Thread: Lock making |

One of the very first jobs I did on board ship was to repair a lock. The shipwright I was following was going to bin it and fit another. I had a go at fixing it and it worked. As howwever this was over 30 years ago I have no ideal what was broke or how I fixed it. |
Thread: Boxford lathe 280 |
02/07/2016 09:05:16 |
I replaced my Boxford AUD with a modern Boxford and am very pleased with it. Make sure that it has the headstock bush and changegears. If the one you are looking at has the full 3 lever gearbox then and is in good nick then the price is determined by how much comes with it. A bare machine will be just sub £1000 upto £2000 for one with everything with it, ie bush, gears, chucks, faceplate, catchplate, studyies, QCTP with lots of holders working coolent pump. I paid £1100 for a 10-30 and then around £400 for all the missing bits. Boxford still sell part but are pricely. These are very good machines which are under priced compared to other UK machines such as Harrisons and the smaller Colchesters. |

Just a side point, boilers made for steamboats do not require to be CE marked.

I like the 952 cone shape best. Edited By Hollowpoint on 26/03/2016 10:55:35 That's what I tend to use on castings, linisher is quicker on sheet material edges. But I am cleaning up the inside edge of holes on sheet steel, Linisher will not work.

I have a dremel type mini grinder. I use it either to grind surfaces ,like cleaning up a casting or to clean up the egde of thin sheet. I just cut some 1.2 mm SS sheet. Do you perfer the sanding drums or to use a stone? I find that the stones i use are very soft and wear away quickly. Does anyone have good results with the tiny milling cutters type?

thanks all, I has just bought a nibber from RDG. I can always find a reason for buying a new tool. I have a couple more boilers covers to build next year so decided to buy.

As part of a boiler casing I have 2 6 holes to cut in stainless steel sheet, 1.2 mm thick, The sheet is just over 600mm by 400mm, and the 2 holes located close together near one corner. I did the last one (but on thinner 0.9 mm ) using tin snips. For this one I are trying to decide between chain drilling and cleaning up the edge. or using a cheap scroll saw. What would be the best blade to use to use on 1.2mm stainless. I gave up on the first one as it just vibrated all over the place. Or what are your handy tips for chain drilling to simply knock out the center and have minium clean up of the edge. Mike |

Look at http://www.wirralmodelengineeringsociety.co.uk/ like most other clubs based around model railways but we have other interests as well. A few of us are into road steam models and full size steam boats. Mike |

Thanks for the link Rod, but something like 1/32 rather than 1/16 would be bettter. I like the ideal of joining two pieces together. |

To finish off a boat boiler I want to use brass angle as trim . How do I bend the angle?, the radius is around 6 inches, Yet to buy the angle, size will be a round 12 -18 mm thickness unknown. |
Thread: Dehumidifiers |

I have a cemet sheet and wood workshop, lined and insulation everywhere i could get it. There is a small gap at the bottom of the door which provides a draft. I do not have any rust problems but recently bought a very cheap Aldi dehumidifer around £20. My humidity hit a peak of 95%on a very wet day but normally around 70 %. But as I said no rust on any tools/matrials left out.

I used to work with boiling HF in the oil industry. After use and being neutralised it all went down the lab drain. A couple of years later and the gardeners mower found a large hole in the ground just outside our window. The HF had eaten the waste pipe and quite a bit of soil. |
