Thread: Screw cutting problem
17/03/2022 12:04:13

I was using.g the setting over of the compound slide as that was the way that I was taught to screw cut when I wasvan apprentice

( 50 yrs ago). The smallest lathe that we used was a Colchester Student which seemed huge to a 15yr old lad who had never used a lathe before, and compared to the Myford that I now own it was.

Everyone has given me lots to think about on this topic and I will try out most of the suggestions forwarded.

When Hopper came back to me very early on in the discussion he answered a question that I hadn't even given any thought to

I.E. not being able to set the compound slide over to 30 degrees from square onto the axis. I have forgotten a great deal that I did when an apprentice, but wasn't a machine apprentice anyway but a fitter.

I have just had a thought aswell and it's 55yrs not 50yrs as I first said.

A 0.004" cut was taken to see if all was good after the initial scratch cut was taken, if your unsure or need to gain confidence taking it steadily is how you gain confidence, and experience.

As I said in the first post it's some 50yrs since I did any screw cutting in a lathe, so the toothbrush was my choice to try and get back to it.

Thread: Over 70 Driving Licence Renewal
13/03/2022 14:44:01

A gentleman who lives some 50 yds from me, and is the same age as me, in fact born on the same day hasn't had a renwal notice yet. I had mine 90 days before my old licence ran out, filled in the couple of bits and got my photo done at the local photographers. A friend of mine who is a company managing director signed the photo on the back as required.

I went down to the post office in the village and sent the application as a to be" signed for letter". When I got home I realised that I hadn't included my old licence so decided to wait and see what happens.Just short of 2 weeks later a letter from DVLA arrived. I guessed it was my licence so opened it, but no it was the application and a letter saying that they needed more proof of it being me who had applied to renew my licence. I had sent my birth certificate so what else did they need ? There was also a bit of hand writing in red ball point "No O/L" obviously" No old licence."

So I phoned the number from the letter, and got through to a queue for about 20 mins. A gentleman came on the phone and said that they wanted evidence of my national insurance number, or some thing that is from DWP stating that I am in reciept of pension, and of course my old driving licence, AND THEY MUST be returned in the envelope provided.

O/K no problem it is my fault, all put in the provided envelope ready to go down to the village post office next morning so that a signed for letter is sent to them.

Just over a week later another letter from the DVLA and of course I thought "not again", but no it was my licence, and a plain letter from them too with the documents they wanted sent back.

This was some 3 weeks ago when it arrived, but the guy up t he road hasn't had anything fr om then yet.

It was by the way a paper licence not a photo one, and I don't have a current passport.

Thanks gents, it makes perfect sense to me now hopper, I have set it to 30 degrees from parallel, not from square to the job.

I wasn't a machinist back when I was an apprentice, but an apprentice fitter who had a good apprenticeship covering machining, welding, sheet metal work etc at a training centre for the first year with block release to college. Then back to the main company and put with a skilled man for the rest of my time, still with block release and day release to college.

All of this was 50 yrs ago and so a great deal has gone from my memory.

I don't think that I used the right word when I said advancing Tim, it's more not moving forward with the pitch of the thread, but seems to be lagging behind as though the cutting tool had been moved away from the headstock direction to the taistock direction all be it at an angle, with the compound slide rather than moved forward. If that makes sense, it 's rather difficult for me to describe it. Please forgive me.

JA, I indeed put a scratch cut on to check that all was as it should be, after 1 cut all seemed good, so after 4 cuts and a look at the thread using a magnifying glass showed the problem that I had.

Thanks again for the great help that you have given me, I can get in the workshop and get it sorted out now. It's nice to know that there is always someone out there who is willing to give their advice gained from experience and knowledge.

Hello everyone, I'm looking for some advice on a screwcutting problem that I have come up against.

I'm trying to cut a 3/8" x 24 t.p.i. on my Myford ML7. I have set the cutting tool height exactly using a DTI and a height gauge just as I have for all my other cutting tools. The compound slide is set at 30 degrees and checked using a friends vernier protractor, and the tool set to the correct angle using a Moore & Wright screw cutting gauge.

I put a piece of waste mild steel in the 3 jaw chuck with a dead centre in the tail stock lubricated of course. The cutting tool was moved to just a scratch cut using the cross slide (and the reading noted ).and the half nut engaged. The cutting was taken away from the material using the cross slide and the half nut disengaged etc. A new cut put on using the compound slide, cutting tool moved back to the original position and another cut taken.

I repeated this perhaps 4 times, only putting on a cut of 0.004" each time and then examined the thread cut so far using a magnifying glass only to find that it seems to only be cutting on the tailstock side of the thread not the headstock end, so doesn't seem to be advancing.

I haven't done any screwcutting on a lathe since I was an apprentice, but have looked in my old college work books, some workshop practice series books,L.H. Sparey the amateurs lathe and some videos on utube etc. They all do the same as I am doing, except their threads seem to be advancing, whereas mine don't, can anyone offer up any advice please, as I am at a total loss.

Many thanks in anticipation and advance.

Phillip.

Thread: Myford question
12/11/2021 16:48:51

Hello every one my first post on here, so please excuse my ignorance, but here goes.

I hope that this is in the right forum if not sorry.

What is the spindle bore of a Myford ML7, small bore and big bore.

I'm trying to identify which one it is.

Is there a difference is the outer dia, I.E. are the chucks interchangeable without having to change the backplate. I recently aquired this current machine, I have had a Myford before, a super 7 b pxf, but the chucks came with it, so totally in the dark.

Thans in advance everyone.

Hello every one, I've just joined up and looking forward to reading a great many informative and interesting posts.

I have recently changed my lathe from a Chester 918 back to my original make of a Myford, an ML7 this time, as opposed to my original Super 7B PXF. Circumstances in life change, so the ML7 will be here for many years to come.

I started to make a nice simple wobble plate engine on the Chester but never got it completed, I still have it so it will be my first project.

Machining was not my expertise, so may need some help and advice from you good people at times.

Phillip.
