Thread: TiN coated twist drills
04/01/2020 07:35:12

When working I sometimes encountered wood screws that would not shift.I heated a thin rod and held it on the head a kept it red hot with a torch, the heat transfers to the screw and expands it.Left to cool and shrink they unscrewed.I have tried this in metal with success.

Thread: ring lights to mill and drill
09/12/2019 14:45:36

Having read Michael Cox's article in MEW No 287 I liked the idea and purchased from Auto Lights [no Connection] a pair of 100mm led's and I followed Micheals procedure of using 8mm MDF,this was fine for me as headroom is not an issue.I did not sink the magnets in the MDF as the article but glued them on the surface of the rings. My mill is a SX3 and a 100mm ring light is the maximum that can be accomodated.I do get a small shadow below the collet chuck, but this dose not bother me as I use a laser centre finder and I won't have to turn off the light to find the punch mark.A great immprovement on my two halogen lights which if not careful would melt the plastic ends of the spider. Thanks Michael.

Having built the engine three years ago I got it to fire but never run .Now I am trying again I am thinkinking of viton o rings instead of piston rings. The bore is 38.2mm and I have found an o ring from Bearing Boys of an outside diameter of 38.4-34.5 internal and2mm cross section.would this ring be the right size and would one ring be sufficient,If ok what would the size of the groove be.

Thread: Silver solder
16/11/2019 20:09:29

John, you will need high temerature solder for the start of your construction so as not to melt the parts that are internal as you continue with the rest ,with a lower temperature.Ask the supplier for advice.

I bought a set from Lidl's and find it useful for light cleaning up of drilled holes apart from it's main function.

Thread: What hand protection do you use?
04/09/2019 09:31:48

When my father worked on the railway as a fitter he used rozolex.I don,t know if it still availiable but he always had clean hands. For cracks I use Drapolene from Boots, it is for nappy rash, but none better for healing cracks and cuts.

Hi Chris ,A dowel pin in the side of the tool post with a locating hole in the tool cartridge would solve the repeatability and the location issue.I have a dixon type tool post and I find that my design is quicker and uncluttered on the top and this type of holder is more ridgid.

Frank

The advantage is that the tool cartridge is tight onto the topslide and gives ridgidity.I made a toolholder which is in my album which is based on the Pratt burnerd holder.Mine, one has to pack the tool in it's holder to centre height but once done your there and unlike this design the holder can be removed and replaced as before and cannot move in the toolpost.I like the toolpost Chris.

Thread: Angle grinders - Dangerous or not
19/07/2019 17:46:29

Having been cutting brickwork I lowered the saw and the slowing blade touched my wrist.A strand off the disc had entered my skin and made a complete circle under the skin.I pulled it out with pliers,it was painful and I realised how close it had come to my artery,I have shown more respect for them since.
