (mine) if you do something to improve or cure a problem , it won't, If you change something for other reasons and say it won't make any difference, it will.
