Thread: Outstanding Service
27/02/2013 16:43:41

I placed an order (from Canada) on Chronos recently it was on the weekend and I received an email on the following Monday to tell me that the website had screwed up the shipping calculation. They apologised profusely for the time lost (a day or so .... it really didn't bother me) and I accepted the new (higher) charge.

I was then surprised that the parcel showed up a day or two later by Fedex (previous orders have always come by mail). I can only assume that they were so mortified by the minor delay caused by the site problem that they decided to expedite the parcel.

This was very nice of them and I truly appreciate the thought .....but ..... I wish they had said. I'd have asked them not to, knowing that the Fedex delivery would (and did) arrive together with a healthy Fedex/Customs bill which swamped the cost of the goods (regular mail at that value comes straight through).

Basically though, it was good service - I just have to be a little more careful in future.

Thread: eBAY - Shill Bidding

I always use option 2. I lose more than I win but thats OK. Option 3 breaks ebay rules but I have done some deals with the seller when going to view an item before. If they want to break the rules thats up to them.

It's within the rules actually if there are no existing bids on the item.

It's also within the rules (whether or not there are existing bids) if the seller is forced to withdraw because of circumstances beyond his control (e.g. lost in a fire, lost in a burglary, dog ate it, late discovery that goods were not as described etc). Of course you can drive a truck (or lorry) through this loophole.

Not to belabour the point (.... well, OK, to belabour the point):

Why not $17.90 or £17.90 ?

(Unless of course you also given to writing 1 inch and 125 thou for consistency)

Then press print screen.

Paste this into a paint program as a new image and then you can print it out.

But the resolution would be terrible - on a modern monitor - maybe 96 dpi. Even a picture image is rubbish below ~150 dpi for printing (and pushing it at that). For text, I wouldn't bother.

Thread: Updating a PC and software to Windows 8

I suppose I should spend more time at this new PC familiarising myself with the operating system but I prefer banging metal than tapping keys

Oh, I agree with you. One of the most frustrating things about Microsoft is that at each new Windows release they seem to delight in hiding away all the stuff you need to access in different places. Probably to make it look new rather than just old-stuff warmed-over.

I don't want to waste my time re-learnng everything every time Microsoft wants me to.

I am still mourning the inability to have two windows of the XP file manager open at the same time - it was so easy then to drag and drop files from one window to another, I thought XP was/is the business

You've lost me on two counts, Stuart. We're talking about XP now, not Win-8?

Either way (XP or Win-8) I don't understand what you mean that you can't have two file manager (file explorer?) windows open at the same time to drag/drop files between them. Of course you can do that - in every version of windows. I don't see how you could function without it.

If you mean that, with one window open, you click on a folder and that folder opens in the same window (losing you the first). Their are two solutions:

- either, configure Windows to open new instances in a separate window (instead of the same window) .... can't recall offhand where the setting is but can dig it out if you want.

- or, hold down the control key when you click on the folder and it will open in a separate window and you can drag/drop between it and the first window.

(I prefer the second method, the first can rapidly get very messy).

Or am I totally misunderstanding?

Hi David,

Hard for me to tell on the speed. It is much faster but then the machine that I built and installed it on is also much faster than the previous one

The load/shutdown speed improvement is because of the vaunted "Fast Boot". Just a form of hibernation actually where they save a mchine-state image on shutdown and reload it when you boot.

I've actually had to turn that off on mine since I use a boot-manager and it can lead to data corruption. I haven't actually noticed a great deal of difference in the boot time but then I don't have it very highly loaded yet.

Please note that in my opinion, this OS is proving so unpopular ....

I realise you said that it's your opinion but I'm curious, do you have any actual evidence for that view being more widespread?

I'm not known for liking new Windows versions (the all time best imo was win2K - I've just recently - and reluctantly moved to XP). However, I'm Like David, I'm finding Win8 quite a bit better that Win7 and miles better than Vista (of course). (I did install the Classic Shell as soon as I installed the OS).

I also think that HP machines are not the best way to judge a new OS if they are still (over)loading them with their usual junk.

Thread: Where can I get very small (2.5mm) precision shim washers
26/01/2013 01:18:12

One thing you might want to keep an eye out for - for this and in a general sense - is laminated shim washers. They're punched from (not surprisingly) laminated material, usually brass or corrosion-resistant steel with, usually, .002" laminations.

You then peel layers off them to get them to a suitable thickness to shim your bearing or whatever. They are used a lot by manufacturers of precision mechanisms. harder to find than they used to be but worth their weight in gold when you do.

Thread: Updating a PC and software to Windows 8
23/01/2013 16:24:50

You mean my latest turn through the cycle:

- update hardware to the latest in all-singing, all-dancing fast components
- update to latest version of Windows
- latest version of Windows is so sluggish it robs 90% of the hardware performance gain

..... is actually going to work for me this time? smiley

22/01/2013 21:53:15

Thanks, David. I downloaded that version and I'll give it a try

22/01/2013 18:25:36

Hi David,

Out of interest, which version of 7 did you use. Mine is 7.0.0.16 but on checking, I notice that Qualcomm did actually release a version 7.1.

I tried the latest version, not 7.

I guess that's the open-source version after Qualcomm quit? I looked at that a fair time ago and decided that it was getting a bit "Linux-like" for me and trying to be all things to all people, so I stuck at 7. Let us know how you get on with 7.

What actual problem did you have with the latest version ..... did it simply not install?

Qualcomm put Eudora in the public domain when they dropped it but as far as I 'm aware (I'd love to be proved wrong) before doing so, never did release a version that didn't need a code to get you out of the shareware version (with ads). I had a code at one time - heaven knows where now - but it just writes an ecrypted section in the config file so when I re-install I just copy the old config file over (which saves doing the whole setup thing again anyway)

Posted by David Clark 1 on 22/01/2013 10:56:55:

I have always used Eudora for email but it does not appear to work on 8 even in compatible mode.

Update: I just booted up the Win-8 machine and ran a Eudora (7.0.0.16) installation and there appeared to be no problem at all. Once installed, I only ran it up to the opening screen (didn't go through any setup since I'll transfer the config file from the old machine eventually) but up to there it worked normally.

What exact problem are you having?

I'm with you all the way on that one. I've used Eudora continuously since 1996. I've tried Outlook, OE, Thunderbird (which I use for newsgroups) and several others along the way. None of them have the flexibility to do things my way that Eudora does. And I don't recall there ever being an exploit aimed at Eudora (too small an installed base probably).

Please keep us informed on your efforts. I have a new, fast system that I've built and installed Win-8 on via the special offer. I'm just waiting to get a round tuit to load it up with my user programs before I replace my current machine with it. If I can't use Eudora I might just have to go back to XP on that machine.

I looked at upgrading from 7, but started finding reviews that said the user interface had gone all tablety, and desktop was hidden.

You can get back close to the classic interface with Windows-8 (and Windows-7) by installing this

Gets rid of that ugly front-end touch screen (I would have thought using atouch-screen on a desktop would give you serious arm-ache) and cleans up a lot more besides.
