Hi all

i have purchased warco’s smallest mill WD12 does anyone have same and fitted DRO , as being an old man my eyes are not as good as they used to be , I have to have a good long look at the increments and I think a DRO would make it a lot easier to use , I only repair clocks so I think the mill will complement my watchmakers lathe.

I have never used a mill before so I have a big learning curve, I was originally looking at a bushing machine but when you consider they are between £1200 and £1800 I went for a mill because I can not only use it to replace bushes but lots of other jobs as well for a total cost of just less than £1000.

Hi all hope everyone staying safe and well

i have it all cleaned and painted in 2K ready for rebuilding, but I am unsure what oil to use, with my IME the consensus was to use H32 transmission oil, has anyone any suggestions?

the lathe is a Derbyshire Magnus 10mm , I found the stamp when I stripped it to get rid of the crap paint job and repaint it .

If anyone has any 10mm Derbyshire Magnus collets surplus to requirements they wish to sell please PM me as there are a few missing.

there we’re three different collets that came with the lathe and I have tried them for running true and they all run true as far as I can see with my dial gauge ( well very close 0.0025”  , also picture of knurled ring as requested it measures 45mm o/d 25mm I/d plus some better pictures of possible cross slide.

Hi Nigel thanks for reply I will have a look on site you suggested I have ordered a quick change tool holder set as I can’t be doing with setting tool every tool change, plus I need to find out what fitting for leaver operated tailstock for Jacob chuck.

hi all

i have been looking for a cross slide for my IME watchmakers lathe but it seems they are as rare as rocking horse poo, so I have purchased another watchmakers lathe including cross slide and other parts, some I know what they are for and some I don’t.

so If the knowledgeable people on here could help it would be much appreciated,

firstly I can’t find a makers name on it although most of the collets measure very close to Derbyshire and the very top of the bed measures 1 and 15/32” or 36.5mm.

second the two black and brass poles have two pulley wheels on top of one of them I haven’t a clue what they are for .

also the thing that looks a bit like a top slide but not sure what that is .

land last but not least various other handles and things plus a round knurled ring with two grub screws.

I just purchased this ( see picture) it was advertised as a watchmakers drill press but i think it is to big for anything watch related, although I wanted it for clock related use and I think it will be perfect for that , I have never seen the like before, maker JHM, anyone seen one or know anything about it ?.

it is in very good condition, no play, very smooth, the only thing is it needs a new belt but the seller told me that when I purchased it. ( it was very cheap) and I think I have a very good deal.

Edit forgot to say the chuck is old but very good quality Jacob chuck 0 to 1/4” or 0 to 6.35mm in old money.

I have just received some 5BA cheese head steel screws for a french clock, from EKP Supplies £3.50 for 25 they have steel and brass different heads and lengths.

Thanks for replies the set will only be for cleaning threads in mainly brass clock parts and the occasional replacement screw making , I know the risk in buying second hand but unless you pay big money nowadays or new they are mostly rubbish so I thought for sixty pounds it was worth the risk, It is a full original set in wood box, I also looked at another set but it had bits missing and it didn’t look in as good condition but it was LaL, only time will tell, but I have been in vintage/ classic vehicle restoration for 50 years but had never heard of Macrome before.

has anyone got any information on Macrome tools, all I can find out is that they were in business around the second ww in possibly Wolverhampton and or Alcester and there is a road in Wolverhampton with same name not sure if road named after company or vice versa, the reason for asking is I have just purchased a BA tap & die set and I am wondering about the quality although vintage tools mostly seem to be good quality and a lot of this sort of thing used to be made for the armed forces

Hi all
I am wondering if anyone has a multifix M80 motor that could measure the shaft for pulley size and if woodruff key or grub screw as I have purchased one from Germany and I would like to have the pulley here when it arrives .

Hi all hope everyone staying safe and well

although I am a key worker I am only working two day’s a week so as I have plenty of time I have just started to make some clock parts and screws with my Cowells 90 ME but I am finding that I am not getting a very good finish with brass although I get a better finish on mild steel, I am using HHS tooling and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what could be wrong, I have tried different speeds, would carbide be any better.

any help would be appreciated Dell

being new to using a lathe especially one this small it is and will be a steep learning curve, I knew I would have to cut a bit then extend the bit cut then extend again , also I have been looking to see if I could find a different sort of tool so if you have a picture or link that would be great .

i haven’t started yet as I want to make everything clear in my thick head before I get going.

The overhang was just to set the height to centre and yes I can use a 1/4” HSS parting tool but some of the things I intend to make are 45mm diameter in brass so an HSS parting tool is not going to cut it ( pun intended ), if I make a wedge to set the tool on a rake would that not work ?.

If I shim just the front only the leading edge will it be stable enough as I have put it in without shims and held it at an angle and it lines up.

I cannot run it backwards as the chuck on a Cowells 90ME is threaded so it would unscrew, and I have sent a email to Cowells.
