Thread: The perennial question...
23/05/2022 06:50:14

Hobbymat MD65 might be a possibility - will swing 80mm 3-jaw (or a somewhat larger slim-bodied 4J), screwcutting / finefeed, accurate, just about portable for a man in good health.

Standard Morse tapers in head and tailstock, reasonable availability of spares..

..and often overlooked - your budget should get one in 'ready to work' condition.

Thanks very much for that; it all kind of looks to be what (and where) you'd expect, hope you get a satisfactory run out of it soon..

18/05/2022 21:25:01

I was quite interested to see that there seems to be quite a lot of 'spare room' in the cases - 'specially given the amount of air that needs to get moving in the long inlet..

..this is a 'normal' three-port?

..it'd be interesting to hear the conclusions whatever the outcome is.. ..do you know if anyone else has one (to this design) running?

Thread: Myford ML4 change gear modification
16/05/2022 07:28:58

The pins work okay, I've never heard of one shearing in normal use.

You'll have to drill the keyed ones anyway, in order to be able to compound them with the pinned ones.

If you use keys in the drive, there is a danger that the small spindle drive pinion / fixing becomes the weakest link in the train..?

Well, I don't think anyone reading the thread this morning will be thinking that it's the OP's posting that is of little credit to him, will they..?

Anyhoo - how bad is the wear?; I ask because although the screw helix in mine is visibly 'thin', after careful adjustment of freeplay at the handle end, the backlash comes down to about an eigth of a turn, which is pretty respectable for an old assembly and certainly useable for turning and facing, even if parting off could be a bit exciting..

If you can give us a bit more detail, post a pic or two it might be useful - I'll try and post a picture and some measurements for comparison later this morning..

..pretty sure that the feedscrew is Acme form, mine is 5/16 x 12tpi.

There might be a couple of unworn turns right next to the handle end where you'll be able to see the original profile.

I suspect the chances of anyone having a new one are very slim indeed.

Thread: Re-boring Grind Wheels
13/05/2022 07:40:13

The flanged washers should be the items that control the alignment of the wheel and hold it in truth usually after a bit of trial and error when mounting..

..making new flanged washers has been a long-proven solution to many cheap bench-grinder / wheel ills, the standard ones are usually stampings of doubtful accuracy..

There are probably earlier threads IIRC...

Thread: Milling Table Flatness - What is acceptable
12/05/2022 06:51:34

Peter, you are measuring across the full width of the table, including the dovetails - the bit you need to measure is from table top to the flat ways 'underneath-of-the-table-top', the flat surfaces that support the table on the shears above the dovetails... ..the dovetail bit doesn't matter..

Thread: Drummond m
07/05/2022 20:42:20

Hi Lee,

Welcome to the forum - If you can post a picture of the lathe and the broken bit it'll be easier for people to see what needs replacement or even whether you might be able to carry out a repair.

This thread explains how to make an album & post pictures;

How to post pictures / photographs...

..there's a machine tool archive here with a section on Drummonds that might help you identify which exact model you have;

.. ..Surprised they are 1MOD as my smaller 280 used 1.5MOD

Yes, I was surprised but the 120 is 122mm OD and the 127 is 129mm - I wouldn't be surprised if the 1322 uses bigger.

IF it's of any use whatsoever, the current GH600 comes with a 120/127 pair, 1 mod., each slab10mm thick, width of pair 25mm; they are mounted on a 20mm sleeve with 6mm key and the sleeve bore is 14mm. The sleeve appears to be press fitted.

If these would fit the stud (and Warco could supply them) it would only leave you a pair of 42's to find.

Unfortunately the other supplied GH600 gears are 32, 64, and 40.

Thread: Toolco - Selling up

No apology necessary, Michael; I embarrass myself; seem to be having a small run on redundant posts.. I wonder whether anyone there is even still picking up email, if the announcement is two years old..

Stumbled across this, & thought I'd pass it on - notice of final clearance of spares, accessories, and remaining 'stuff' at Toolco this morning (were these 'Weiss' machines?)

Spare boards, gear sets, motors, accessories, other stuff to follow..

Message & current listing here..

Toolco

I wish the proprietor a long and happy retirement..

Can anyone provide a link to documentation illustrating how concentricity diminishes with lower values of tightening torque, please?

Thread: Supplier of 7/32" Dowel Pins Please?
22/04/2022 20:42:02

Rotagrip might be worth a call - I know he carries knurls, I've seen 5/8 x 3/16 listed in his Ebay store which I think are 'when he has them, he has them', I think 5/8 x1/4 is a standard industry 'stock' size, as is (I think) 1/2 x 3/16 is; mine are this size.

I've always had found it easier to obtain a passable result with 3/16 wide wheels in my small lathe.

As others have said, I've used (and still have fitted) silver steel pins - nominal dia., cut to length and hardened as is.
