Thread: Tool post for Myford ML10 lathe
07/04/2020 22:10:17

It does look very similar. Does anyone here habe the t37 tool post, and can verify some of the dimensions for me?

06/04/2020 05:01:07

I finally have the ml10 up and running, and realized that the elephant’s foot tool holder works great, but is a lot of fiddling around with during use!

Any other recommendations? I tried a four way tool post and found it to be too big and a pain to use. Does anyone here have photos of their setups, or links to fitting a quick change nodel to their unit??

Thread: Homemade Lathe Tools
05/04/2020 20:18:48

I am creating this thread for myself, but also for those newbie model engineers out there who have little experience machining parts, but are in the middle of learning how to use their machines. So is the case with myself, as I acquired a myford ml10 lathe, and have years of experience building things - just not with machining involved. This is something I really want to become proficient at. I am sure this thread will do a lot of good for those out there wanting to get started in this hobby.

Post any photos for tooling which an amateur and newbie could build on their machine, for practice, and for use at a later time down the road. Try to keep the items out of the rocket scientist categories , in regards to skill level, when it comes to building them. I know there are a lot of talented and skilled individuals on this forum, and they all started off the same way as other amateurs, so post photos of tools you made when first started out.

Thread: Overwhelmed!
05/04/2020 19:45:22

I will most definitely join a club when this is all over.

that being said, does anyone have links to tools they made for their lathes? Anything really. I am just getting started in machining, so have very little experience with the lathe. I have years of experience building stuff with my own two hands though, lots of experience with steel and welding.

I purchased LH Sparey’s “The Amateur’s Lathe”, and am half way through it. The amount of info I have learned is incredible. With that being said, The amount of gadgets talked about, and the tools you can get for these lathes is overwhelming for a beginner like myself.

I am both excited, and overwhelmed. Where do I even start when it comes to outfitting my myford ml10? I purchased some cutters off of amazon, along with a drill chuck, but I really want to be able to expand my learning, which requires more attachments, ie spending money, which isn’t always available.

Obviously this is going to happen slowly over the years, but where should I start in regards to absolutely necessary items for the beginner? Steadies? Dogs? Faceplates? Extra dead centers? Boring tools?

I have played around with the lathe for a few weeks now, and realized that I need some boring tools and a cut off tool. Any recommendations which don’t break the bank during this corona pandemic?

Thread: Guidelines for which steel to use for projects
05/04/2020 17:45:02

I will confess - I'm not into “model” engineering. I use my myford ml10 for building parts for vehicle restorations and stuff around the shop, which is why I was looking for a guide.

02/04/2020 03:09:39

Does anybody have a general guide for which type of steel I should use for different types of projects? Ie, high wear parts...which kind? Or parts that don’t cycle alot, like a mount for something. Which material to learn on, which for weldability...

I’m trying to find the most general list out there, as I begin stocking my cutoff bin.

Thread: Ml10 imperial threadcutting
15/03/2020 18:39:57

That’s great to hear. I’m still learning all of the basics. I bought a book which was recommended to me, and it has been a tremendous help “The Amateur’s Lathe”.

15/03/2020 02:53:24

Still learning the ins and outs of the lathe. I have made a lot of progress on using the machine.

When it comes to the threadcutting on the myford ml10 machine, can imperial threads be cut? Or is it only setup to cut metric threads?

Thread: Myford ML10 Lathe Chuck

How about this

should i look for a higher end unit?

12/03/2020 05:20:04

I finally have my myford ML10 up and running. I have been doing some cutting on steel, and want to invest in a drill chuck for it.

What chuck drill size capacity should I be looking for? Does anyone have a link to some good options?

Thread: Chuck Backing Plate
04/03/2020 07:11:26

They aren’t specifically machined per the chuck, when they are made? Meaning I could get a replacement somewhere?

04/03/2020 05:58:48

Did a little messing around in the shop tonight, learning about how the ML10 lathe works, as I am a complete newb with this. Learning a ton quite quickly though!

I went through the misc parts which came with the unit. Unfortunately, it seems as though the 4 jaw chuck, which was included with the lathe, is missing its backing plate. Is the chuck still usable (ie, would I be able to source a backing plate for it)?

Thread: Dog clutch for Myford ML10
03/03/2020 22:19:00
Posted by bobcha on 03/03/2020 20:23:41:

A guide to the components that I made when I fitted a dog clutch to my ML10 . The inner diameter of the body and stop collar is obviously bored to fit the leadscrew. The lengths I will measure and post tomorrow if I have the time. Hope that helps.

Charlie.

That would be great. That and any pictyres would be a big help.

03/03/2020 17:39:35

I finally got my ml10 lathe up and running. I was wondering is anyone has plans or dimensions for building a dog clutch for this unit?

Thread: Tooling and Feedscrew Clutch
20/02/2020 03:58:41

Which tools should i purchase, If I am just getting started using my first lathe? I have a myford ml10, and it came with a very basic cutter. I don’t even know where to start. I have a few items left to gather before I begin my” journey”. One of those items is the actual tooling used for the lathe.

Also I keep hearing about a feedscrew clutch which is optional for the ml10. What exactly does this accessory accomplish?

About 20 years ago l made a 3-way toolpost for my ML10.

l think the design was by Dave Lammas, and it had once been published in ME.

l didn't use the casting, but fabricated mine from 1/4" steel plate, all screwed together with counter-sunk socket screws.

Armed with 3 indexable-insert tools, l never looked back, and no "barked" knuckles as was common with the 4-way type.

Quite the best, simple accessory, l ever made for my lathe.

Any chance you could draw up a quick sketch?

Hey everyone, thought i would revive this! Just finished building the table for my ml10. Getting excited.

Do you have a few photos of your simple toolholders which you could post?

Jeremy, let us know where in the world you are. (County/nearest big town) There may be someone locally willing to help get you started.

I am located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It would be great if there was a member cclose to me which could show me the ins and outs of this unit.
