lathe xcx.jpgJason B So this photo is one I have in my album of my laithe which is at work and I am at home with a broken collar bone. So do I put the gear into 1 and the other leaver into E to get 1.5 mm thread? Sorry I am a real noob at this but very willing to learn. Thanks Mark

laithe 20201.jpgHi everyone. I have been enjoying my Smart and Brown Mk2 laithe which I have restored bit now I want to learn how to cut thread.

I just need a little bit of guidance. I do not understand the gear chart. Eg If I wanted to cut 1.5 mm threads it gives in the F gear 1 is 1.5 which I think is the thread I am wanting to cut. 2 is 0.75 no clue and 3 is .375 and i haven't a clue.

Any help explaining the gear chart would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Thread: Smart & Brown thro tumble gear broken.

Thanks for all your replies, I undid the grub screw and tapped the handle with a brass drift and it came apart (I think there might have been a burr on the handle) Now I just need to make the replacement part on my clarke lathe. Thanks again for the lovely welcome and all your help.

Hi everyone, New boy here and also new to lathes. I have been gifted a "Smart and Brown" A model Mk II lathe which had neglected and left in a damp shed for 20 years. I have spent a lot of time enjoying restoring it and now it all works, doesnt leak oil and is a superb machine apart from the "thro tumble gear nipple" on the handle which is broken. I have removed the grub screw on the handle but the handle wont come off. I dont want to force it, can anyone advise how to remove the handle so I can make a new nipple? Thanks in advance.
