Thread: Carriage stop/dial gauge mount.

Hi Guys

Below are my findings from Clarke CL500M

Ive even had a bash at designing a clamp with Splash-guard holding thingy (top hole of the Greyed out image).

dti clamp.jpg

Its tight down there, and that guard (see pink marker) will have to be cut down.

If anyone fancies printing me one, give me a shout, I'll gladly work with you to resolve any design issues.

cheers

I thought this was brilliant.

DC31k - It's a good idea. But I'm sure sure of the type of fixing you mean (slot and clamping screw)? Can you please clarify (what and where it would fit) on below.

BTW there is a 2" on eBay now, by Chronos for £39.99 and a USED for £34; but I want 50mm.

If anyone has a used FOR SALE?ideaforslot_s-l1600.jpg

Cheers

Thanks guys

I am just drawing now for Clarke bed. Im also in touch with the ebay manufacturer to have one made thereafter.

DC31K - Its not a bad idea as that would get me up and running without further expense (if I can find a spacer thingymabob), but Id still be limited to just that 1" or what ever (Im sure mine are not even that).

I have seen metric 50mm on ebay somewhere. I think its from Italy. Best part of £100 I think.

Nigel, Agreed clocks are delicate things so will need to be careful. Maybe I have found a use for my Lockdown condom stash. Obviously, dont try this guys if the mrs is partial to a nosey. I didnt know what a mic stop was until I googled. Looks like a plan also, BUT I still need the clamp.

Howard, Thanks again. Ive just seen the clamp pic. So thats a Mic stop - looks a belter. What Mic is required (special or internal)?

So I need to make sure mine is diverse enough to hold both.

Thats enough optioneering from me for one day. I think we've all deserved a glass of red.

cheers

Hi all

Did anyone get any further with this?

I know Im polishing a turd, but I would be interested in buying or making one of these for CL500M

It woudl be good to find 50mm long reach clocks also. I can find 2"

cheers

I hadnt thought of magnets, but have a couple so will definitely try that out.

I do intent to run a vacuum, hopefully I can position the nozzle to catch the majority.

Thanks Martin

I will update my drawing with those details and see where Im at.

I bough the cast iron blank. Unfortunately it has a big boss in the middle that to get rid of. May be messy like Stu mentioned.

Thread: Bench (tool) grinder
22/05/2021 18:10:59

Hi Harry

They look OK but even they are expensive. Jeez I sound like a right cheap B######

I have loads of tools, need to start using them. Im just finishing setting machine up so good to go really.

I was just grinding a bespoke HSS tool on old/abused Bench grinder and it was not good. I need to change both wheels for level/square edges and probably for safety as well. Ive just bought a tool rest, so will do all that when it comes.

I think I have seen somewhere on the site suggestions for 50 grit for rough grinding and 100 grit for finishing the tool.

Anyone with advice on that. Ill probably get from Toolstation/Screwfix

cheers

22/05/2021 17:53:54

Thanks Ega/ Mike

Nice rest though

I dont think Ive every used a CBN wheel. Ive just seen the price. Never worked in a 'money is no object' workshop, I'll be sticking the 'value for money' wheels.

I need new wheels (for HSS) and Id like wider if poss. I suppose Im stuck with the same the the B-grinder has already. None of my tungsten tipped tools with fit the CL500M so thats not a concern.

cheers

Hi all

I was just watching the promo video for the Diamond Tool Holder

The tool rest and wheel type

Hi Stu

Yes. Makes sense. I think doing the drawing was worth while now.

I will measure all up and modify the drawing. I'll ask you and John to check then. Hopefully other will be able to use.

Howard

What's this M2Z thingymabob. Have you got a pic?

cheers

Thanks again Howard

The skimming of edge for a datum is a great painless idea. Will ease setting up.

I'll get the fixings in place and think about those struts. Not used the miller yet, but from comments I've seen about stability of the machine when milling, that may be the least of my problems.

Cheers

So the Splash Guard is done. Just need to paint and fasten it proper.

Also, I went for a lump of FOC I-section instead giving Clarke £75. I'll see how I get on when Ive got it fastened down.

Not: Clarke shite vice for demonstration purposes only.

Hi Stu

Regarding the struggle while swapping chucks. You recommend replacing these bolts with studs and nuts?

21/05/2021 15:39:18

Thanks Martin - pubs are open as well

John - Hi and Thanks again. So Recess on one side (where i have 8mm) and Boss on other side where I have flush. Is that correct?

If all holes are coinciding with recess - best to drill those first.

I have just looked on vevor where I bought and not enough details - to make a drawing anyway. It is definitely Cast Iron though. Will look on ebay and double check on actual before starting.

21/05/2021 15:17:33

Hi Martin

Thanks for that - My 4-Jaw is exactly the same as Stu's (San ou K72-160 160mm (6" 4 Jaw chuck), hence the 4 bolts (through the chuck into the plate) and the 3-studs (which should be same as yours),

Would you mind sharing a pic of the back of your 4-jaw chuck? Maybe tell me what that diameter is (for a sanity-check when I measure).

cheers

21/05/2021 15:11:57

Hi Stu

That's the 0.099 and the 0.008mm on the side view

You cant see the top line as its covered by the top stud. It got a bit congested to add any further detail.

I feel now if I exchange all of the dimensions for actuals I will have it sorted.

BTW I have never taken the 3-Jaw chuck off. I will obviously to get the dimensions.

I'm guessing those studs should be High tensile steel as well? Probably buy some bolts and cut down.

thanks

21/05/2021 13:37:48

Thanks Stu

Its beginning to make sense now. Are the 3 Threads in your photo studs?

I havent measured anything yet, but I this is my current understanding of the plate design.

Do let me know if you see anything glaringly incorrect.

Thanks

Thanks all. Noted about the Cast Iron v Steel

i actually have a load of weight not being used, so may look at that. I'd have have thought that cast would be crap quality though,

Normally I would have no hesitation, but with this mini machine I have yet to build any confidence with. Possibly I can get machined outside.

Stu/John any chance you could post a photo of the insides of your adapter or drawing?

Cheers

20/05/2021 22:15:52

Hi guys

I've just received my 4 jaw chuck and am about to ask around my contacts for a blank 160x20 as advised by Stuart.

Would you mind advising what is the best material for the blank/adapter?

Thanks
