Thread: How close have you got to a Darwin Award?
13/02/2023 15:48:30

Many years ago, someone gave me a 177 air rifle.. excitedly I took it into the back yard and standing in front of some steel dustbins, I started taking pot shots at anything that offered itself as a target.. bored I looked for a more defined target that would verify my sharpshooter skills... I found a sofa cushion (just the innards sponge part) which seemed ideal.

I hurriedly marked out a target circle configuration on the sponge.. propped it up about 10 yards away and lined up on the bullseye.. squeezed the trigger and .. ping (a metallic sound heard behind me!). of course I ignored it and lined up again.. and the same ping! Someone was shooting at me! I looked around.. but couldnt see anyone.. Lined up on the target again and a good hard ping again off the metal dustbins.

Thinking about it.. my idiotic mind realized what was going on.. the pellets I was firing were coming right back at me off the cushion! I was lucky not to get hit in the face or worse in the eyes!

Looking at the cushion,, not a hint of where the pellets has hit.. no penetration marks at all. looking at the dustbins.. small but visible dents!

Yes Nicholas, that’s the one.. is that an old catalog you were looking at?

31/12/2022 19:57:33

Anyone out there got one of these that they can share details of? This was the small sheet bender with exchangeable bedding bars. It has long been discontinued by Warco and they don’t have any of the original drawings for it.

Thread: Locomotive threading
05/05/2022 17:20:51

Hi All,

I am in Canada. I have a question regarding threading for 3.5 and 5" british locos. The threads on my builds all call out for ME or BA threads mostly. fasteners in these threads (and taps/dies too) have to come from UK. Any concerns or suggestions for alternatives that may be more readily supported in my neck of the woods?

Thread: Magnetic DRO-S7

I have one of these kits lying around waiting to be installed. I have seen the buried tape in the crosslide before but have not seen the buried head in the saddle before.. is there a video or pictures or guide for doing that? Neil, if you could document your installation, that may be helpful for others like me!

thanks!

Thread: Best LNER A4 documentation
07/09/2021 16:58:12

Thanks Andrew and Greensands.. I am planning a trip to the CRM soon.. Greensands, which issues of LLAS would you suggest? Are they available online?

07/09/2021 15:09:49

Hi All,

I have been looking for documentation on LNER A4 (works drawings, books, photos, websites etc). As much as I would like to visit NRM or such places, its a bit too far for me to travel!

I have an old Clarkson A4 loco that I would like to detail.. Any help provided would be greatly appreciated..

Thread: drill chuck recommendations for a bridgeport
05/05/2021 15:37:40

A seemingly simple topic.. but perhaps worth discussion..

What type of drill chuck should I buy for a bridgeport mill? I want to get maximum utility from it.. capacity? integral R8 taper or an arbor? Keyless or? Are smaller capacity chucks more accurate for smaller drill sizes? Do I need more than 1?

I have other equipment (lathe) which uses a MT2 taper in the tailstock..

What kind of quality should I get.. any recommendations?

Thread: filling holes in bronze castings

Thank you all for the informative replies.. I will likely go the bronze rod and silver solder technique as that is what I have on hand. First try will be on the easiest to remanufacture casting!!

Hello All!

I am restarting a locomotive build - luckily the previous builder didnt get far!

One of the problems I have is that the hornblocks have been drilled but the frame were likely drilled first and then through into the the castings. The casting holes are not in great locations in the castings and look off. Likely no-one will see them but I am wondering how to fill the holes in and salvage the castings. Any ideas please on how best to proceed\? these are not the only castings I need to fix and I am in Canada so replacement castings (if available) are an expensive last resort. Fix if at all possible!!

thanks!!!

Thread: model engine world magazine
23/04/2021 15:48:41

Hi All,

I see a few obscure notes to a periodical called 'MODEL ENGINE WORLD'.

If thats the correct name for it, it must be out of print as I cannot find any images or details about the issues.. does anyone have any copies or PDF's or details of this magazine they could share?

thanks!

Thanks everyone! Lots of suggestions here.. and improvements to my technique!

Any ideas as to why the cutting slowed and required much more downforce on the milling slide vertical feed to continue cutting?

30/11/2020 19:43:46

The vice did not move, the shaft got pulled away from the thrust bearing and towards the centerline of the lathe. the cutter climbed out of the slot, jumped on top of the shaft and made some gouges on the top of it.

Thanks All for the comments and suggestions. I think improving the ridigity is a good idea. I will lock down all the unused axises (axiii?). Zan's suspicion is likely any accurate assessment.. can climb milling be avoided by reversing the spindle or ?
