it all comes down to the skill of the person doing the job soldering requires some. any fool can squeeze a pair of pliers

at the risk of upsetting a lot of people on here

we buy a budget machine put it in a shed then try measuring to .001 with something marked to.01that we have had for years. i think its too much to ask for. perhaps better to say can i make stuff does it work if yes no problem. however if no and .001 mm limits are really needed its time to spend some very large sums of money

the machine shop where i work, works to these limits - million pound machines - tempture controlled workshop - measuring equipment sent away annually to be checked.

moan over i off to the shed my cheepo Eastern mill and my 80 year old English lath is waiting

drill and tap as is. is likely to end in a broken tap when the part you glued in moves or jamming the draw bar when it moves later. only safe way is to drill it oversize fit an insert or sleeve. but is it worth it for a piece of junk the cost you nothing

Drilled and tapped with a bit of stud like this sorts it out for future use. I had to dismantle the tailstock to remove this one after putting it in without realising it would not eject. No available slot to stick anything behind it to get it out.

a blacksmiths forge with earth floor, black dust and metal fragments everywhere, a machine shop with overhead line shafts and oil dripping over the lathes. Those are the places I am sure that many of us love to see and visit, but we don't want to work in them do we?

The one thing I would find essential any new workshop though is a 'dirty area' and fume extraction. A shiny, white workshop will soon look different after a couple of years of welding, angle grinding and paint spraying; or do people not undertake those techniques any more?

yes i would like to work in a place like that my whole workshop is a dirty aera

Thread: Mill or drill for the same money

Lots of advice on a Meddings drill at £700 on another forum post.

John Haine makes an interesting point about being able to buy a mill for that money .

So why would you buy a bench drill when you can buy a mill for the same money ?

Edited By br on 12/01/2022 11:01:42

but not if you compare like with like the Meddings is a well made industrial machine a mill for the same money won't be

I looked at that site, Michael, but does it sell small numbers to private buyers? It looks trade-only, wanting 2000, not 2.

buy 2000 then sell what you don't want at a profitsmiley

I’d grind the bearing through taking care not to cut into the shaft as soon as its through it will slip off

i use a 1 mm cutting disc. stop just short of the shart then put a blunted chisel in the slot then give it a tap with hammer to crack the bearing race it will then fall off

I made a 150mm 'height gauge' and got good results.

Purchase a £7.50 digital calliper, remove the non moveable jaw and clamp into a slot machined in an appropriate sized base.Set height to zero on a standard block.
It worked for me!

Roy.

i did this too. except i had too spend a little more on the calliper
