Thread: boring 20 mm diameter hole in aluminium
28/09/2023 11:19:55

The thread on the arbor of my holesaw can just accommodate two hole saws, front one only has a a couple of threads, if for any reason I have to enlarge a hole using made a hole saw I simply screw the smaller holesaw on the front and use this as a guide, rather like the pilot drill , but as the smaller holesaw is not actually cutting there is no problem with it either being difficult to remove or stripping the threads.

Have to admit that I have only ever done this in thin materials

Thread: Taper Roller Ring Removal

Usually if I get a head race that I cant get a puller behind or a drift the only way I have found successful every time is to run a bead of weld around the inside of the race allow it to cool and the weld will "shrink" the race and more often or not will fall out have also used this method to remove valve seats.

Thread: Looking for a beginners project
09/08/2023 18:16:47

I realise napoleon hat clocks are not longcase , but if I sent my wife to buy a clock she would probably get "overenthusiastic " and come home with a half dozen longcase clocks. Once was watching an online auction where three motorcycle projects were up for sale was interested in buying 1 of them, liked the potential of all three, but only wanted to buy 1 I hadnt a real preference just depended on the price they went for, discussed it with her as we would have to pick it up from around 200 miles away and as it happened won the first one , thinking that was that, told my wife and said I was going for a cup of tea, did she want one, came back with the teas and shes sitting at the computer, watching this auction or so I thought, gave her her tea and she said "we got them".She'd bid on the other two as they were going for less than I had thought I would have paid. Just writing this realized the last bike I finished was the BSA A65 she bid on. Got its MOT next week, so looking forward to that, before anyone says anything I realize that as a historic vehicle it may not need one but prefer to get it checked just in case I missed something.

If there was anything like evening classes for this would be more than willing to take part but living where I do and with the scales of budget cuts we have had the nearest colleges offering any kind of courses , let alone anything interesting are well out of sensible travelling distance.

Just rebuilt the pull starter on the strimmer, so wary of springs, ordered a copy of colin thornes book so looking forward to reading that, the wife likes auctions, so will set her a mission to find a cheap napoleon hat mantle clock, although that may be a bad idea, where would I put half a dozen longcase clocks?

Hi

Went to workshop/ garage today to finish a couple of bits and pieces, looking to start with my next project.....

Unfortunately there is no more space to build another bike, so the boxes of bits are just going to have to stay as they are, thinking what to do until I can sort more storage space where I can get the bikes out to use, Ive always wanted to build a clock, the mechanisms have always fascinated me, but I have very little knowledge of how they actually work, so, can you please recommend somewhere to start, I know many of you will advise me to watch watch youtube videos, but for various reasons I have a complete aversion to that type of media, so a good book would be ideal.

Also what tools would I be likely to need, unfortunately dont have a milling machine but have a milling attachment for my lathe

Glad to see Paul MIlls 4 has got what he wants. Does that mean that Paul Mills 3 (the OP) will do the same, I wonder? Pete White falls into another bracket with his Linux set-up, unless he goes dual-boot with Windows when he will get the best and worst of the deals.

I treat my preferred 3D CAD package (Alibre Atom) as just another tool in the workshop armoury. As such, sometimes you just have to look big and pay up, as you would do with any other tool, be it a humble lathe tool or the lathe itself. If the drawing package you select suits you and does what you want it to, go ahead and buy it, I say. I found Alibre reasonably easy to pick up and it will export 3D drawings as dimensioned 2D files in several formats as well as STEP, and STL for importation into 3D printer slicer software such as Cura, for example, which I thought was the OP's requirement.

My 2d,

John

Thanks, everyone for your suggestions have downloaded solid edge ce, done so!me of the tutorials and actually produced a drawing for a part I need to make for an 1930 New Hudson ....but cant find a widget to print it off . Unfortunately the workshop computer screen tends to get obscured by important stuff (kettle) when I am working.

Alan Wood 4 the workshop is a couple of miles away, and I once got a mobile phone signal there but was sitting on the roof fixing theridge, its quite remote even compared to home, oh and its not even in same country, just across the border into England.

Thanks for the suggestions, solid edge is looking like a good option but tried downloading and installing solid edge last night, after about 30 minutes to download I tried installing it, and after getting past windows defender, which I thought was disabled, tried installing programme was unpacking it and then came up with file is corrupted message, will try again later.

The link I used to download was the one in the post IanT linked to will see if I can find a different one, but for now got a magneto to fit on my douglas and timing belts on the paso and then go for test rides so that will keep me out of trouble for today.

Think you could be right. I wonder why they don't solve the real problem and develop something as good as the others?

Why should they bother, they've virtually got a monopoly, if they keep dumping the same rubbish on us sooner or later they'll get a large market share just from general laziness of users not being bothered or just unable to get rid of it and it will then become the normal.

Or am I being cynical ........again

Just started my latest project, it's I believe a 1930ish Douglas T6 600cc twin, it's mostly all there and should make a tidy ride when complete.

If you haven't been or joined I can thoroughly recommend the douglas forum and the london douglas club, very friendly and helpful and the club has a good spares scheme. Looks like a lot an interesting project

Thread: Wiring and connectors
08/04/2022 21:59:06

The only crimps I have seen are aluminium and with copper wiring there is the problem with galvanic corrosion leading to a mess at connections (as Ive not found a reliable way of keeping out moisture) and while I have seen soldered connections that are nearly 60 years old showing little sign of corrosion any soldered connection I make have always suffered from corrosion after a short whiles exposure to the elements and road conditions. The bikes are a BSA ,a New Hudson and a Xj Yamaha and are or will be used all year round .the BSA has had an aftermaket harness fitted which started to give problems after around a years use , the New Hudson will be started from scratch, and the Yam harness is starting to break down after around 30 years use. The terminals on the Yamaha harness appear to be spot welded and it was this that I was hoping to replicate

Think I'll have a look at building a battery terminal welder and see if I can get it to make a strong connection, seen a few designs on the web that may work but thinking I'll have to make it heavier duty and possibly a variable setup to cope with the difference in metals.

08/04/2022 11:35:16

Need to do some rewiring on a couple of old motorcycles, and not for the first time , no problem actually doing the wiring but these are going to be used in all weathers and from past experience I know that after a couple of months exposure to road conditions, salt and vibrations the connections between the wire and terminal will start to fail. In the past have tried many types of joining these solder, crimp etc.

Thinking about the possibility of something like spot welding, and have seen what appears to be this method on some oem japanese harnesses but have no knowledge of where to start or what equipment I would need. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for the links, have some brazing to do but unfortunately the hottest heat source I have is mapp gas and as the components are quite heavy cant get them hot enough to get braize to work properly so will need something hotter can anyone tell me what sort of torches and hoses/ regulators I would need

Not that long ago my son was doing his apprenticeship at a joinery workshop and was sent to get a new bubble for a spirit level so went to the local shop bought some sweets are then and gave the empty blown up bag with the top twisted closed to the guy who had sent him, the recipient opened the bag shook it and complained it was empty so my lad said that he had spilt the bubbles and demanded loudly he paid for them, producing the cash receipt for the sweets. As everyone had heard they forced the guy to pay. Angus never had another joke played on him
