Thread: BBC 2 - Looking for Backyard Engineers
24/11/2015 14:07:40

I too do not want to waste time. With adverts. That is why almost everything I watch is recorded and I skip through the adverts. Adverts now take about 20 minutes out of every hour so I can watch an hour long program in 40 minutes.

The BBC should stick to broadcasting stuff the likes of us don't watch and shut down most of their radio, tv and website channels. Also scrap the licence fee, I object to about £150 a year so the wife can watch Eastenders..

Thread: Pillow block bearings

Lots on EBay.

Thread: Grinding a four-jaw chuck
23/11/2015 16:37:20

Put a washer at the start of the jaws (near tailstock). Grind the outside diameters of both outer steps. Set each jaw parallel to the surface, just grind the inside face of the jaws (the bit that holds the work. You should be able to do this in a milling machine with a grinding wheel on the arbor. Don't forget the wheel guard.

Thread: Choice of Milling Cutters

Make sure the three flute cutters are centre cutting.

Thread: Newsletter

I expect someone can forward it to you but you need to say if ME or MEW.

Thread: Stuart 10H and 10V build thread
23/11/2015 14:31:02

Hi Chrish I think I have a dehumidifier in the shed from when I had a wooden shed. I do have heaters but not got round to fitting them. l will do now I am doing the build thread. Damp is not much of a problem as it is a brick built shed with the widows bricked up.

When the cylinder mounting face is flat clamp it to the faceplate and clean up the feet to size.

You need to be sure that the feet are flat and true to the cylinder mounting face. Firstly clean up the faces with a file. Then put the feet on a parallel against an angle plate and clock the cylinder mounting od. Then turn 180 degrees and check the other face. They should be identical readings by within abou 0.005 thou inch. Should be close enough. Then do the same with the feet vertically against the angle plate. Again they should be within about 0.005 thou. You will have to adjust the feet by filing until the feet are correct. This will put the cylinder mounting face in the centre of the legs. Then you can mount on the faceplate and clock the cylinder mounting od and face, bore and skim the mounting face off. It is a bit too cold in the workshop at the moment as there is no heating in it but I hope to continue in the next couple of days.

Thread: Copyright ownership

You can post anything on a website and keep your copyright unless the terms of the website say different. However, someone is going to steal it. Not worth the bother of trying to stop it.

Thread: Araldite Pigment Additive Query
22/11/2015 18:53:03

I think toner powder is carcinogenic.

Thread: Mill to replace drill?
22/11/2015 16:41:06

If you have a good mill, you don't really need a drilling machine. I never found the need for one in my workshop although I do have one.

Thread: Parting tool for ML7
22/11/2015 16:39:12

There was a rear parting off tool for the Myford ML7 Short cross slide in an early MEW. I expect you can find the plans in an online index. If you get totally stuck I can probably find plans for the one I designed and post them here.

Thread: Araldite Pigment Additive Query

You can get black acrylic repair kits for about £13. They are usually acrylic on a fibreglass base hence the white underneath.

Thread: simat 101 backgear
22/11/2015 16:30:07

Tailstock chuck arbor from EBay. 0 morse taper but will probably need shorting. Might need to undercut the arbor thread to screw drill chuck fully on. Cowells do a replacement headstock mandrel for their lathe (M14 X 1) but I am not sure how compatable it is with a Simat.

Thread: Material for pulley shaft, and bearings

They often have largish roller bearings on eBay like Plummer blocks but with floating bearings that might be suitable.

Thread: How to make a hollow punch for making teflon washers
22/11/2015 13:19:08

You could possibly use a hole saw or two. Easy to cut the outside first then the bore and clean up on the lathe.

Thread: CM10 Mill Gears
22/11/2015 09:48:12

It might be safer and cheaper to buy a bit of steel with known qualities. Cheaper than a new mill.

Thread: Unimat 3 thread cutting attachment
22/11/2015 09:44:34

They are often on EBay .com and .co.uk but they are not cheap. Would probably give you an idea what you are looking for/ need to make.

Thread: Motor issues
22/11/2015 09:37:41

A 1/4hp motor will probably be fine for the size of cutters you would use on a Centec. I thought the reversing switch was usually on the lower front of the machine but it has been nearly forty years since I used one. The switch reversed the direction of rotation by flicking the lever. This was a three phase machine.
