Set the dividing head on packings to allow a 9" disc, mounted on a face plate to be gear cut .Only a segment of the disc was required as I need a curved rack,a result. Now for the pinion. Frank |
Thread: Cutting steel to size |
12/05/2019 23:57:10 |
A word of warning about the use of angle grinders for cutting steel.Ensure that you are clear of any glazed windows as the sparks weld themselves to the glass. In my working life this cost me money to replace double glazed units in a house. Frank |
Thread: Bore micrometer |
11/05/2019 18:53:24 |
I don't know wether one can buy commercial wedges that are used as folding wedges in the bore and then measured outside the bore with a micrometer.I made my own when boring a 1.5"cylinder,they worked well. Frank |

I don't think the lower lever is hand operated ,I think that lever is compressed on the bench and the handle levered down to hold the work.Have not got a clue as to it's use. Frank |

Thread: How do I cut 6" dia bar? |
06/05/2019 10:13:16 |
I have cut 5" bar in the same size saw and it took about 1.25 hrs .I had a 2" piece to split in half.I had read an article by Brian wood that gorrila glue would hold short ends attached to a piece of wood in the vice.I glued some wood together to make a 4"piece attached the bar with glue and clamped for 12hrs ,it held with no problem. To remove from the wood I used a wood saw and scraped off the glue residue.I have used this trick often. Thread: Myford raising blocks |
03/05/2019 16:10:33 |
offcuts of 4"*2" steel channel will serve just as well as paying for Myfords own.I just get offcuts at the local steel stockist and crossing the palm works wonders. Frank |
Thread: Myford S7 position |
02/05/2019 07:40:38 |
Hi Richard, The cover and the cross slide have no bearing on the distance requested it is the motor that dictates that.Mine is tight with 1/2" clearance at 13"1/4" measured off the back of the bed,so the figure you have from the manual is correct. Regards Frank |

When going to the schoolboys international at wembley we stopped in a park and had our sandwiches.A park keeper was brushing up leaves and he shouted to his mate we, have a gang of Lincolnshire yellow belleys. He must have served in bomber county to know the dialect that we then spoke, sadly it is dissapearing fast like all dialects which are usually spoken amongst manual workers who are nearly extinct. Thread: Using a propane cylinder for partable compressed air. |

Peter,I remember reading of this test in an old magazine and if I remember correctly it was a small hand held gas torch and I was amazed at the pressure reached before it exploded.I can,t remember the pressure. Frank I |
Thread: Strange Myford Motor Fault |
19/03/2019 19:37:13 |
Check that the gear that is housed in the mandrel pulley has not come loose as it is only glued in.It will not slip until under load.I had the problem of my motor cutting out and back in again and this happened under high speeds and I thought it was belt slip but I noticed that it wouldn't hold whilst changing chucks with the lock in the pulley.I stripped out the mandrel and after cleaning up the gear I reglued it with locktite. That fixed my problem.Just a thought. Thread: myford super 7 problem |
18/03/2019 20:04:00 |
I have a super 7 plus which had this problem. When I had it serviced by the two Myford fitters they couldn't suggest a cause. After crashing into the gearbox with my depth stop I wrecked my half nuts.I was lucky that I was able to buy new ones from a fellow member.Since fitting these the marks have disapeared so is this the possible cause of this threading affect ,it could have some swarf in the half nuts, just a thought. Thread: Beware new engine project! |
11/03/2019 19:15:45 |
I had the same problem with the head casting.I carried on and made the valves offcentre.I did ask on the forum if it would be ok and was told that it would work,so i was not too upset about it.The gears were another thing that would not work to the drawings as they were to big and when I queried this with the supplier was told they were what they provided and if I wanted the correct size I would have to find another supplier.I had to cut nearly through the side to allow the gears to keep to camshaft position.I like the engine but these known discrepancies should be addresed. When tanking was done the method my firm used was to concrete on top of the floor layer and brick line the walls to keep it in place. As for radon gas fortunes are now being made by companies manufacturing products to combat this. How do the powers that be come up with any proof of anyone contacting cancer ,houses have been built for decades on granite and limestone. I got my rockerblock i/c engine running. It fired continually with the drill but wouldn't run ,I thought I would run it on the drill to bed everything in,whilst doing this I noticed bubbles coming from a head screw.I removed all of the screws and spread hermatite on the screws and reffited them, after adjusting the jet to nearly closed it ran and continues at every start up.To say I am chuffed is an understatement.
