Thread: lathe cutting fluid.

I usually use castrol hysol "white water" for turning & only mix small amounts & apply with an oil can so doesn't get time to smell[like it used to when I had it in the sump & pumped it] & about 20 yrs ago I bought 5 gallons of rocol rtd for a few quid [shared it with all my mates] downside was it was the heavy type so I just mix it with a little white spirit to make it runny for the oil can,

Thread: Bandsaw blades

I wrote ***THIS*** article for MEW about soldering bandsaw blades a few years ago.

Hi Gary, thanks for the details of your jig, as I said I made one years ago,I like yours better as you can awivel the clamps to apply a little tension to keep the blades tight together, also like the" angle grinding attatchment," even though I have the wadkin I'm going to make one like yours.

Yes Wadkin did make or just supply a band saw blade brazer, for their large band saws, we had one at work. If a centre needed to be cut out in a large piece of wood, the machinists cut the blade, poked the blade through the hole, which had already been bored in the wood, then brazed the blade up again and carried on working. I silver solder blades as outful doger does above. Not always successful, but one can use up odd parts of blades that way.

Interesting John, your the only person that I've spoken to thats heard about the wadkin brazer,I picked mine up from rufforth autojumble near york years ago.

I've a home made jig & silver solder the scarfed joint first flattening a piece of silver solder on the anvil then placing it in between the ends with wet flux & using a sievert torch with a small burner, never found the need to anneal or line up the teeth, works every time,I was at an autujumble & picked up a genuine wadkin bursgreen brazer, electric, with clamps etc quite a heavy cast device, nice to use but no better than my home made one, just a bit more nice & convenient to use, never ever seen one before or since but if wadkin made a brazing machine it must be ok to braze blades.

Just a quick one, there's a place not far from me called Ingleby Barwick which the newcomers insist it's pronounced like that [makes the place sound better] but all the kids from there I went to school with in yarm called it ingleby barrick after all you wouldn't say berwick on tweed you'd say berrick on tweed,& the wynds in yarm are pronounced weend if your from yarm of course the newcomers who say wynd tell you your wrong [I'm 4th generation & all said weend, it's wynd in darlington, & chop gate which is local & farmers from there I know call it that but they say it's the townies that call it chop yat!!

I've always known it to be pronounced cladding even for the large company I worked for always said cladding, another one is Gib or is it jib? & we always say thrasher where I live [the missus comes from a long line of farming stock! ]some may say thresher, suppose it all depends on where you come from.

Thread: water supply
18/06/2019 18:56:11

Where I live in north yorkshire we get our water from keilder & we've never had a hosepipe ban,I have a large veg garden & have storage tanks on the house, workshop, barn & garage, about 800 gallons & we're on a meter as only the 2 of us,the last thing I want to do is pay for water for the garden, when you pay your water bill the sewerage rate is based on water used so I suppose "technicnally" if you use rainwater to flush the toilet your actually fiddling them.

Thread: Folding Bike design & build
09/04/2019 20:43:24

Well done Alan nice looking cycle, looks like we've got another Dr David Hon in our mists, he spent 7 yrs developing a folding bicycle in his garage & took his design to leading manufacturers who wern't interested, so with his brother he started his own company,[dahon] they are now the largest folding bike manufacturers in the world, I have a dahon cadenza, it has 8 hub gear speeds [none of the exposed derailleur gears & sprockets to gather dirt & salt,] a stainless steel chain disk brakes & full size wheels, a beautifull bike.

Thread: Using a propane cylinder for partable compressed air.
05/04/2019 18:08:51

Having watched the various posts with intrest I might ad my little bit, I borrowed my brothers home made gas bottle storage tank, much the same as glyn's & I must say it's very usefull & works a treat,he also uses it to blow tyres up, when away from the compressor,I used it with a blow gun in the foundry for blowing loose sand away as the compressors are not worth starting up especially @ 2-3 psi.he filled it full of water for a few days then fitted it up with fittings,[I'm going to make my own] my large teclamit compressor only gets used for sand blasting everything else I use my home made gas bottle tank with a green godess twin cylinder air brake pump & 2.5 hp motor & the usual fittings/safety valve, regulator/moisture seperator & drain valve,it's chiseled every bit of plaster from our 17c cottage sprayed numerous cars,& scores of everyday workshop jobs,as for dangerous hydrocarbons leaching from the walls,& exploding etc all I can say is I'm still here & i built it nearly 50 yrs ago,the only time it failed was when the oil pump got a bit of dirt in the non return valve & 1 big end melted I then made a jig & re-white metalled it & bored it on the faceplate & blued & scraped it in 30 yrs ago & its still going strong.

Thread: Model Engineer Societies in North Yorkshire
31/03/2019 19:38:57

Hi Cliff, the two closest to you would be pickering model engineering club [PEEMS] and rydale club at gilling east, further afield there's south durham based in hurworth grange, teesside small guage railway base in preston park near stockton or cleveland association of model engineers based in the grounds of darlington pumping station, the club i'm in [northern road locomotive society] only caters mainly for road locos & we don't have grounds, hopes this helps.

Thread: Strange Myford Motor Fault
19/03/2019 22:55:18

Neil a 1/3 hp motor is too small for a super 7 it should be a 3/4 hp, there's nothing wrong with the dewhirst switches if they're used correctly, the problem arises when people use them to start & stop the lathe thus arcing the contacts instead of using it to put in forward/reverse first & then starting the lathe with the push button contactor,i've had mine for over 30 yrs with no problems at all, never even needed to clean the contacts.

Ian, there are 3 locally, as above cleveland which is based in darlington pumping station, south Durham which is in hurworth grange [I was chairman there a long time ago] and one in preston park, teesside small guage railway, there was one in albert park middlesbrough where I was a member it was a really good club but now sadly gone a lot of yrs ago,it went downhill when north yorks moors railway started & lost lots of members, I only live in north yorks a few miles from stockton.

Thread: Colchester Student Lathe Help

Hi Steve, the 10" four jaw weighs the most, the 8" three jaw is lighter [but both quite heavy] I just have a piece of wood across the bed, the spindle nose is LOO taper with a key in it so after making sure everything is scrupiously clean & lightly oiled I have the key at the top & with the chuck on the timber it slides up the taper & is held on with a threaded ring [well I manage & I'm in my 70s!!!

Stephen ,as Nick says there is only 1 lever under the apron [apron has 2 slots] lh one is for facing & the rh one is for sliding, I rarely use the facing slot, the later ones have only 1 lever, quite a lot didn't have a clutch [mine included it came out of ICI Wilton training school] there was a clutch made by matrix as an extra, I just hinged the motor platform with a balanced lever mechanism & it works a treat as a clutch but mines a flat belt drive which is better than vee belts, someone on a forum told me it was dangerous as it could catch & drive when your measuring in the chuck well mine never has & the absolute safe answer is to just flick the high/low gear lever in the middle till your ready to start again,I had an edgewick lathe that was built with the hinged platform clutch & it never caught up.
