Thread: TIG welding sets
30/10/2009 21:53:32
Gents, may I point you to this site.
Lots of info here. Mig is 'easier' to do but a good looking weld may be useless, as opposed to MMA where generally if it looks good it is.
If you have gas experience TIG is easier to learn and produces very high quality welds but takes practice (no I still can't TIG properly) Beware of some units, AC/DC jobs can be had for £1K but please check the aftersales backup first.

Thread: Diamomd tool holder
26/09/2009 14:18:57
Well I've just tried it and I am impressed! It does exactly what it says on the tin.
Even on an old unknown piece of mild steel I swivelled the toolholder around so there was very little clearance, almost rubbing, and at 300rpm produced powder like swarf and an almost mirror finish.
Worth it I reckon.

Can't wait to try it now.

Thread: End mills in a drill chuck
24/09/2009 17:17:32
Hi Chris,
I had written a long prose on this and then reread your thread and decided to delete it as I would only be copying what you have already written.
I use a posilock chuck for threaded cutters, 3MT collets,ER chuck etc but if you are not taking a 1/4" cut off some mild steel so be it.
My first attempt at milling was with a straight shank 3 flute cutter in a drill chuck at 300RPM on mild steel with a 5 thou facing cut! Wasn't a problem.
If you are taking cuts that amount to less force than using a drill bit I can't see a problem (referring to the endmill in the tailstock).
Now sideways pressure, that's a different subject.........

I want some octagonal inserts for a Maydown  100mm 7 tip facing cutter and they're proving difficult to source. Anyone any ideas please?

Ian, try phoning Greenwood Tools, they've always been able to find inserts that I've needed.

Hi There
These should be easy to obtain from your local engineers supplies company.

If anyone has some octagonal inserts for a Mitsubishi cutter, I would like 4 of them.
I don't want to pay new price.
regards David

David,
I have a Mitsubishi facemill that takes octagonal inserts & some spare inserts knocking about. I'll check to see what type the cutter is and the type of insert and post again later.

Meyrick, was that from Allendale (Machine DRO) by any chance?
They are one of the suppliers I've been looking at.

As it happens I'm now looking at fitting a 2 axis system to my mill. I have an Ortec Z axis display at the moment but that company seems to have disappeared! I seem to remember having seen them advertising fairly (?) recently.
Anyone know if they are still in existance?

Thread: Milling Machine Low Speed Torque

I once accidently ran a fly cutter at a far greater than recommended speed only to find that the finish was excellent and that the cutter hadn't suffered and was as sharp as before.
Consequently I run them now at two or three times the accepted rate, as long as the toolsteel is Cobalt  HSS and the cuts are light I don't have any problems (apart from the chips flying off all over the place!)

Well at last third time lucky!
Finally managed to fit the rack feed, seems to be the thread on the body of the feed isn't quite square to the face so a little shimming was needed (easy fix but took ages to achieve).
Very pleased with the result, drilling, reaming and especially tapping is now so much easier.

Thread: lathe tool cutting oils

I've always used a neat cutting fluid which I originally got from Tilgear but would appear to be the same as the one from Chronos. Never had any problems with tipped tooling but I generally brush the work liberally with fluid beforehand and leave it at that. (Does produce quite a lot of smoke as it heats up, smells good though!)
Thread: Marking out

Ahh yes, killed spirits.
My grandfather was a plumber and used to buy hydrochloric acid in carbouys. My job on a Saturday as a 7 year old was to sit in front of a bucket of HCL with a pair of tinsnips and a sheet of zinc making the stuff!
Every now and then he'd pass by with a lighter and ignite the hydrogen!
I think Mr Elfin Safety might frown upon this these days.

Thread: Mitsubishi Octamill
24/05/2009 15:50:35
Hi David,
I have a 50mm Mitsubishi Octacut face mill (OCTACUT0504ARB) which, strangely enough, uses octagonal inserts. My inserts have a code of OEMX12T3ETR1-JS in grade F620 however. I got mine from Peter at Greenwood Tools who is able to get just about anything.
