Thread: Blocked Drain
21/02/2022 13:16:30

When working I was often required to clear drains. The biggest problem and the most frequent was fat. Wiping the frying pans and any fat into the bin before washing up and is the best option to prevent blockages.

Thread: Wind - trivia
17/02/2022 21:19:03

On the first of January 1976 a storm passed through lincolnshire and my barometer fell to 27 inches, the winds were bad and caused severe damage even breaking a telegraph pole in the builders yard in half.We stayed up until 2 in the morning incase the stack fell in,as it was I lost some heavy ridge tile which broke slates on the way down.Three houses at the top of the street were stripped of slates on one side.A local park lost 2000 trees.I met a RAF metorolist who was on duty when the 87 storm was imminent and he told me that they warned all bases to secure the aircraft as severe damage was likely,so the information given to Mr Fish was incorrect and his reported it as given.

I have been infeeding .4mm and reducing gradually as I get to depth.I have an SX3 which handles this alright, but I can't find any information on the correct way to use these cutters that is why I have asked the knowledgeable on the forum for advice.

I learned to tie knots and splice rope from the book that Niel mentioned and I still have it somewhere. When I was an apprentice, the lorry drivers on the firm would bring their ropes to me to splice the cut ends and also to make eye splices and I would whip them on completion.

Yesterday I cut the male dovetails on the shaper ram.The ram is 13" long and the cuts were just possible on the SX3 with little to spare. The female base for the ram needs a slot 11" * 1 1/2" in the centre to allow for the scotch crank to pass through and I have been chain drilling with a slot drill and hope to finish it tomorrow, it's tedious work.

I havn't a clue to it's use or how it works but where the fractions have +1 to 9 attached does one take the number and using the lower table add the corresponding number to the fraction. If this is correct it would be a guess.

Thread: shaper cross feed
13/01/2022 12:50:08

Thanks for your informed replies.Clive has answered what I required and is obvious once described. The shaper was 80% finished when I aqired it and the plans have written on them is practicalmachinist.com pootatuck metal shaper 1930.Made out of plate and well wellded.I think he couldn't make the drive gear to the skotch crank and pinion drive. As he has made the crank mechanism well and I can't get the machine under the mill to alter it as the plan,I have fitted a 100tooth gear on the crank shaft and fabricated a cage to carry a pinion and pullys bolted on with slotted adjustment to the bolts for depthing the gears. The motor and drive pullys will be hinged off the back of the shaper. The ramm was fishbellied and I could just get it on the mill to flatten it this made swivelling tool carrier out of square and the bore also. When the ram was having the top of the slide true I cut across the face of the ram to allow trueing on the lathe faceplate and allow me to true the bore. Now to the bearing slide which is alsobowed from welding I can't get it under the mill or to support it with the head horizontal,so a lot of scraping to come.Something I haven't seen before is he had inserted a strip of brass to both sides of the of the bearing with gib screws from below.

Just received my joint gas and electric bill ,they weren't wrong about price rises,it made my glass eye water. This might mean I will have to get up and use my machines on economy seven to keep the cost down.

Made three plug guages to fit a ball race a existing bored gear and a pulley so that I could get accurate readings when I make the arbour for all three. This is a part for the making of a shaper which I am trying to finish when the original maker died and left it 80% complete but with no idea of his thinking I am makeing the most of it.The plans are labled putnook but he never followed them completely which is making it difficult.

I was not pleased about being called but when I heard the details of the crime I was pleased when the judge sent the accused to prison for 12 years and I had played my part in the outcome.I'm 75 now and I am glad I won't have to do it again.

Thread: small shaper speeds
30/11/2021 20:08:43

I have taken on the building of an 80% completed shaper of a deceased friend.Unfortunatley he has made it from three different sorces and left no notes. The box containing the scotch crank has no room for the gearing inside and I think because he left a long shaft on the outside that he intended to fit pulleys.ai will fit a 100 tooth gear connected to a 20 tooth and on this shaft will be polley v belt pulleys 5" 3.5" 1.5" to the same on the 1420rpm motor this will give speeds of 85 284 946 Are these speeds acceptable or are they too fast.He has let brass into the steel box for the sliding holder to bare on is this acceptable. The shaper is roughly the size of the gingery shaper.

Jon I forgot to mention that the engines were serialised in the Engineering in Minature magazine starting in June 81 to January 87 and the construction was described in detail ,a real help for the construction.Try and get hold of these magazines.

Jon,

I will post it to you unless you live near Grantham Linc,s PM with your details .I built the single cylinder version as at the time I thought it would speed up the work.I bought all of the materials for the whole engine from the original suppliers and designers in Ringwood for around 400gbp.

Hi John,

A lovely engine to build with lots of small parts to make.I built mine over 29 years as family and work intervened over this time. When I was younger I wished that I had gone for a 3" engine but now I am pleased I didn't as this engine at around 90lb is enough to hump into the boot of a car.I have a wooden former for the tender if it is of use to you it's yours. The only thing that the ML7 can't handle is the rims of the back wheels ,but with the mill and a rotary table you can true them on it.I bought an old ward 2A just to do my wheels and sold it to a factory afterwards a nice machine but with a 5 horse single phase motor to quick on the clutch and the whole house was out ,I was pleased to get rid of it.Constructing the boiler can be an interesting task.On completion of the boiler I did a hydraulic test and it held fine and then the creaking began and My son who was 5 at the time said I can't pump it any more,it was at 300psi.

Hi James I too have had a problem on my SX3 and was not sure on the dismantling to get at the problem.I phoned Arc Euro Trade for advice and on their website is a full guide on dismantling and reassembly,I managed it easily and if I can most competant people can.I just oil my leadscrew from an oil can,I use hydraulic oil.
