Muzzer:

Your motorised trike is somewhat reminiscent of my (more recently completed) Speedy.

Thread: Quick change tooling

Tractor man:

Many thanks for taking the trouble to describe and illustrate the Arrand tooling.

My impression is that few of these were sold by the maker on account of the perceived high price and that fewer still are sold on by users because of their real worth. As to the difficulty of making, have you considered whether the individual carriers are too demanding for the ME to reproduce as opposed to the lever-operated holder which fits in the tailstock?

For many purposes this arrangement seems better than a tailstock turret.

Michael Gilligan:

"Breech Lock arrangement" - the lever does rather suggest this. Where's Ruby Loftus when you need her?

There is something to be said for using genuine cartridges for the warranty period.

Tractor man:

Thanks for the photos. I, too, would like to know the working principle of the Arrand tailstock tooling. Did it come with any drawings that you could share?

John Alexander Stewart:

Thanks for the Lubuntu tip. I will try it on my old netbook which is now rather slow under Ubuntu.

Is your Canon a current model? And are all its features supported?

I have found that an otherwise OK printer can become less useful when there is no dedicated driver for the latest OS and you are limited to the in-OS driver with much reduced capability.

Marlon Brando had his slung over his shoulder in On the Waterfront.

I agree it's similar to the hooks used in mills for handlng sacks but they have a sharper hook. The other end seems to be a screwdriver blade.

Might it be possible as a temporary workaround to rewire the switch so that reverse gives forward?

Thread: Metric lead screw on a Myford Super 7
25/01/2016 11:15:56

I see that Michael Gilligan's 10 has top slide and cross slide feedscrews threaded 3/8" x 2mm pitch to go with its hybrid leadscrew.

Also interesting that John Caines' handwheel has intermediate markings which omit the leading zero eg ".2". Is this normal practice for metric leadscrew handles?

Thread: Boring Bars.

Further down the Dorian document is a better view of their favoured split collar. A refinement on this was used by GHT as seen on the left in my photo ie a small stress- relieving hole; the other holder is a simpler version without the eccentric bush seen on the left. Proponents of other methods sometimes ask what the standard flats on the bar are for, if not for clamping? The flats do facilitate other methods but in my case the top flat just serves as a reference to the correct radial positioning of the bar in the holder; I have added a cross hole in the smaller bar which takes a tommy/sighting bar for setting the position.

Thanks to KWIL and tractionengine42.

The Dorian document seems to be particularly to do with deep holes but, FWIW, I agree with the latter's comments.

Interesting, but what is the source of the posted material, please?

Thread: RF-25 Belt-sizes and Table Stop Info Please
23/01/2016 14:32:12

Vic:

My stops have shortened ratchet handles; tool-free but the handles sometimes clash and require re-setting.

BTW, my X axis tee slot doubles as a mounting for a digital scale.

23/01/2016 11:39:06

Slightly OT:

I wonder if there is anyone who, like me, has one of the early machines without a dovetail or tee slot for table stops? I put up with this for years until it occurred to me that I could fasten some extruded tee slot section to the table. This worked so well that I did the same for the Y axis.

As always, I could post a photo or two if this would be of interest.

Thread: Metabo hand operated drill

I bought one of their Futuro keyless chucks some years ago and find it excellent; somewhat to my surprise it does not claim to be made in Germany.

Thread: Old lathes
21/01/2016 17:45:12

Neil Wyatt:

Thank you. Your example is apparently from the 1920s but I see that Tony Griffiths is also illustrating an 1898 machine with treadle and gear box. Men were men in those days!

lathes.co.uk is a wonderful resource and I have sometimes wished it had more refined search capabilities eg "showing" it a photo of an unknown lathe with a view to identifying it.

Were there any treadle lathes with screwcutting gearboxes?

Thread: Myford DRO and Taper Turning attachment

Michael Gilligan and Brian Wood:

Thanks to both. The DRO and taper turning attachment are a marriage made in heaven!
