Thread: lathe books.

If i could only have two workshop books they would both be Model Engineers Handbook by Tubal Cain. One dirty copy for the workshop and a clean one for the house. I still turn to this book every time I have to make something.

The workshop practice books are very hit or miss, some are very old now and totaly out of date..

Geo Thomas books are read in the house, but i have used very little of his designs. Perheps when i retire.

Thread: Thank you

Hello Brian

I am looking for the series on building the Southworth 6inch vertical steam pump. The series started in Model Engineer in Volume 204, No. 4368 31st December 2009 and ran intermittently for 7 parts finishing on 29th July 2011, but i do not have the specific issue numbers. I would be very grateful if you could please copy them.

many thanks mike

Thread: Boiler build: help requested

Basicly yes, but allways talk to the boiler inspector first before any work is started.

Again to push the Steamboat Association, (**LINK**) they have a boiler design library of the size you are looking at. There are VFT and loco types and water tube designs.

There is also the Kichen rudder which, taken from Wiki " a combination rudder and directional propulsion delivery system for relatively slow speed displacement boats which was invented in the early 20th century by John G.A.Kitchen of Lancashire, England. It turns the rudder into a directional thruster, and allows the engine to maintain constant revolutions and direction of drive shaft rotation while altering thrust by use of a control which directs thrust forward or aft. Only the rudder pivots; the propeller itself is on a fixed shaft and does not."

I know of one steamboat a 20 footer which uses one of these.

Hi John

I should think it would make a rather different and good steam boat engine. You could fit a prop from a IC engine to suit the revs or just have a belt drive with a 2:1 reduction, quite commom on steamboats. Boilers, either buy one or make a weldless one. Details from the Steamboat Association website. There is also a reversing propeller for sale there . No need for a gearbox.

Yes, what may appear to be dry to us, would indeed have a very thin oil film.

. It is important that the gauge blocks have a very thin coating of oil before they are wrung together. See this thread on 'practicalmachinist' which also includes links to some manufacturers notes:

Regards,

Andrew

We were taught different. if you have a film of oil then that is going to alter the size. Oil should not be needed to wring together.

Avoid TNT post as much as you can, we switched over to TNT from Royal Mail and the service is crap. We are now receiving over 16000 calls a month mostly about mail not received. A recent test posting shows over 50% still not delivered over 14 days.

Royal Mail are still the best out there for quaitly of service..

I used a paint stripper made for stripping fibreglass. It worked Ok, no issues with the later painting, but too many years ago to recall brand.

Thread: Keyway in flywheel
08/07/2014 13:58:59

I am just about to cut the keyway in a 4 inch scale little Samson flywheel. My qustion is, what clearance if any is needed in the vertical height. This is for a 1/4 inch key. Side to side fitting is tight, I just need to know about the vertical distance.

Thanks

Bob and Martin

Never heard of the Gibraltar tool post then.

Hi Brian

I have good results from the tool in your last link. For best results ditch your top slide and replace with a large lump of cast iron or steel.
