As you are no doubt aware Michael, in injection moulding, swirl is induced into the plastic so linear orientation cannot be guaranteed. Linear alignment is controlled by either extrusion with long strands or lamination of a woven matt. Problem with GRP mouldings is that if the outer surface is damaged, exposing the strand fibres, they become carriers of water along their surfaces leading to delamination. doesn't apply with GFN as the fibres are so small.

Don't forget, if it is GFN, the filler is GLASS. Invariably the filler is randomly oriented and glass tends to be harder than adjacent materials so scratching occurs. If not filled, the moulded faces of Nylon would exhibit better wear properties than a 'machined' surface.

Looks like Steve is getting what used to be called a 'Short' engine albeit not rebuilt with a mileage already built in. Hope it's had a good flush out and the belts replaced?

The trust we built up with the local small garage to do routine maintenance has been nullified by Manufacturers get out clauses allowing main agents to rip us off at every opportunity.

Fords technical department reps visited our company once to give us a talk on FMA. (Failure Mode Analysis). Example they showed was what was likely to happen if the pin, which operated in the scroll of a steering assembly, welded to the operating quadrant came off due to bad welding. DOH!

Seems like their own designers haven't pulled that one out of the filing cabinet.

Nice one Maurice, a true artisan. Don't forget the dividers (sharpened) for accuracy.

If you want to machine to RR accuracy you're going to have to fit DROs .

Rotabroach and Starret hole saws, gee, you guys have it easy. Trepanning was the method of choice when making ring gauges in 1/4" Gauge plate where I worked as an apprentice and NO Carbides with everything. SO HSS for M/S is a doddle.

+1 with hollowpoint, any sort of Brass would be preferable to Aluminininium. Even the original GFN wasn't a really good choice but cost/value comes into the equation and despite the EMCO name, it's not a heavy duty turning machine, the later versions of the original, built to a price.

Thread: Freesat recorder HDD

Reported on this a while ago, mine was a 500G Seagate in a 'Humax Freesat 1100S. Prices ranged from about £40 to £15, both for new units and again on this site (M E) was advised to go for a 'Blue badge' grade, these seem to be for CCTV recorders. Mine came as this without asking. It's a SATA drive, so only one connection.

Easy job, but make sure you 'Discharge' yourself before doing it.

Powdered ink mixed in an ink 'Kettle' slopped out by the 'Honoured' ink monitor at primary skool. Can't remember this at Grammar school where lever filled fountain pens were the weapon of choice, 'Platignum' rings a bell, couple of years later the ink 'capsule' pens arrived. As a 'cack hander', had to be extra careful due to the 'smudge' inspection carried out at random times.

The mini glass milk bottles were delivered to the Woodwork department (?) must have been a space thing. every morning and the first class were responsible for allocating the correct number of bottles in the metal crates for each class in the school, collected at 9.45 by two pupils from each class for the 10am slurp, the crated empties being returned at 10.15.

Oh happy days.

While being taught how to wrangle AutoCad thirty years ago (after twenty years with a graphite stick), Instructor advised doing a 'Save file' every ten minutes. Still miss out now and again and it's a little bit vexing when a few hours work go down the pan.

And yet another Dinosaur too. How can you have faith in a system that takes into account (bad pun) an allowance for electronic fraud? Seems that just like 'Sloths' updates, we are assumed to treat it with blind acceptance.

Sorry Duncan, thought I'd made it clear re the 'Live' end. When I converted the eldests' tubes in his workshop, the gubbins were stripped out and I made sure he knew about which way round the blubs had to be fitted. I had a twin 8ft fitting in my kitchen and was going to cut the batten holder down to suit the two 5ft replacement tubes, (Yorkshire cost saving trait) but capitulated and bought a new twin batten with the tubes. There are stickies on the ends of the unit 'Live' at one end and 'Dummy' at t'other.

Why do flies favour the 'Live' end to cr*p on???

And if you're (correct spulling) going to use re-cycled tubular light fittings for LED tubes, read posting regarding these.

Just read an interesting post on another forum. For those changing to 'Lower wattage' tubular LEDs , the practice of substituting the starter with a 'Dummy' is NOT going to cut your bills when using an original fitting, the Choke and capacitor still draw current.

It doesn't take too long to strip the guts out of a fitting and connect the mains to ONE end fitting, LED tubes are fed from only one end (normally clearly marked) so the wires on the 'dead' end can be chopped off, it's only there to support the tube.

'Twould appear , one tube supplier has had to modify their sales blurb Twice due to this 'Error'
