Hi all, Many thanks to Sam Spoons, Pete, Bazyle, Hopper, Howard Lewis and Dave Halford for all your useful advice. You've given me food for thought! Steve |

Hi Guys, I want to sell my old Boxford tool post to a friend but I have no idea what price to sell it at! What do you all think would be a fair price??

Hi all, Many thanks to Steviegtr, Clive Brown 1, Speedy and Sam Spoons for the information listed above, It's very much appreciated. You guys are just amazing. What I need now is effectively how to start the job i.e.., I’ve got a brass bar to practice on and I’m hoping to attempt to turn the screw first perhaps this weekend and I know this is not a simple task but if I don't try then I won't succeed. I do not have a milling machine so I will have to be creative with how I do things. If you have any more images or advice on starting the job that would be great. Step by step would be good for fools like me as I'm not a engineer by birth or training just a beginner enthusiast. |

Hi all, hope your keeping safe in these difficult times. As you know I’ve been learning about my lathe and with the help and guidance from you guys I’ve managed to do a few little projects plus I managed to go on a lathe turning course. I now want to try screw cutting but small bespoke sizes for example 0.7 which is a screw size for a Bugle I have which has no lead pipe tuning screw. I also want to try to turn a bugle mouthpiece and would like to know if anyone knows the best tools for these two projects and any tips to achieve them. Here are some pictures of the types of items I'm looking to create. |

Thank you Sam Spoons for the video link, it's very good and highlights how i can use my boxford gears. Perfect. |

Hi Howard Lewis, Yeah with every ones help here I'm getting better at knowing what to do. I live in Shropshire though I hadn't thought of joining a Model Engineering Club, so thanks for that, I need to have a look. |

Thank you Johnboy25 for your advise and knowledge on this subject. It's much appreciated. |

Thanks Bazyle (Safety point noted) I am good with the stopping the lathe before selecting another lever option and ensuring nothing is in the chuck or sitting loose on the lathe thanks to a lathe course I attended 43 years ago, This being my first time lathe operation since then. Your help and advice is much appreciated. |

Thanks Ronald for that advice and Video link. I will have a look later at that. Much appreciated. Edited By Steve Jones 20 on 23/04/2020 12:16:35 |

Thanks Clive and Martin. I will endeavour to use the correct terminology in future. I do have a copy of "know your lathe" that a member sent me but at this moment in time some of it is like a Foreign language. Lol. Naturally, I’m not an engineer tech guy but a beginner enthusiast. I will get there one day. You guys are amazing - Thank you. |

Thanks Clive and Martin, Could you help me correctly name these levers as it's a nightmare for a novice. |

Ok, so I’m happy to report that the issue here is me and not the lathe (easier fix). Now that I know where the correct position is with all the various levers all seems to be great so I can forget about a reversible motor to change the direction of the spindle as I don’t need that anyway now that I’m beginning to understand what I want to do with the lathe and how a lathe works. So what I wanted to do was actually make the leadscrew move forward and then backwards as required so that the saddle moves automatically. I have now identified the following options with all your help:
You guys have all been brilliant with advice and pictures. I can’t thank you all enough. Sorry if my questions are a little confused at times but I thank you for being understanding. image 1: showing my markings for the 2 speed lever (Fast or slow) and Saddle move Lever marked as R,N,F for Reverse, Neutral, and Forward. thanks guys. i'm going to have a look today to see what happens. |

Thanks Sam. |

Thanks guys, yeah, I take the point of winding the tool out (noting the depth of cut) by hand. I just thought that if the spec says it has reverse then it should at least work or I’ve got to fix it somehow. If the tumbler gears are not engaging properly then I’ve got issues. All advice is welcome Steve |

So, I followed instructions from “Know your lathe manual” and advice from those above (thanks guys, much appreciated) but I’m still having some issues. If I want to do some screw cutting I cant reverse the lathe. Apart from the neutral position, when I put the reverse lever in the up or down position the main leadscrew revolves in the same direction as the main spindle. |

My 1958 Boxford C Lathe is not letting me select reverse, am I doing something wrong or are the gears faulty. I can use the lathe normally but not in reverse. When I select what I think is reverse (as I’m a novice) the gears seem to just lock up. What advice can anyone offer? Steve |

Outstanding, Thank you to, Clive Brown1, Martin C, Yngvar F, Bazyle, Mike E, Mike Clarke,Hopper and Steviegtr, you are all amazing. I have ordered the live centre and chuck. I have also ordered “The amateur`s lathe” book and downloaded the pdf version of "Know your lathe". Later I am going to have a look at gandmtools.co.uk recommended by Mike E and some previous threads on this forum about the Boxford and South Bend lathes recommended by Bazyle. Thank you all very much for your help and support to a novice. Steve Edited By Steve Jones 20 on 14/04/2020 18:42:32 Edited By Steve Jones 20 on 14/04/2020 18:43:46 |

Brilliant, thank you Yngvar F, I thought it was a Boxford C. I've had it a couple of weeks. Is there a user manual somewhere out there? |
