Thread: Non-renewable energy

NDIY , if it were but so simple as to ignore scientific debate ,rename the devil as “CO2” and proselytise.

Thread: Electric vehicles

In large part the initiative is more political than practical.Who advises and have they not understood that green at point of consumption differs from green at the point of production? Expect not as the same system pushed us towards diesel that the man in the street knew then to be unpleasant, and now knows to have its own dangers.

Having but one government minister ( in 33 I am told ) with a science degree, perhaps "diversity" in a grown up understanding of its broader meaning should be addressed.

An earlier poster was spot on that the future will be a mixed energy economy. My city uses hydrogen fuelled buses, to a fanfare almost as loud as some of our self congratulatory posters here. The cost is 4-5 times that of diesel, and they stop 4-5 times more frequently because of interlocks and sensor warnings ( again my source tells me). They certainly pollute not the town, but require a large electrical sub station to feed the hydrogen production.

If the political green (sorry) light is to stimulate debate and encourage energy innovation I am all for it. If it is taken as confirmation by blinkered green enthusiasts that battery is the "one true way", then we are heading up a cut de sac with no charging point at its terminus.

Michael, an easy mistake to make . Even with your misreading of the product your call to

read the SDS rather than the advertising blurb is well made.

I was nearly adding to your post that the active ingredients your post highlighted were not in play in the product

referenced by the OP.

Like you I read the ingredients of the original /native formula and concluded that there was no magic dust involved.

Was that your conclusion?

17/09/2020 21:57:11

Michael G's link is for a different product. Its active chemicals confer SPF.

The native product seems like a simple moisturiser with dimethicone and glycerin being prominent. The beauty is the lack of perfumes and nasty preservatives.

Dr Wayne Weber MD appears to be a 78 year old gynaecologist and I see no claim that he is a "Board Certified Dermatologist" other than in the advert. It my limited research is true, makes his endorsement less than weighty you might think.

If it works use it. I would.

Thread: Taking a pair of wire cutters to a standard baseball cap
03/08/2020 20:48:07

Interesting libertarian information Jeff. It may explain the observed effect of wearing reducing the IQ of the wearer by 5%. However it does not explain the observation that wearing a baseball cap backwards induces a 10% reduction in IQ.

Bandersnatch you can have your vision corrected within reason to anything you wish, though the astigmatism remains . You will have a fixed focal length (generally on NHS), so if you corrected perfectly for near vision you would require distance correction and vice versa. In effect you have approached this with the ageing eye as the poor old lens becomes less plastic as it develops a cataract.

Not everyone adapts to the one eye long one short approach and as noted stereoscopic vision can be impaired(though the brain uses other cues).

Speak to your surgeon /optician .

Were you driving using a child's seat which the sensors detected???

Or, if Martin's rear force over riding the frontal impact instruction, is incorrect, then could the pivoting force be a "no

deploy" command?

Michael, thank you for this posting. I can confirm that I have now cancelled my Lambo order....

He who pays the piper calls the tune......so why are we surprised that advertisers are disgruntled.?

Assuming that discussion is permitted and common sense vetting applied by the moderators, and I do not doubt it, who can object?

Thread: Sign Language, Cochlear Implants, Hearing Aids

Richard I would encourage C. I.s and offer this anecdote. I was involved with training a 12 year old boy at our kayaking club. His single device was relatively new and he was clearly slightly smothered by a naturally concerned mum. His confidence blossomed as he was able to participate in this adventurous sport and pick up much of the nuancing of leg pulling and joshing which makes up the social fabric of such endeavours . His mother's delight at this surfacing from isolation and delight in his normalisation was a pleasure for other club members to enjoy. Although being banned from jumping off the pool diving board, he joined others who tested this rule. On the point of jumping o his mother shouted down the pool to get off the diving board. He looked up having heard her , tapped his device implying non hearing and with a shrug of the shoulders dived in. This mischievousness was all the more comically normal when considering that the device has an LED showing its function and it was decidedly green.

If it were my lad and I was advised that the CI was available I would pursue it. I am aware that there is a sensory politics movement and offer no comments other than my anecdote.

Welcome Alan.

I have just completed a riser with reference to Gary's drawings (thanks Gary). They were available on here so do a search. There is also a Y Tube video which is interesting. I purchased a block of aluminium for £38 for the short size, and the process is fairly painless.

A bonus is that my apple watch told me that with all the winding back and forth of the table I had undertaken 2000% of my daily exercise target!!

Thread: Odd size die
01/05/2020 14:03:33

Looking at the original picture I can convince myself that the "4" is followed by a poorly stamped fraction.

Certainly there appears an"R " in the lower left which must strike a chord with some of the experts on here.

Thread: Cutting down a linear glass DRO encoder
29/04/2020 11:44:23

Robin, IIRC my glass was held in with 1/2inch long 1/16th rubber strips which came out with a small pick.Take a picture before removing as I think there was an offset against the reading head. The ends had a dab of glue holding them in the end caps.Of course the wiper seals pull out permitting better access.

I would not be confident of the glass remaining intact if the glass were to be cut in situ. I have seen it done on YT but....

27/04/2020 10:09:33

I held the glass flat against an MDF board . Using a very thin sheet of foam such as used under wood effect flooring as a backing to ensure no grit stress risers, the supported glass was then easily cut with a Dremel and a diamond coated cutting disc.

Thread: Lawn weed and feed. How much is 35g?
21/04/2020 15:32:51

I would have thought that you take the stated weight of the packet you have and work out how many 35gs are contained therein. Or read how many sq metres your package covers and estimate from there. You would be close enough for government wok ,as the saying goes.

Thread: Bottled Gas Suppliers

My experience of leaving the BOC fold is similar. In their defence, they did half the tariff on request some years ago. I now use HobbyWeld and the "keep receipt" advice is sound.

As Andrew said the ADR justification is wrong as "private use of vehicle " is a clear exemption. Similarly "occasionally engage"... .less than 2 journeys /month. It is this sort of inflexible mis-application of H and S that turns people off the core message of H and S.

Thread: 2nd Hand Hearing Aid Reprogramming?
17/12/2019 18:04:14

Martin NICE has nothing to do with this. Perhaps Quality Care Commission has a position...but I suspect simply commercial greed. That said A and E departments will not take back aluminium walking sticks or Zimmer frames citing "hygiene" or H and S depending your correspondent. If your son plays football you might have three of four lying about the house, at cost to the State .

You assume that a £3k device is superior to the cheaper one. It may be, but.....

I would certainly shop around and a private audiologist will strike a deal once they realise you are not going to shell out a king's ransom on a new device. They are commercial pragmatists , who will accept bread and butter today for the goodwill which will ensure cake and cream for them at your next purchase.

I bought the same product 9 months ago and agree great VFM. The one issue is the poor hold on the vise. I routinely use a G Glamp to secure the workpiece.
