Thread: MEW for Beginners
21/02/2011 21:17:33
Maybe it would be helpful if everyone who contributes to this site if they created a public profile and as a minimum gave some indication as to which part of the country they reside in.
I have made contact with a number of members in my local area but I am sure there are many more.
Creating a public profile does not 'expose' any more than you are willing to reveal however, it does give an insight into who you are and where you are, both geographically and in your ME experience.

Thread: Printing from the archives
11/02/2011 21:40:49
Since the change in the magazine viewer, the ability to print multiple pages has been removed (despite the fact that the underlying application has this ability)
There is an application called PDF creator which acts as a printer device and allows you to add multiple pages to a queue and then combine them into one PDF document.
Download from here http://www.pdfforge.org/

Thread: Digital Issues
06/02/2011 23:22:30
Ok, so after re-loading the website, I now have access to ME from issue 4153 onwards. I still await confirmation that my digitial subscription to MEW will be refunded as I no longer need to have a separate digital MEW subscription.

Hi There
Digital subscription has just changed; paper subscribers get access to all digital issues now.
regards David
So, does this mean I will receive a refund on my digital issue subs to MEW and that also my account will be updated to allow access to the ME archive, to which I currently have no access

Hi There
Paper subscribers should have access to all issues.
Is this Correct? I subscribe to paper issues of both ME and MEW, but I only get access to the MEW full archive through a separate subscription

Just checked the archive and all issues now appear to be available, guess there was an issue with the webserver for a while
05/02/2011 17:01:28
The articles you seek are in issues 148 - 152
05/02/2011 16:59:44
No,you are not imagining it, those issues are definitely missing from the archive, and I am quite certain they used to exist.

Mabye David or Diane can shed some light on this gaping hole in the archive
Thread: Square peg in a square hole

I think the best way to go for this is with an EDM machine. There are many designs out there ranging from the simple to the ludicrously complex.

Another solution is to use a slotting device in your lathe, Hemingway do a kit for such a device and with a little ingenuilty one could be produced without castings.
Thread: HTS Bolts
03/02/2011 23:33:48
I think we are all getting too bogged down with the theory of metallurgy. I have, for many years, made Tee nuts out of MS and used common all thread rod with off the shelf nuts. I have never had a vice or fixture move or lose registration. I use an ndustrial turret mill (Ajax AJT4) and have never experienced any issues wiith movement.
If registration is an issue, then as I have done with my precision vice, set it up as required, then machine a registration keyway and add an alignment bar to the underside of the vice, that way you will ensure correct and accurate registration each time the vice is fitted to the table. Using this method, my precision vice is within 0001" every time

Thread: Crawler tractors, any published designs?

Hi Alan, to add pictures, you first need to create a photo album, once you upload your photos, you can then add them to your posts or add a link to them
Thread: Oil change in a Chester MF42B
29/01/2011 13:53:14
I owned one of these some time ago, from what I recall, there is an oil drain behind one of the gears on the back of the headstock, it is also worth removing the plate at the rear of the headstock where the oil filler plug is as some old oil will remain in the bottom of the sump,
Thread: Different Steels

BS 970 has been generally superseded by European based standards – where will it all end?

BS970 Numbering system explained

The BS970 code number is constructed as follows;

a) The first three symbols are a number code indicating the type of steel:

000 to 199 Carbon and carbon-manganese steels. The number represents the manganese content x 100

200 to 240 Free cutting steels. The second and third number indicate the sulphur content x 100

250 Silicon Manganese valve steels

300 to 499 Stainless and heat resisting steels

500 to 999 Alloy Steels

b) The fourth symbol is a letter code .

A The steel is supplied to a chemical compostion determine by analysis of the batch sample.

H The steel is supplied to a hardenability specification

M The steel is supplied to a Mechanical Property specification.

S The steel is a stainless steel

c) The fifth and sixth symbol is a number is the actual mean carbon content x 100

In addition to the above coding a condition coding may be applied. indicating the tensile strength range after heat treatment. This is used in conjunction with a limiting section designation.

So that makes it all crystal clear doesn’t it

Thread: bypass v globe valves
28/01/2011 21:50:02
A globe valve is more suited to fluid flow regulation than other valve designs. Globe valves generally have a tapered seat deisgn, the fluid flow is directed downwards onto the valve plug and exits from the seat downwards, This type of valve is most suited to flow regulation.
Another valve design which is generally used where a full bypass is required is a parallel gate valve, these are not suited to fluid flow regulation as when partially closed, the point of wear between the seat and the gate eventually causes leakage.
There are a couple of images in my valves album that illustrate the difference between these two designs.

Thread: Toolpost Grinding
27/01/2011 11:03:13
I am in the process of designing and building a toolpost grinder and was wondering what the opinion is on the direction of rotation of workpiece to grinding wheel.
Some documentation I have found shows it as below however, others state that the work should rotate in the opposite direction to that shown

Thread: Metric or Imperial, Fractions or Decimals
19/01/2011 22:00:57
Personally, I have no preference, having been brought up with imperial measurements, I tend to use those predominantly however, if a drawing is dimensioned in metric measurements it would not deter me from using those drawings.
Produce the drawings in whatever units YOU are most comfortable with. If need be, most engineers can convert from one to another

Thread: centring for gear cutting
19/01/2011 17:03:44
One way to achieve this, measure the thickness of the gear cutter at the cutting tip, then using a center height gauge set one face of the cutter (top or bottom) at center height, using a DTI or the mill vertical DRO, move the cutter in the appropriate direction, half the thickness of the cutter tooth. This will set the centre of the cutter tooth at exactly centre height.
It may sound a little long winded but I have used this method many times with excellent results.
Thread: Magazine on time

I received my replacement 4393 today - thank you subscriptions and I've also received 4394 although somewhat late.
4395? - well there's still another 4 days to publication date so I'm not holding my breath for an early delivery yet, based on deliveries over the last 6 month here in Hampshire, it will probably turn up on 15th. I've given up complaining as it doesn't seem to get me anywhere.

New Years resolution - leave the soapbox in the cupboard and get on with building engines

Thread: M.E. Magazine Delivey Issue 4394
05/01/2011 17:06:09
I checked with subscriptions as I have not received ME 4393 or 4394. They have confirmed that both issues were sent out on time so I can only assume that they are lost in the backlog somewhere. Meantime, they have requested replacement copies to be sent out.
