Thread: British machine tools
10/08/2014 20:05:04

No one seems to have mentioned, (unless I have missed it) RDG tools in Mytholmroyd, who now own the Myford name, and all the remaining Myford stock, their website shows brand new machines and picture galleries of gearboxes being manufactured. I have recently bought a late model Speed 10, in perfect condition with a load of new accessories for a grand, and am over the moon with it, no comparison when put against my mates Chester machine.

Thread: New(ish) Speed 10
21/07/2014 21:22:42

I have finally found out what threads are used on the bull wheel and the gib adjusters, they are 2BA, the backgear one being 2BA x 5/8th cap head screws and the gibs 2BA x 3/4 dog point set screws, all now ordered from Myfords at Mytholmroyd....

Hello Bri, combining the two is brilliant, I get to play with boats and steam engines at the same time.....

Thanks Clive, I will look into that, are the feedscrews for thr Speed 10 the same as those for ML7 then?

Thread: Steam Boat Ban
20/07/2014 08:40:00

Just been reading back over this thread, I think a quick update is in order. Three years on now and I have been happily sailing my steam boats, no one makes a fuss about it, I have not killed, maimed or injured anyone with an exploding boiler and everyone gets along just fine, and, I am now an active member of the new club. Here is a photo of my launch steaming happily around the lake.

Thread: 4 inch rotary table

Thread: New(ish) Speed 10

Hi Norman, many thanks for your reply, Ihe machine I have is a Speed 10 long bed, and came equiped with a leadscrew clutch and re setting dials, but not the tumbler reverse, however, it does have an electrical reverse, but a tumbler kit would be handy if I could find one. I am now awaiting the arrival of some castings for a marine engine for a future boat project, but in the 2 weeks I have had the machine, I have made a winch for the African Queen that I am in the process of finishing, here is a couple of photos of my efforts.

Hi Clive, many thanks I will look tomorrow. I do have a manual, will that tell me if the mod has been done? If not, are the parts available?

Regards,

Nick.

Hi Folks, just got a late model Speed 10 from the 'new' Myfords in Yorkshire, can anyone tell me what size is the caphead screw that locks the bullwheel, and the size/thread of the gib adjusting screws on the topslide? It is a bit late to phone Myfords now, and I want to try and get hold of some tomorrow (Sunday). The existing ones have been damaged due to my ineptitude I'm afraid. Also, is a special allen key needed for the bullwheel, as there is very little room and a standard 1/8th key is too long to fit in the available space. Apart from that, it is an excellent little machine that has had very little use.

Many thanks in advance,

Nick

Thread: Steam Boat Ban

Hi there, I did not realise the fuss over the banning of steam boats at New Brighton has spilled over to the halloeed pages of Model Engineer. It was I who was pictured in the papers and on BBC North west, this ' ban' , it seems was not a prpoer ban, the council put the signs up at the request of NBMBC, whose only reason for it was, and I quote Mr Alan Dean, illustrious president of the club 'we dont want them here'. he made that comment before the fuss started in a conversation I had with him some time ago, that was all he could say after I had parried all his thrusts regarding insurance etc. I am a member of the MPBA, and am covered by their insurance. My Maccsteam boiler has a 4 year manufacturers test certificate, my little German manufactured boiler is classed as 'toy steam' I tried to have it tested, but this proved not possible, and I have been reliably informed that it does not require testing due to tis size and the fact that it falls well within the bar/litre rules. I have also been told that Mr Dean does not speak for all at the club. the man is a fool, (hope I am allowed to say that) not just my opinion, but also that of many others. This bloke was interviewed by BBc and he said, on TV that ' these things can explode, sending red hot pieces of shrapnel flying in all directions, I'm not saying it will kill any body, but they will certainly maim somone' what a load of tosh, the man clearly does not know what he is talking about.
Anyway, the upshot of all this is that I can sail my steamers at New Brighton lake whenever I wish, there has been no by-law put into force, so I will not be doing anything illegal and If anyone was to complain (at the lake) I couldn't care less, I am doing no wrong.

Thanks for your suggestions, I shall have a go, as a relative newcomer to this hobby I will need to do some research into tool and cutter making

Hi there
Has anyone come across a machine like this before? (see photo) It has 3 crompton motors, 1 to drive the grinding head, 1 to drive the workhead and 1 to drive the lapping plate. The workhead on my example has 2 pratt burnard 5 inch scroll chucks mounted on it and swivrls on a mounting that is graduated in degrees. This assembly can bev moved longitudally along the bed via a leadscrew. the grinding head has 2 wheels (one on each end) and moves across the bed. It also has a coolant system supplied by a gearwheel type pump.
The machine is of 1970's vintage and is in perfect condition. I have a notion to convert it to another use, any ideas? the photos are scanned from the manual, I will post better ones when I get my camera fixed.

Thread: Lusus Naturae - Drawing Revisions
08/03/2010 13:30:53
Hi there, Where on the website can I find the baseplate drawing and correctly dimensioned valve gear drawing for Lusus Naturae? They were there last time I looked, but I can no longer see them.
Many Thanks,
Nick
Thread: ST Oscillator

I have just purchased a seig co lathe, and as a first project I am building an ST occillator and was wondering if anyone has made one. The cylinder was easy enough to machine up, the bit i''m flapping about is the standard, so any tips would be greatfully recieved.
Many Thanks in anticipation,
Nick
