Thread: ME Magazine 2nd Sept 2016 no. 4542
02/12/2016 17:13:21

This is very encouraging - thank you for all those who have replied. I have now been offered a subscription extension, for which I am grateful, but was not informed of what had happened to the areas mentioned above - I am just outside Dorset.. I will contact Diane accordingly.

Has anyone else not received their copy of this no. of ME ? Mine failed to arrive and on speaking to MyTimeMedia was curtly told that not enough copies had been printed. I take out a regular subscription and expect it to be honoured and so have been left with a gap in my collection. If there are enough peple left short the company must print more and send them out, easy enough these days with electronic printing facilities. Look forward to hearing if I'm the only one !!

Thread: Paint thinners
13/01/2016 13:34:13

Thanks Trevor, Martin and John. I've got some lighter fluid and I know it's recommended for use with certain lining pens so I'll give it a go on a small sample. Paint has become so complicated. There was a time when boiled linseed oil, proper turpentine and lead oxide was all things to all paint surfaces, but alas the little children chewed the window ledge because the linseed oil was tasty and then died ! One needs a higher degree nowadays to find your way through it all.

Thanks Russell, I'll have a sniff !

Is there any thinner that works well with Precision Paints enamels other than their own for brushing ? White spirit works for brush cleaning but I don't want to add it to the paint if it's not suitable. I only need a very small quantity.

At last, an explanation without any mathematics, none of which helps anyway when the darned things just won't work.

Thread: McConie's Oscillating Engine
22/06/2015 10:07:38

Jason. Thanks for ypur

Jason. Thanks for your reply. Sorry for the late acknowledgement but it took days to appear. The Model engine website looks really interesting and I will follow up your links. Still emerging from a massive house move including disposal of all the equipment from blacksmithing business, all very chaotic.

Regards, Mike.

Has anyone completed Anthony Mount's McConie's Oscillating Engine? I can't get past the machining of the side frames as the castings supplied don't match the drawings. Help through the whole project would be much appreciated.

Does anyone know if the Westland and Yeovil Model Engineers still exist. Internet searches have proved fruitless. Mike.

Thread: Shed for a workshop - any advice?
27/03/2014 07:58:14

Insulate, insulate, insulate, and then have a humidity-settable dehumidifier running all the time (very low cost), and you will have no rust problems. If you can afford to heat, then keeping the workshop above ambient is the best way with a back-up heater to make things comfortable. MIke

Thread: wire- plain , not galvanised, where to obtain ?.
27/03/2014 07:49:29

Google soft iron binding wire, that's the way I found some but I've forgotten from where. MIke

Thread: Mechanical Marvels

The writing boy was stunning, how on earth did he work out the forms of all those cams. Too much presenter's face is an unavoidable nuisance these days, but the content was fascinating.

Thread: Emco FB2

Hi Kev. Can I take it that you will not be doing these nuts and screws in imperial sizes ? For me it would be a matter of having them as a stand-by against future wear.

I have two FB 2's. One has given no trouble over several years of use in building a loco. The other came with enormous backlash on the y-axis. After several fruitless attempts to sort the problem by tightening the nut, I took the slide off and discovered that the nut was loose. I tightened the securing bolts, re-assembled and have had not trouble since with virtually no backlash. Whether this situation will last over future years of use remains to be seen. I hope so as the cost of replacements is eyewatering !

Thread: Silver Soldering - reheating.
12/04/2013 08:46:50

Silver solders alloy with the base metal enough to raise the re-melt temperature by a small amount. One-shot soldering is best if you can be sure the parts won't move during the operation, but reheats won't affect the joints already made so long as they don't melt and accidentally move ! Mike.

Thread: Degreaser
12/04/2013 08:41:47

Cellulose thinner is the best degreaser by far, leaving a clean and dry surface, I use it all the time. Sticky tapes stick fast after it's use. Obtainable fron your local motor factor. BEWARE - highly flamable with low flashpoint. Mike.

Thread: Plating solid lubricants on highly stressed parts
15/02/2013 09:38:53

Have you tried motor cycle chain oil, or chain saw chain oil ? They are both formulated to stick to the chain and resist being thrown off. Mike.
