Don't forget, ebay do 'sell for a pound' or 'no seller fees' offers every two or three weeks. I use these offers to sell and it's saved me many hundreds of pounds over the last couple of years. You do need to click on the link on either the front page or in the email they send you and list the item on the dates specified, but they're the only conditions.

Yes, you are right, sorry, trying to do it from memory!

If your lathe is metric the screw gear is 50T. If it is imperial it's 40T. I'm guessing your lathe is imperial and you probably have both 40T and the 50T. The 50T can be swapped with the 20T idler to get the full range of standard threads.

Pre Charged Pneumatic (PCP) airguns are 'hurt your ears and do permanent damage' loud without a moderator. It's thevery reason I started learning to use a lathe.

That don't sound right, there's no need to use a stop.

If you are not using a TDI and not using the machines reverse to get back to the start you have no chance of decent threads.

Sound more likely user error than duff machinery.

If you are just making the odd part for air rifles, a three phase supply is not really practicle.

I initially ran my 3 phase Boxford via a rotary converter, which meant there was no need to alter the wiring on the lathe at all and if the need arose, I could run other three phase machines from the same converter.

I still have the converter but went over to using an inverter. A cheap inverter plus a control box can convert the lathe to single phase for about £60, if you are competent enough to do it yourself.

My lathe now uses the original switchgear, plus a pot, one additional switch and a relay circuit to give variable speed, electronic forward and reverse, slow speed jog and braking. All the interlocks can be wired in simply enough to maintain the safety features.

DMB, he will either block you, ignore you or arrange a meeting with you. Then what??

I sold that Boxford a couple of months back. He has copied my ad and photographs vebatim, so definately a scam, again.

The more of us report him, the better.

John, there is no, "neck of the woods" He won't be based there, he could be based anywhere, abroad even.

Lathe looks to me (from memory) to be the same as a Warco 918 or Chester 920, presumably sold in other guises as well. Better chance someone will have a manual for one of those.

Looks like enough people have reported him. eBay have removed his listings. Keep your eye out, he'll be back soon with a new Monica..

Yes, definate scam. All the usual with plagerised ads from genuine sellers. See his other items also.

Carefull. ALL ebay ads default to 'returns not accepted'. His are auctions with low start prices, so not selling cheap. They are seven day listings. He is not suggesting any form of unreturnable payment. He is not based out of the way and he does accept paypal. The only thing he is a new seller but that doesn't automatically mean it's a scam. If paying by paypal you are protected. Paypal won't immediatly release funds to new users, they hold on to the money a couple of weeks just to make sure. Buy from him and either collect or pay with paypal and you should be ok.

Simply ringing the numbert he' has given you in the ad won't tell you much unless you expect scammers to cave in as soon as you ask if an item is legit.. Calling then asking them to call you back via a land line would help. Anyone can do basic checks of a land line number and genuine sellers won't mind, after all this lathe is being sold by a business seller so they will have a landline.

You could for also check this seller by Googling the company and contacting them via their website (not foolproof but pretty good) and as a business, you could probably pay them with a credit card, which is much the safest way to pay, where possible.

To be honest, this item doesn't raise my suspisions in the way Boxford man did.

I did not start this thread to put anyone off ebay. It is a fantastic resource if used sensibly. I've bought and sold literally thousands of times with only minor issues. I've also bought or sold perhaps 20 items in the £1k - £2k range unseen with no real problem. (Sellers being a little economical with the descriptions of condition is as bad as it gets).

I was a police officer most of my working life. Like most police officers I can be overly suspisious and cynical and I don't believe in coincidence!

A new seller selling a high value item is not in itself a reason not to buy but with all the other contra indicators; recent feedback for low value items, short duration auctions with the item in a remote location (How many people reading could get to Dunoon to view within the time constraints of a 24 hour auction?) BACS as payment, refusal to accept paypal and the biggest one, plagerised description and photos.

Ask the seller an awkward question or for a photo of an obscure part, something he won't be able to get from the net, say, the underside of the tail stock. A genuine seller won't mind. I've run down the garden to my workshop in the middle of the night with a camera and tape measure in order to answer questions before now.

All that being said, I've had some real bargains from new sellers, just be carefull, go with your head not your heart. If it lookslike a duck, waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck.

How are you contacting ebay? I can only highlight the item to them and pick from a drop down menu that I suspect the item is fruadulent. If I could point out to them why I thought it was fraudulent I think I would be more successful. I've definately done this in the past but can't remember how I did it. Thanks.

The exact same mill that was sold in Huntingdon on 22nd October, using the same photographs and description.

Also selling a diesel generator that was sold in Dartford on 16th October, same photos, same description.

Another vote for Spindle Services here.

I had a bent spindle on my Boxford X10. (See the thread I started some months back) I aggravated the issue by trying to grind the face of the spindle true (not admitted in the thread I started, too embarrassed!)

I nearly broke the lathe for spares before finding Spindle Services on the net. I called them, Simon the MD called me back, I explained the issue and he said what he could do and gave me an estimate over the phone. I sent them the spindle and they were true to their word and stuck to the estimate. The spindle was returned to me within about two weeks as good as, if not better than new.

They can straighten, replace missing metal and regrind to original specs. They are freindly, reasonably priced and easy to deal with.

Steve, all these scammers offer viewing and collection, only thet happen to be based up in Scotland. That one single thing seems to be enough to satisfy many people, with respect, yourself included.

A couple of weeks ago there was a thread here about a scammer purporting to have a Warco GH610 for sale on ebay.

There is now a Boxford 11;30 for sale on ebay.

The seller joined ebay yesterday, has a 10 feedback rating from bulk sellers, is based up in Scotland, the auction is very short duration, he offers delivery but wants BACS payment and is using photos from an older genuine completed advert.

All the normal red flags indicating the seller is a scammer. Sooner or later he'll get lucky and someone will pay by bank transfer, fearfull of missing a bargain.

I've reported the seller to ebay. Don't get caught out before they take his add down!

There is also a 'help and contact' tag at the top of the ebay home page. Click this and search a key word, such as 'fraud'. Scroll down and click and /or fill in the relevent details. You used to be able to write longhand exactly what your suspisions were, but unless I'm doing something wrong, you can't do this anymore.
