Thread: Any other Barker lathe owners out there?
07/05/2013 23:34:31

I have just got myself a nice one of these but am having problems working out the gearing from the belt drive through the gears. Would anyone have a workshop manual I could get a copy of or a scan etc . I have a suspicion it may not be all there.

Thanks Mark

Thread: Magnetic bronze

Thanks folks I was kind of hoping it would be hard enough to make a cylinder liner for a .46 two stroke glow engine. Frustratingly I just cant lay my hands on ant mild steel at the moment.

I have some bronze that is slightly magnetic has anyone any idea what this could be. Would it be softer or harder than "normal" bronze ? It came from the rudders from a RAF launch.

Thread: Myford chucks
12/06/2011 22:45:16
Thanks for your replies. I have spent ages cleaning the threads and things are getting easier. I believe a bit of aluminium swarf got in the thread and caused the binding. I should like to run a tap and die over the threads but they seem a bit expensive so will persevere with the wire brush and magnifying glass. Thanks again.

How far should chucks go onto the spindle thread of an ML7 ? Put another way, how many turns is a minimum ? None of mine go fully on and all seems very clean.

Can anyone suggest a supplier of casting supplies near Doncaster? Although I live on the Isle of Mull I will be visiting down that way soon.
Thanks Mark

Thanks eveyone for the replies to my post.  I have been doing a fair bit of reading and in none of the books do the authors talk about turning stainless. some of my stock is 2 5/8" diameter..  I have ended up with a ML7 Tri leva but am now wondering if it will be up to the job. Any comments anyone ?.
  Thanks in advance

Thank you gentlemen for all your replies. They have given me lots of makes to look for. Not sure if personal messages are permitted on this site but if so perhaps Bogstandard could direct me to some of the projects he has on the net.   Am I wrong to think the Myford would struggle on stainless, marine grade or 316 or A4 as we call it ?  Lastly is there a lath out there that has an unusualy large spindle size ( diameter of rod that will pass through the back of a chuck) but is still ay  the cheaper end of the market ?

Are there any alternative lathes to the ML7 that would take the same tooling and be as versatile. I am thinking second hand to keep the price down and not Chinese.  A little bigger would be OK but as I am hoping to make some stainless bits for my old boat smaller would probably be a mistake.  Cleaning and rebuilding would be Ok as I would then get to know it inside out.
 Any sugestions greatly appreciated.
